So I'm thinking about running a BW tourney at my middle school in seoul. I've talked about it with a few teachers and students and they were all pretty receptive to the idea. I have a rough idea of what I want to do, but I'm posting this so that I can receive additional ideas of which I can hopefully amalgamate into one beautiful tourney.

Here's some background info:

1. The students will all be in their third grade of middle school, presumably all boys. That makes them 15 in american years.

2. The tourney will be protracted over several weeks. The 3rd grade students end their finals in the early weeks of November, which gives them a month and a half of free time in which they receive no additional lessons and it's pretty much free time every day. I will probably be holding the games during the lunch times of those free days.

3. I want to tie English-learning into this. I'm thinking of having some of the more aspiring kids broadcast the replays and uploading them on youtube. However, I know nothing of broadcasting, or "shout"casting, or whatever it's called: no idea for programs, protocol, etc etc. Or uploading. Or anything video related. Any ideas here would be especially appreciated.

4. I'm debating between having an individual league (like GSL) or a team league (like Pro league). If I were to run it as a team league, each class (of which there are 8) will assemble a team, a manager (?) and go at it proleague style. Since there's not enough time at lunch, the match will probably have to be protracted to two or three days. If I have an individual league, we can just have one match a day for 25 days or something. Which do you think would be more fun?

5. Prize: Probably a pizza party for the class that wins. Pizza is bank here so this is no joke. Still, other prize ideas are appreciated.

6. Misc. I dono if the principal will approve of it, though my head teachers do, so I'll probably have to run it hush hush. I think this favors a replay/broadcast approach over a live audience type of thing. Also, if I have kids shoutcast, I'm thinking I'll have them do the first five minutes in english, and after that they can do it in Korean since too much English will be too taxing. But I want to provide some sort of incentive for students who can prolong their english as much as possible. Any ideas?

K so basically in these early stages I'm more interested in other ideas than what I can think of. TL being as collectively intelligent as it is, I thought it'd be good to throw it out here. Thanks =D

Korea is awesome, you guys play SC interclass tournaments, here we only play goddamn football...

PL mode is very exciting if there is rivalry among the classes, so I would go with that one.

some of these kids are probably really good. that's the sad thing about it. If I were to hold a BW tournament in the neighboring 5 colleges near me, I would win undefeated, and I'm not that good. But these kids, probably one or two have played on korean ladders for years and are probably B+ish level.

You better post reps!

For English, you can have them do interviews in English, or shoutcast (you can download Camstudio which will let u do it for free)

haha well this isn't standard procedure by any means, i just want to do it cuz I want to do something fun with the boys before they graduate to high school.

yah team league would be pretty dope, but that would mean some kids get left out... plus they'll probably defer to one another to avoid the responsibility. And logistically, since we have to stretch it out over 2 or even 3 days, it could take forever..

The thing is, they're not that good hhaa. Or at least, the kids I know aren't. Maybe there's some secret geniuses lurking about, but for the most part middle school kids don't really care about BW and have very basic, D or D- level skills.

Regardless of whether the students are as skilled as us foreigners would like to believe, I'm still impressed that your teachers would be okay with this kind of thing. I can't think of a single teacher I've known that would be cool with having students playing video games.

In any case, I second the vote for replays.

EDIT:

Wait, after rereading your post, I'm not sure if you're a student or a teacher... which is it?

teacher.

got class, brb in 45

edit: actually they're not 16, they're 16 in korean years so they're 15 in american years. let me edit that

edit 2: yeah, the teachers are pretty chill and they say i've been favoring the girls too much (which is true, they're cuter and more enthusiastic) so I should show some love for the boys. And this was my idea, and they seem to be ok with it.

Maps? What maps should i go with? maybe i can stick some 2v2's in as well

well if they're 16 years old i'm sure one or two of them are fairly decent. one of my practice partners who is preparing for Courage is 14 years old, and he's top 15 on BrainClan ladder.

afterall, it is korea we're talking about!

Yeah, if there's enough interest, PL style would probably be better. Still, it might be worth it to make the teams always play out the full 5 games even if one team gets three wins before the ace match. Two reasons.

1: It ensures everyone gets a chance to play.

2: If you want to do a championship at some point, playing out all 5 games will give you more information from which to derive ranks for the teams.

maybe like C/B rank in iccup? maybe

you're 15 year old korean ? your english is pretty good

i think he's the teacher.

this sounds like a good idea. have them prep some interview Qs in english. on the spot english commentary (esp if they dont know the terms) is difficult. you'll end up with a lot of "wow" and "very good very good".

you could have a match where they must ask questions in each other and answer them while playing. it'll be a slight distraction but not too much. or have like 5 on 5 playing the same 1v1. cant answer a Q = he's out, switch to 2nd player.

player A "whens your birthday?"
player B "october 13th" "what color do you like?"
player A "uhhh uhhh"
-OUT- -SWITCH-
player C "black" "where are you from?"
player B "I'm from Seoul"

etc etc

4v4 is a battle of who has the better computer.

I would say first, have students tell you first how they rate themself as a broodwar player, preferably in iccup form. From there, you can help construct the proper teams and balance them as well as possible on your own.
From there, you can organize a sort of team league tournament. Combined with fps' idea, it could be very fun.

PL style would be sick. It would bring the class closer together imo and teach them about supporting the team and eachother. It would also be more fun probably, but the kids have a chance to win even if they aren't the strongest one in the class in particular. The time framing and spreading out the play dates seems like it would be a pain though.

haha i think they already know those words. Those conglish words are easy, the tough part will be connecting the conglish words with english. Or like introducing themselves or the players.

Do you think it'd be too weird to suddenly interrupt games with english questions haha. Like i'll be obsing, and during the game i'll type a question which they have to answer or they get... DQ? penalized?

Well i want to keep them by their classes. I think the way to get around skill imbalances is to have it a best of 3, with 1 game a 1v1 and the 2nd game a 2v2. The third game can be an ace match... but since there's so few games I'm thinking they can only use each player once.

yea yeayead im sure they know those words, what i meant was to make them say EXPANSION instead of the korean 'multi' version haha. anyway hope it goes well :D take lots of photos and stuff (if u can) if it goes ahead!

This idea and thread are too good to let it rot in blogs section! You should've made it in BW or even BW Tourneys forum.

Anyways, I'm sorry I don't have any helpful tips to give and can only wish you good luck with this!
