If I had to make a comparison (I'll use basketball since that's the sport I'm most familiar with) I would say that Korea is the NBA and the "foreign" scene is like European basketball. Sure the comparison isn't 100% accurate because there are Euros in the NBA that are some of the best players... but you get the gist of it. The NBA is just vastly far above the Euro leagues in terms of everything, size, skill, athleticism... that European teams simply can't compete. (Note: I'm not talking about national teams because that's really a totally different comparison).
The point though is that, whether you're a superstar in the NBA or a superstar in Europe... you are still a superstar, you're still playing the game at an incredibly high level, and you're still making tons of money. So who cares whether you want to reserve the title "bonjwa" for just Koreans... IdrA is doing exactly what a Korean bonjwa would do but in the foreign scene. No way... People who play in their spare time will always be considered little league. That's like being amazed an NHL player could go to some hockey club of people with full time jobs and school them. I'm not fully aware, but if European Basketball players play basketball full time, there's no comparison. The fact is most of the people Idra is beating are playing for fun, not for a job. Only TossGirl and PJ stood out.
First of all, I was talking about skill levels, it's not about the fact that both NBA and European players are professional and play for a living... obviously any comparison with a real sport is going to fall on its face in this respect because nobody outside of Korea plays BW "for a living". But also I think this shows your relative ignorance of the foreign scene. Just because top foreign players aren't making a living playing this game doesn't mean they are just playing in their spare time. You make it seem like these guys just show up at tournaments and happen to be good at the game. Do you have any idea how much the top players practice? People like Strelok and White-Ra are playing like 1k games per season on ICCUP, I'm sure Ret puts in many many hours per day of gaming... most of the people at the top aside from the lazy old guys like Mondragon (actually, most of ToT) are playing A LOT of Starcraft. Also, most of the players of ESC, mTw, RoX (not 100% sure of this), EG, and my own team are contracted and technically play this game professionally.
So just because you only see IdrA as a "pro gamer" and don't really know much else about the foreign scene other than the tournaments that make their way over to the TL forums doesn't mean that the foreign players are just random guys who hop on this game now and again to play tournaments. There is serious practice and effort that goes into it for the most part, so calling it "little league" is a gross exaggeration.

idra is not the best non-korean. there are at least 3 chinese (viz fnatic players) who could take indra in a bo 5 90% of the time Best White Terran maybe... but he is not the undisputed foreign master.
|
Isn't SC seperated into three groups? Korean, Chinese, and the rest (foreign)? If so, stating there are Chinese that could beat him isn't relevant to him being a foreign bonjwa.

strelok, ret, white ra wins / losses / statistics whatever, but these guys have flair, entertaining games, instead of identical solid, no-risk strats every time
|
LOL white boys can jump ![](/mirror/smilies/puh2.gif)
and vex i thought a bonjwa was just someone that is dominant regardless of how much flair or risk they input into their play

Idra has gotten good, but the difference between him and Flash or Fantasy is incredibly vast. I don't think you understand the meaning of the qualifier foreign in foreign bonjwa. Might as well call someone the D+ Bonjwa
I think by very definition someone who dominates D+ players could not be a bonjwa since he would no longer be D+...
Foreigner is a title we bestow to anyone who did not learn to play broodwar in Korea, it's quite a bit different.

while hes good and maybe the best right now, He isnt at the level of Grrr or other foreigners when they moved to Korea.. so why crown him now? Grrr should be known as the foreign bonjwa.
Grrr was actually competing with the TOP korean players when he was in Korea. Equivilant is like if Idra was in GOM or OSLs top 8-16 rounds. Thats how good Grrr was.
We could call him "the foreign wizard" though... (harry potter ref?)

I think its stupid to call foreigners bonjwa. Bonjwa is the top, only one at the time. When will it end if you star calling Idra bonjwa, what will be next ? African bonjwa ? Antarctica bonjwa ? Bonjwa of my end-of-the-world village of population 300 ?

Lol everytime I see this blog title in the corner of my eye I read: Foreign Blowjob ...
Braindamage..

IdrA is a good player, but I think calling him a "foreign bonjwa" is a bit much. For one thing, although he has been dominant lately, I do not think he has been dominant for long enough to qualify as a bonjwa. And for another, his losses to F91 and PJ have shown that he is currently not able to deal with the top Chinese players (and yes, Chinese are foreigners too; foreign=non-Korean).
I agree with Skyze that Grrrr... is the closest thing to a bonjwa the foreign community has ever had, particularly since he is the only foreigner to hold a StarLeague title.

To qualify him as "Foreign Bonjwa". He will have to either win or finish second at wcg or go to China and slaughter the Chinese scene like Testie did at pgl.
Until then he is still a trash talking newbie that got lucky to play for a korean team.
