All of Warcraft is butchered. Warcraft has its own story, Warcraft 2 has its own story, and Warcraft 3 + WoW have its own story. They sort of follow each other, but every time Blizzard makes a sequel they arbitrarily ignore certain parts of the story or pretend like certain other parts did exist for their own purposes. Just one of the reasons I hated WC3 and WoW, WC2 was so awesome.

Beyond the dark portal is even more weird because in the orc campain you recapture Alexstraza the dragon queen although the artifact that imprisoned her, the Demon soul, was destroyed when she was rescued the first time and the red dragons were only to loyal to orcs because they had their queen. But on the other hand Nez'zhul had to find the Book of Mediev to open up all those gates in Draenor.

The Common theme is that stuff that happens in old games that is contradicted later was "just a dream", a "what if" scenario, or just "overridden by sequel".

That was changed later on. Much of the WC1 and WC2 plots got changed by WC3 or WoW. Guldan got mauled to death by demons after he opened the tomb and went in. In WC1, most of the Orc Campaign, and its ending is canon. Only parts of the human campaign were. In WC2, just about all of the Human Campaign is cannon. Alot of the Orc Campaign is too, except towards the end. The Orcs did go into Quelthalas or w/e, they did attack Lordaeron itself, its just eventually, when Guldan betrays the Horde, the Alliance starts a counter attack and ends up winning.
