Okay guys, I hate to just like, back-seat mod. But I seriously want this thread to workout, I'm enjoying reading the stories, and this thread doesn't need to be filled with crap nobody cares about. So if this discussion is that important to you, can you please take it to PM? I don't, and nobody else cares about how:
"If my boss wanted me to be a "professional," she could pay me like a professional."
"This is a terrible attitude to work and life in general. I hope you realize your career has been severely castrated by this attitude and that your chances of promotion or moving on to better things are slim to none. "
"No. I treat them like normal people to start out with. I'm a very polite person, and I don't even talk to them about philosophy. But if they act like shit I'm not going to kiss their ass."
"I don't agree that my job is to do my job. It's your boss's job to try to get you to do your job, and its your job to try to avoid doing your job while keeping your job."
I really don't want to see a good thread closed. Thank you, please keep the stories coming guys. (:

Thief story time: 1st I want to say that we as workers cost our shop money too by being simply stupid. Sometimes we dont get emails to change value on games because some special deal just ended. this is still OK but when We threw some things away because we tought it was trash thats really bad. 2nd thing is that We have the BEST customers ever, they are nice and everything, THEY dont steal, who steals shit is not our customer just a thief who goes by.
-There are blind spots in our shop, places where we dont see our customers every move while we are behind the desk. But we have cameras so we thought it was ok. well we were wrong. Lets call this guy Magician. When we watched the video we couldnt believe this. He opened locked glass door (purport?) with new games. He did it with one hand, (I need 2hands to open it and it takes me around 10sec to do so because the lock is fucked up) So he used one hand to take 8 games and put it into his tesco bag after 2min he came back for another 8 games. Magician with some balls
-We dont have free space for wrapped goods so when goods come in we have to unpack them on the table. It would be ok but this time we were really close to loosing 2x PsP and some games. It was a chill day so we were talking a lot and joking with customers but some youngsters saw their opportunity to get rich. took the goods and walked away. the things they took were prepared for loading onto shelves so they already had the things that make sound when you get out of the shop in them. Kids were 12 and 13 so we called their parents and asked them to pick them up. it was 20:00 so we didnt want to sent them home alone. no police.
-Every month we have to count gift cards / vouchers its simple and it takes 20minutes and there is no way this can go wrong when there are 2 of us. so while my co-worker is counting I talk to people. From time to time gypsies come here to sell knifes, food, watches or parfumes, (its probably stolen or broken and yes they sell food too chicken mostly) so I say: no thanks and this woman goes away but there are still 4 of her kids (14-16yo) so I paused stream of dota and watched them as they were running around, told them to stop and they did, and as they were leaving 2 of them took some vouchers and tried to run away, the 1st kid was caught by customer that just came in and I caught the 2nd one after 10meters of run because he couldnt open the 2nd door from the shopping place fast enought. Coworker called police. 1st I was like nah just let them go but now I think it was right decision, maybe if they take them from their parents and teach them something we can have a new John Blake.
-We have huge box full of angry birds located next to our doors, they are 5-25cm big so when parents and their lets say 4yo kids enter and just want to look I dont pay much of attention but it happens more than often that they accidently leave with one or two angry birds. Fathers are usually really ashamed and give us money for them even they dont want to buy them. ofc they dont take a reciept so every week we ask our boss if we can buy some angry birds with extra disscount.
-This guy wanted to buy ps3 / x360 and some games for everything he looked like he doesnt care about money and took everything we said is at least playable. (Selling this easy is not hard a week before xmas) so nothing was wierd until he gave signiture credit card still ok but you know its like 900e (thats what i make in 2 months) So I ask for ID, everything was OK, date, signiture, name, photo so we sold it. 2 weeks later police and bank guys came in and said that the cradit card was stolen and they need money, boss gave them video where you could see me asking for ID and stuff so we could keep our 900e ! 1st time I saw fake ID.
This is not really thief story but I think its cool. 6 months ago our cameras went off because we change PCs with programs so cameras are useless now, so my boss decided that he will use his webcam. It took him 2h to set it up and in the end it worked more like spy camera for pranks. After 1month we forget about it, until customer asked for webcam, well we sell these useless speedlink crap so we gave him our spy camera. it was shit too but little bit better, he didnt care so he took it for 20e. after 2 months boss found out that his camera is missing so we end up paying him 10e, everybody was happy :D

lawyer. daily life is boring, so some war stories.....
in a personal injury trial, the plaintiff was a 19 year old. he was a liar and stupid. little background: personal injury lawsuit; he was riding a motocross bike on a motocross track after everyone had been waved off the track; he t-boned a water truck that was watering the track; serious injuries, including rods in both femurs (actually inside the bone....), brain injury (how he could get stupider, i dont know), etc.
before trial, i went on his myspace account and downloaded all of his posts and pictures. said pictures included pictures of him kissing multiple girls despite alleging no sex drive and pictures with a giant dildo hanging out of his pants (horse costume). judge was not amused. best of all, despite claiming he couldn't return to motocross and despite claims of intense pain, found multiple pictures of him riding motocross during a time period he said he was physically unable. also, posts showed post-injury accidents that he denied under oath, including serious back injury that he lied about to his doctors. etc. etc. etc.
so, cross-examination day (when we get to ask the plaintiff questions). ask plaintiff question, plaintiff lies, i pull out exhibit, plaintiff looks like liar, haha. repeat this pattern. eventually, plaintiff gets smart and stops lying. new pattern: ask plaintiff question, plaintiff looks at me, i reach for document, plaintiff answers truthfully. i eventually ran out of impeachment evidence (pictures/posts/etc. showing that he was lying), but he didn't know that. so, asked plaintiff question, plaintiff looks at me, i reach down to grab a non-existent document, plaintiff answers truthfully. lol.
after the day of cross-examination, he went home and shut down his myspace account almost immediately (his lawyers were pissed). but before he did so, he wrote to his gf about how he had just got reamed on the stand. she was offering him sex to console him (stupid gf for a stupid bf). lol
oh, and the judge was a bastard. my boss was asking questions and trying to read the posts on myspace, but the kid writes like a degenerate. after considerable trouble by my boss, the judge interrupts him and says "why dont you have your young associate read them instead" like i could read what this retarded kid was writing.....ageist.....
we won the trial. court found that kid was a liar and our client did nothing wrong. was a hilarious case.
look at this moron:

During the summer I work in a shop that makes high-end croquet equipment and accessories (croquetstore.com, we're a big deal in the tournament croquet world lol) The work itself is boring and repetitive, but I really like the environment in the shop. Everyone is super chill and we get paid slightly above minimum wage. Since my boss handles a lot of the phone orders and paperwork, us employees are usually left to our own devices.
One of the other guys that works there is a lot older than us (we're students, he's like 30 something), and we like to fuck with him because he's a big goof. We have these huge bags of packing peanuts because we do a lot of shipping, so one day we filled this dudes locker with them.

That's the only one I can think of at the moment, most of our work jokes aren't funny unless you were actually there haha

So much so its kinda sickening.

Not my personal work, but an encounter I had with someone who was working that left me speechless.
I'm a huge baseball fan. HUGE baseball fan. Of a small market team. So of course, I hate the Yankees who poach our players. I had a white T-shirt made up years ago that simply said in black lettering "I hate the Yankees." Simple, right? Maybe not.
Two years ago, it was playoff season and Yankees were playing the Twins. I wore this shirt to class and got the usual agreement and/or high fives from strangers on the street. I had to send a package at the post office that day, so I went a few blocks down to drop it off. I went and greeted the lady behind the counter working. After explaining what I needed, she looked at me for a few seconds, clearly looking at the shirt. She then looks up at me and says "They should make shirts like that, but say 'I hate Muslims' instead."
I didn't know what to say. My jaw dropped and I just looked over at her co-worker who seemed completely unphased by it, but was clearly aware of how racist that was. I just looked back and forth between these two ladies, before the second lady just shrugged as if to say "what am I supposed to do about it" and went in back. I didn't say another word to the lady and left.
Who says shit like that?

I work in an exploitative job for a large corporation with no hope of advancement or even a raise.
edit: I still work there only because I'm the most competent employee they've ever had, and they're happy to have me so I can make my own hours. Other people's situations are of course different, and the arrangement works out for my current needs in life.

of course not. "work ethic" is a bourgeois notion. What an absurd idea. How can one even put those two words together? Work is not ethics.

IMHO Work Ethic is a term regarding how to behave at a work envyroment, being loyal, friendly, usefull, efficient, clean and always do a bit more than what is asked of you.
We are not robots, we dont need someone doing constant input of orders to know what to do, I know sometimes going the extra mile isnt worth it or even advisable, but in the great majority of cases, its what gonna make people appreciate you, and give you good references even if you quit the job later on.

Entitlement is a serious problem in the mind's of many people in the workforce today. I totally understand that the job you may be working is not your career and you have no chance or desire to move up on your employment ladder.
However, I've always tried to learn as much as I can no matter what job I am working(I have worked as a loader in a warehouse[both dry Grocery and Deli/Frozen] and just about every type of job in a grocery store) to learn as much as I can.
I joined the grocery store business just to make some money and use some of my spare time; I found that I did not like my job that much and dreaded it. After a while something just clicked in my head and my whole mindset changed; I decided to do the best job that I could and learn as much absolutely possible. Eventually I would be promoted several times and I kept that mindset, I'm near the top of my store now and for a while I had decided I loved the business so much it was going to be my career. Recently that has changed because I simply want to do other things with my life.
Yet I find that before I leave my store that I will do as much as I can to ensure a smooth transition from my departure; I've always been put in charge of training many new employees(mainly box boys and clerks) so I definitely try to instill that knowledge and mindset into them as well.
A few personal anecdotes of mine: there are many customers who like their groceries bagged in the most absurd ways and are quite rude about it. One particular gentleman is very intimidating and outspoken; every time he came up to the register the box boys would scatter in fear. I always stepped up to the plate(sure I screwed up, but I eventually mastered the technique that he preferred) and now years later we get along great. Diffusing situations with rude customers is very easy, it's called taking the high road and venting to someone else later, not treating someone with disrespect because they abused you.
There's no dishonor in working hard at whatever it is you're doing, whether it's bagging groceries, scrubbing crap off a toilet, or building a rocket to go to the moon. In my opinion anyway...

my boss and coworkers like me and I'm a good employee...
I'm just being honest about the nature of our relationship. And the original point was that you shouldn't take crap from customers.
edit: and I really don't believe in the work ethic.

This could be a good thing, depending on your notion of "faith." What do you mean?
edit: the point is, I don't need this job - I'm doing it for more complicated reasons. But other people *do* need jobs like this, and I find the way that they are treated by the economic system to be abhorrent. And part of it has to do with instilling in them this notion that they owe some moral debt to their employers. bs.

Why is this moved to blogs? My intention here is to have a thread where people who work could share and have a laugh at stuff about work...
