While I am not a IdrA fan, I would certainly not consider him a "
newbie". The fact still remains that he is the most solid foreign progamer currently on the scene, which makes him superior to a lot of the other foreign progamers (hence why he has won the majority of events).
However, his greatest asset (his solid standard play) is also his biggest detriment, which prevents him from doing well in Korean leagues or against creative players such as F91. Unless he adapts to playing less standard, I think he will continue to face problems.
This is a quote from an interview with IdrA:
Q: Leading up to the finals, how much did you practice? Did any of your teammates at CJ know about it and help you to prepare?
A: I've found that practicing for matches against foreigners actually makes me do worse, I practiced for wcg usa and f91 and had builds and timings and whatnot prepared, and that just messed me up because they dont work vs the foreigners, who play far differently than the Koreans. Whereas I went into ESWC cold and was able to just play freely and rely on my mechanics and intuition. So I didn't practice at all for it, but that's not a slight to the tournament or to Yayba, it's just easier to play vs a non-standard opponent if you don't go in with a set game plan.
I'd give IdrA amazing odds against any player outside of Korea in a Bo5 at this point in time. I think I finally see why Artosis talks so highly of him all the time now.
