Introduction:
Hi, this is my first blog ever and being intoxicated as I am I've decided to write about alcohol.
Not some fancy stuff like "red or white wine goes better with dish this or that", just how to drink alcohol with your friends (options for solo drinking not included) or a bunch of random people, how to start drinking and general tips on doing so.

Disclaimer:
I am no expert! I have only like 11 years of experience with drinking alcohol. I've never even tried to be nice while doing so (ie my goal was to get wasted most of the time etc.), I've never drunk with my family (that means getting wasted along with your parents and stuff like that) etc. (at least not intentionally)
I don't know much about wine as I hate it.

The basics:

Rule #1 when drinking alcohol: DO NOT MIX (and if you do, do it wisely)
Explanation: Try not to mix different kinds of alcohol, if you're drinking beer - stick with it, if you're into wine - stick with it or things that are relative to wine and so on.
Mixing wisely: If you are going to mix alcohol remember this one thing: light -> heavy (which means if you're drinking beer you can proceed to dring vodka but not the other way around).

Why? If you make a transition from lighter stuff (less % of alc in beverage) to more heavy one, your stomach will handle it better and side effects of drinking won't be so harsh (which is true for 99% people).
If you go the other way around or (god forbid) mix the stuff completely (ex: beer, vodka, wine, beer, champagne) you can expect serious stomach issues (vomiting, stomachaches), getting drunk way earlier than you wanted to, killer hangover.

Rule #2 when drinking alcohol: Bubbles are the silent killer!
Sparkling (with bubbles) alcohol gets easier into your bloodstream thus having its effects faster/easier on you.
While beer is ok due to low alcohol quantities, stuff like champagne can really own you fast, especially when mixed with other things.

Getting started (for newbie drinkers):

1. Know your limits - use a couple of first times (3-4) to try different things and try to evaluate at which point you're getting tipsy/drunk/wasted.

2. Find your beverage - just like with food, there are many tastes in alcohol. Be it beer, wine or stronger stuff. You have to know what you like, what gets you drunk faster etc.

Beer - the king of social drinking

That's right, when you're out with friends, in a club, pub or whatever you can never go wrong with beer.

Pros:
- you can drink many
- you don't have to drink it fast
- inexpensive (if you only grab a few, the cost of beer when you want to get wasted can be ridiculous)

Cons:
- makes you piss a lot

Wine - it sucks

Just my opinion.

Try not to drink more than 3 bottles during a single evening.

Drinks - ummm...

They look cool.
They cost more than they're worth.
They're good for girls.

Strong stuff

Now we're hitting the good stuff, I won't talk about whisky here or anything similar since I don't like them much, but I think a few words about drinking stronger stuff is in place.

- Shots are the best (one of the reasons I hate whisky and stuff)
- If you drink quality stuff, you don't have to worry about hangover
- ...

There's like 191489471892471 things I want to write down here and I know it all should look different but I'll leave it for tomorrow or sometime soon since I'm way to tired to continue this effort. Any suggestions/questions meanwhile will be appreciated and I'll be sure to include as much as I can here.

UPDATE: Ok, let's give it a fresh start since I'm in a better form today. I will leave the previously written stuff as a curio.

Yet another disclaimer:

Anything I'm going to write down now will be directed at the majority of drinkers/wannabe drinkers, there are people who react differently to alcohol and I just won't cover all the possible cases because it would take too much space.
Do not get mad at me or this blog if some things aren't working for you, like I've already mentioned, people reactions to alcohol might vary, also there are better and worse days for drinking (dependant on the mood, people you're with, place you're at etc.) and better and worse beverages.

I think I should start with

1. Levels of intoxication:

Basically, when you're drinking alcohol and don't stop, you will go through several stages of intoxication. They could be most easily be described as:

1. Sober
2. Tipsy
3. Intoxicated (drunk)
4. Wasted

There of course may be additional sub-stages (like very tipsy, slightly drunk etc.) but this general four stated above should suffice for this blog.
Let's get into more detail about them:

1.1 Sober

We all know what does it mean, it is irrelevant for this blog thus I'll just skip it.

Important note!
Alcohol effects are not instant! It needs some time to get into your bloodstream and work its way on you. If you don't know if you're Tipsy od Drunk just give it 15-30 minutes without drinking alcohol and you should find out.

1.2 Tipsy

This is the very beginning stage of intoxication, usually you get here after 2-3 beers/drinks/shots and the alcohol begins its work on you.

- your humor goes up
- your courage goes up a bit (you're more likely to attempt feats you wouldn't do sober - like talking to a girl you always liked but you were too shy to do so etc.)
- you begin to talk more
- you are more open (talking about the things you normally wouldn't etc.)

- there are no real unwanted side effects yet

1.3 Drunk

Now this is the place you really want to be, just let it go and have fun
Usually you'll get here after 4-5 beers/4 drinks/4-5 shots.

- your humor goes way up
- your courage goes way up (punch this big dude in the face? Perform a sleazy striptease on the table? Why not?)
- you begin to talk a lot more
- you are very open (will reveal secrets to anyone etc.)
- you're having a time of your life!

Common side effects (apart from mentioned above) include:
- your coordination may be flawed
- you may feel a bit dizzy at times

1.4 Wasted

Now this is a place where you DON'T want to be
You know you're transitioning from Drunk -> Wasted by noticing the side effects (there are really no positive effects of being wasted, unless you drink to forget).

Common side effects include:
- sleepiness
- nausea
- extreme dizziness and disorientation
- split vision (seeing multiple things where there should be one, floating vision etc.)
- "slow mo" (why is everything around you happening so fast?)
- mumbling (you think you're talking fine, but people will have hard time understanding you)

2. Some traps when drinking alcohol:

Alcohol makes many tricks on your mind, it is good to know them (even though you can't/don't want to fight them in many cases).

The silent killer
"The greatest trick of Satan was to convince everyone he didn't exist, and he disappeared", the same is with alcohol. Like it was mentioned before, it needs some time to "kick in" so it's hard to judge how intoxicated you really are and you may transition to the wasted state before you even know it.
The best way to fight it is to make a break from drinking from time to time and switch to coke/juice or any other non-alcoholic beverage to give yourself some time for judgement.

What was also mentioned before: beware of the sparkling alcohols, they may taste good, you may feel great and then BAM! you're barely crawling on all fours, vomiting your insides out everywhere, shitting yourself etc.

Worth mentioning: strong beverages that you drink in shots (vodka, tequila etc.) follow all the rules of alcohol mentioned above, they also don't have an instant effect on you and because of the high quantity/alcohol ratio transitions to higher levels of intoxication may happen rapidly.

The mixing problem
Try not to mix different kinds/strengths of alcohol, vomiting and rapid intoxication level transitions assured.
If you do however mix, follow this few simple rules:
- it's a one way road, the schools may vary but going weakest -> strongest or strongest -> weakest should prevent the cataclysm
- if you follow one of the above roads there is no turning back! Can't go weakest -> strongest and then back
- if you're drinking flat (no bubbles) alcohols avoid mixing in any sparkling ones

Example of a very bad mixing scenario:

vodka -> beer -> vodka -> wine -> beer

Weak strong will
Here we are, the greatest mindtrick alcohol pulls on you. There are people who know when to stop drinking, I'm not such a person on 99% occasions, neither is 90% of the people who drink.
When you drink and you reach the drunk stage you'll just want to keep 'em coming, you're feeling great, you have the cash, your friends are still here, why then not get another beer?
No matter how much cash you bring with you, you'll most likely spend it all, if you can't spend it all alone, you'll order alcohol for your friends, if you don't have enough, they'll order for you.
That's the way this world works, accept it, learn to live with it.

3. The day after:
Now is the time for a downside of alcohol drinking: hangovers. They're a nightmare.

Common symptoms:
- headaches
- lightofobia (dunno how to better describe it, bright light just hurts)
- nausea
- cold sweat
- heart stampede
- any loud noises will feel like someone would hammer you on the head
- stuff like that ^_^

Note: from my experience beer/wine/drinks/champagne create monstrous hangovers while vodka gives you only a minor one if any.

Note to smokers: if you smoke you're bound to have worse hangovers, also this most precious first cigarette of the day can make you feel like dying (even if you've fought of a hangover and you're filling fine, then you smoke one and it all gets back at you only 10x stronger).

But don't despair, uncle Manit0u has some remedies up his sleeve to relieve you of most of those bad things!

Before and during drinking
- fat food: fat creates a defensive matrix around your stomach and much less alcohol gets into your bloodstream thus letting you drink more with less side effects, fighting hangovers becomes easier too (funny note: if you drink a glass of olive oil/frying oil or similar stuff before drinking you can pour alcohol into yourself and almost not get drunk, good trick to impress people if you can swallow a glass of oil of course)
- movement: eating and moving (dancing in a club for example) will ease the ill effects of alcohol on you while still letting you retain the positive ones
- non-alcohol: yes, making a pause now and then to take a swig of ice-cold juice or something will make you feel a lot better

After drinking but before going to sleep
Many people in replies here mentioned that drinking 0,5-1 litre of non-alcoholic beverage before sleep will give you less of a hangover or no hangover at all.
That is true (because most bad things hangover creates are the effects of dehydration caused by alcohol intake), unfortunately when you're drunk you never remember to do that and you end up having this hangover anyway.
Eat something and get a good sleep, that will help.

After waking up (OMFG! Call the priest, I'm dying!)
Drink, drink, drink. That's right, go and grab some fresh juice, water or something similar (soda and coffe are not very good right now).
Do it the polish way: drink one shot (I know, I know, even thinking about alcohol makes you sick now but trust me, if you force yourself and drink this one shot - or a light beer if you prefer - you'll automatically feel much better).
Take a dump: it'll stink as hell but will make you feel better.
Eat something (fat, remember?), chicken soup is perfect in this situations.
Drink, drink, drink. Added for emphasis.

If you're still feeling awful - go back to sleep and repeat.

I think that should cover the basics. I'll be sure to check out the responses and update this post with necessary stuff.

Although I'm not really into drinking, I think studying up a bit from experienced drinkers to avoid nightmare scenarios could be very good. Thank you for taking the time to write this and continue it, and I hope any other veterans can correct/add to this.

This seems like a pretty decent guide.

I've never had a drop of alcohol before and I don't intend to, but education is always for the best. Too many idiots fuck themselves up without knowing how to just drink normally.

well, one golden rule is to move about a bit when you are consuming alcohol in general. If you are at a house party or similar, make sure you dont sit in a couch all night drinking. Because the amount that makes you feel drunk while sitting down will make you feel utterly wasted when standing up again basically meaning youve had way too much and will end up cleaning someone elses toilet(...).

Also, never lie down when you are really drunk, it will most likelly turn your stomach around and give you vomit reflexes with in a minute.

for those of you who wants to know basic stuff regarding mixing drinks, the most common beers and a few really enjoyable kinds of whiskey, i did work as a student bartender voulontary and know a little bit about that subject (questions via pm). There is also more people in the manpower thread who has information about mixing drinks and different types of alcohol. Its under D for drinks.

Protip: If somebody says 'maybe you should go to the bathroom', what they are really saying is "If you vomit right here I will fucking kill you." And no matter how drunk you are, vomiting all over a complete stranger is NEVER ok. (I was the pukee, not the puker. )

Wait what!?!
Is this a cultural thing or are you like 12 or what?
I don't get it. I mean if you said you'd never smoke that'd be fair enough I guess but never having any alcohol? I just don't understand why somebody would say that.

After you have some experience being drunk, you start to develop "I'm going to regret this later" instinct. That little voice in the back of your head will be your best friend from then on.

Once you have that, drinking is a blast.

I don't like the taste of alcohol, nor does the idea of drunkenness appeal to me. But I don't look down on other people for drinking, I know it's usually just a social thing. Just not for me.

- Expensive as fuck
- usually not the best thing to drink when you are just chatting with friends and having fun at parties. Some kind of white wine could be okay but red wine is definitly not appropriate.

However you are damn right with beer. This si cheap as fuck compared to wine or others alcohols + you can really "chose" your level of drunkenness
It is the best thing to drink at parties or with friends ( while not eating ).

Strong alcohols usually suck imo except some home-made brandys and top notch Armagnacs. It tastes horrible and is only useful if you really want to get completly wasted quickly.

+ I just wanted to say that i love white Porto. It isn't a "normal" wine ( too high ° ) but damn it is really awesome. My favourite drink.
Oh and i HATE Martini and Whisky.

Oh and also since I am a addict I never really recovered. For no hangovers I know my limits on beer and when I drink hard liquor I only mix with gingeral and/or mineral water which reduces the chance of receiving a hangover which really limits the liquor I do drink. Only mixed drink I drink with any sugared sodas is Crown and Coke but thats meh.

I'm only 17 but i have lots of experience drinking because I'm from eastern europe (former yugoslavia) and have many eastern european friends. my countries national drink is called Rakija (rah-ki-ya), it is 60% alchohol and is also taken in shots, i recommend it to everyone, it's distilled from peaches and is tasty, its considered more of a delicacy because of that. (e.g not like vodka, i like it but...potatos? im not a cossack!). So... there is my little cultural imput on drinking!

-edit- also, whats all this talk of hangovers? as long as you drink water after you will be fine, aren't hangovers cause by dehydration of the brain?

Croat?

I agree that beer is a good choice, especially for novice drinkers. If you don't know your tolerance, you can simply nurse a couple for the entire night. Totally works for socials too.

Cheap wine is just so fucking terrible ( usually ) that it is not even worth its ( cheap ) price.
+ if you really want to get drunk you will find different kind of beers cheaper with high ° ( 8 <-> 10)
So yea it is expensive if you don't want to drink something super mega bad and i consider wine expensive fo its °/price ratio.

Getting wasted with cheap red wine is probably an horrible and unclassy experience + it will be more expensive than with beer.

If you're going to write a "guide to alcohol" then you should really write more than just "beer is good, wine is bad, whisky and "stuff" is bad, only drink hard alcohol in shots." Everyone's tastes are different, and a lot of drinks are an acquired taste.
Can't believe I'm still here playing this same game

Actually Beer works fine with Hard stuff both ways.
Only way it doesn't work so well is if you use beer as a shot breaker - in which scenario you'll get drunk up much more faster than usually - but hey maybe you want that anyway.

Wine does NOT go well with any alcohol.

With beer you can pretty much control how much drunk you are as it goes slowly.
Greatest disadvantage of beer isn't pissing but actually it may fuck up your digesting and make you want fart and shit.

Hard stuff - you can't control your flow, usually you end up drunk just too much - possibly with vomits and blackouts. Way to make it controlable is to mix Hard stuff with non-alcohol or drink fancy drinks : juice + vodka, cola + whiskey (both are pretty good).

Lastly to prevent hangovers and stuff on the other day drink about 1L non-alcohol liquid before sleep.
- It's all just treason - They bring me down with their lies - Don't know the reason - My life is fire and ice -

I don't believe that bubble thing at all. Dissolved carbon dioxyde has nothing at all to do with absorption of alcohol into the blood stream.

The reason champagne "sneaks up on you" is that you don't realize how alcoholic it is while drinking it because of the taste and bubbles.

I think you should add about the time delay for getting drunk.

If you're going to include parts for newbies saying stuff like "have some testers 3-4 to find out when you're getting buzzed/wasted" you should include the fact that it takes a bit of time for drinks to kick in, so if they're starting to feel buzzed on their first time or so, take a break, because they might have drank enough already to get drunk as it is, and if they drink more they could get totally wasted without that intention.

so yeah im drunk atm, drank a bottle of wine, so let me share my experience that i have accumulated in my last 5 years of drinking.

the op said that its ok to go from lighter stuff to harder drink, i for one have revealed that this leads to bad things, many times have i started a party with 5-6 beers only to find myself drinking hard liquor in a circle with friends after that, that usually = me not remembering how i got home, its best by far to just stick to one kind of drink all night long.

also a very important thing, if you are drinking shots, try to get a glass of watter in between then, saved my ass when i was drinking absinthe, water is very important in keeping cool.

If you feel like its going bad, stop drinking for a while and just switch to juice/watter for a while, fuck all the haters making fun of you, better that than just randomly waking up at home thinking wtf have i done.

try not to smoke too much when drinking, i dont know how it works for most people but i just get wasted faster.

i find pickles to be very tasty when im drunk.

also, if you ever drink hard stuff, and find that you have drank quite a lot of it already, but you are still kinda sober, stop right there, you are probably gonna be piss drunk in about 15 minutes, no point in making it worse, WATER IS YOUR FRIEND.

dont drink if you haven;t eaten before or during, you will just get drunk a lot faster, but also try to avoid overeating, you will just puke all over the place.

the morning after:
i have woken up many times sick out of my skull, again drink plenty of watter, and try to get as much sleep in as possible, i find it best to sleep in small intervals of 40-60 mins about 5 times a day, every time i wake up i feel a little better, but it depends on the person, showering can sometimes help too. ( i also sometimes get mad cravings for fried food after im done being sick)

dont chug stuff, thats how i get most of my drinking done, fast, that can lead to you thinking you are still sober, while actually you are gonna be drunk in about 15-20 minutes, take it slow and easy or again risk waking up at home having no idea how you got there.

most important thing is knowing your own limits, if you are drinking for the first time, chances are 4 beers will be more than enough for you ( 0,5 beers with 5% alcohol, thats the norm here)
So dont try to show off by drinking more than you can take, it also depends on how you are built, obv if you are bigger = you can take more alcohol.

ive been told ( never tried it myself ) that if you are pretty messed up, forcing yourself to puke can help speed up the sobering process, now i wont vouch for this since i never tried it.

i cant remember any more now, im sure it will come to me when i sober up.
Now let me tell you some stuff that happened to me whilst drunk so you know i can back this shit up !

1) drank 1l of whiskey, jumped on a friends car, woke up the day after at noon still drunk as a moron.
2) drank a lot of wine with a friend at a party, randomly woke up at home with a womens coat on me
3) drank too much hard stuff with beer 20 miles away frome home, feel asleep on grass - woke up at home, was carried by friends, parents suspect i did drugs.

there are a lot more bad things that happened that id rather not go into, alcohol is bad mkay ?

Now id like to write a thing or two about drinks i enjoy.

Ive talked to some of my foreign friends and i see most of them have never had Red wine + coca cola, we call this bamboo over here, and its pretty good and a popular drink, mix 50-50% most of the time or according to your own taste.
I also enjoy vodka + sprite 30-70 with some lemon if you have it
gin+sprite/tonic water same applies
Mineral watter (sparkling) + white wine, we also drink this a lot here, its mostly a cheap way to get drunk but it can be ok too, also mix 50 50 or according to taste.
Rum+coke, awesome drink, just watch how much rum you put in ^^.

also someone before me mentioned the infamous * Rakija *, and il tell you, most of the time its not made out of peaches, thats schnaps, most of the time here in ex yugoslavia its made in a few variants, distiled grapes = loza, herbs = travarica, pears = vilijamovka, prunes = sljivovica, but it can be made from more or less anything ( im currently making a lemon one ) and its mostly veeery high alcoholic and can double as a window cleaner / disinfecting fluid, dont mess with that it will get you drunk very fast .

Thats my alcohol guide, i cant remember a ton of other stuff now since im kinda... but you get the picture, and also very important, if one of you friends drinks too much, make sure to take care of him and make sure he gets home safely.

and dont even think about driving or i will come to your house and kill you !

I think it's important to pace yourself after you reach that tipsy stage. Many a time have I gotten to the point where I didn't mind the alcohol taste only to make the stupid decision to start drinking faster. Let's just say those aren't the most fun mornings. That was when I was younger but it still rarely happens.

Passing out is the worst as it leaves you completely vulnerable to things like being drawn on. We did that to a friend of mine a couple years ago and he didn't even notice till like hours later after he was outside publicly. Felt pretty bad after.

There's one rule they will avoid all troubles with Alcohol: Know your limits. That's all there is to it. If you've never been as drink as you are now, don't drink more. Its that simple. And always remember drinks can talk thirty minutes to kick in, so don't slam down a double shot and think "huh, I'm not drunk". Trust me, it's coming.

Also make sure to drink plenty of water. It will take care of your thirst, make sure you can't drink more than you really need to. It also seems to lessen the effects of a hangover, but that's really unscientific.

As far as mixing drinks and what gets you drunker, I don't believe a word of it. Drinkers seem to have this gospel of different drink strengths and mixing drinks is bad, but I've never found that to be the case in the slightest. The only truth in getting drunk is how much alcohol you drink.

Also, I drink wine at parties all the time. I guess the parties I go to are just more cool and sophsticated than the ones you g to

This is extremely funny because when I visited Manit0u 9 months ago, I had a 20 hour train ride behind me, and I still owned him, drinking-wise. He got himself mugged by a 14 year old girl, after the guard at the door threw him out of the bar for vomiting on the front steps, and lost his cell phone in the process.

True story.

No offense Manit0u, but I waited over 9 months to tell that story. It had to be. <3

OK, I want to vent something here. I suck at doing shots. But, sometimes I can't avoid doing them when I'm out drinking with friends. So, if I feel like I can't handle doing shots, I try and be sly and only drink part of the shot. But EVERY TIME I do that, there's always some asshole who's like "ah ha! You didn't finish! Drink it drink it drink! Now do another one! hahaha." I can't win .

Your whole beer before hard stuff goes against what I was taught....

The say I learned was:
Liquor before beer, you're in the clear.
Beer before liquor, you've never been sicker.

Mixing different types of alcohol is a myth. The only reason people think liquor before beer in the clear is because people misjudge the impact of the amount of alcohol in liquor. For example, if you've already had 3 beers and you take 3 shots your gonna feel sick because you have effectively double your intake in a matter of seconds. As long as you keep the alcohol intake consistant the form it comes in is unimportant.

C'mon, gimme a break here

That was a perfect example of bad alcohol mixing (zubrowka with lemon -> beer -> zubrowka and so on).

Zubrowka is awesome though. If anyone can get their hands on it, buy as much as you possibly can. I still have one bottle left, saving it up for a special occasion. That occasion will most likely be Manit0u's visit though. None of my German friends can truly appreciate a good vodka. Fucking cretins. Pffft.

THIS MAN KNOWS! LISTEN TO THE MESSIAH!!! <3 besi

-jokes aside, drink water before going to sleep, and the next day. VERY IMPORTANT.

-don't close your eyes while you're drunk, the world will just start spinning at incredible speeds. xD

-red wine + coca-cola (50%+50%) = bamboo = WINRAR
(cheep, good and you don't get drunk so fast, try to avoid buying the cheepest wine (ribar), since that = bad taste + headache the next day)

-white wine + sparkling water = gemišt/gemischt (don't like it that much, but it's ok, girls pretty much digg it though)

-black beer > white beer.

-I presonally couldn't physically stand beer, it was disgusting. (at least the cheep one; more expensive beers on the other hand are very good) but I somehow managed to make it berable to drink, it surely is "THE social drink", so get used to it. there are a many kinds of beer, so make sure you try them all to find the "lesser evil" of them all.

-as besier said, when drinking lots of strong drinks, one moment you'll be fine, the next moment you'll wake up at various places and won't remember what you did inbetween.
(like saying I love you to my best female friend and not knowing you said it (that can be ankward :< )) so when you see you're already pretty drunk, slow down or shit's gonna hit the fan.

the op has also some good points.

Yeah, it helps, the problem is that when you're drunk you just want to go to sleep and you never ever remember about that.

Two of the most important drinking tips ever. Water before you go to bed is SO helpful in the morning. Although I can't stand the taste of water in the morning, I usually go for something sweet like Iced Tea or soda. Sugar is key.

Spinning = worst drinking experiences EVER. Oh God.

I usually determine if I should stop drinking by doing exactly that. Close eyes, if you feel like in a carousel, get some water, go head, sleep it off. If nothing spins, you're fine, get another drink.

haha, good update
I loved the pic at the end

Also I'd like to add in few things:
About mixing - it's usually alright to mix beer with vodka (or similar stuff) and wine with champagne (but not one inbetween the other, when you change your drink you're not coming back), cross-mixing them can be really bad, and mixing 3 or more leads to a disaster! Trust me on this one, I learned it the hard way (more than once ;] but one was especially tragic)

To help hangovers it's always good to take a bath/shower - it will provide your body with water without drinking it (cause you can't drink as much as you'd like to without pissing). Eating yoghurt or other dairy products also helps, much more so than "normal" food (although it can make you puke that is, if you have a weak stomach). Also, if it's possible, avoid water - it makes your body process alcohol more slowly, if you can choose then drink something else - be it juice, tea, coffee etc (I don't know it myself, since I never drink soda, but something tells me it would be also bad to drink it). But' of course, drinking anything is always better than drinking nothing, so you definately should drink water when not having any alternatives.
It's also quite a known fact, that the more power in a drink, the lesser hangover. As Manit0u already mentioned, vodka is the best in this aspect (well, 96% spirit is even better, but will you manage to drink it ?), wine and champagne are quite bad (much worse than vodka) and beer is the worst.

And Manit0u, you mentioned that one should wait 15-30 min before noticing the effect - are you sure the average is that low?
I usually get effects after like 50 min when drinking vodka, even without the "fat defensive matrix" ;]. I don't know, maybe I'm special
W/e, just you know people, be ready for it to strike even later, don't think that "30min passed and I'm sober, I can drink a shitload more" cause that may lead to doom. Lower beverages of course act faster, especially beer can be felt after just a few minutes.

Well, that would be all for now
If anybody has any questions then sure, go on, I may be not as experienced as Manit0u (I'm only 22, so just 6 years of experience but it sure was intense experience!), but still I have good knowledge on the subject. Cheers

I'd add

The day after:
- loss of appetite
- vomiting? XD (only if you drank a rediculous amount, something bad or mixed too much)

depending on your physical condition, and amount drank the hangover can last even 2 days xD

Uh, yeah I believe I should've mentioned it in the thread that beer = 0,5L, shot = 50mL (depending on a bar though, it can go from 20 to 100mL).

Mixing different drinks is just a myth. It doesn't matter. When I go to the bar I usually have a bunch of beers beforehand. Then I get to the bar and I'll have AMFs, beers, shots and Jack & Cokes or whatever. It doesn't matter, the beer before liquor (and vise versa) thing is a myth.

The only thing that matters is what/how much you eat and how much sugar the drinks have. If you drink really sugary drinks or chase shots with half a coke then you're either gonna puke, pass out, and/or have a brutal hangover the next day. If your stomache is empty obviously it won't be as easy to start jamming all kinds of stuff in it (regardless of order) and you will be more susceptible to alcohol poisoning and get drunk/wasted much faster which usually leads to a hangover unless you balance your drinking with water throughout the night.

Also, best way to battle a hangover is to take a vitamin and drink lots of water. If possible take a vitamin before bed and grab a huge cup and fill it with 80% ice and rest water and place it by your bed while you sleep. This way you can drink water if you wake up thirsty in the night, and have it there in the morning in case you have a brutal hangover where you don't even wanna get up to get some water when you know you need it.

I have been hangover free following my own advice (even while mixing all kinds of drinks throughout the nights) for over a year. The only exception was New Year's Eve, in which I had no beer and my gf was mad at me and wouldn't share hers and I didn't eat proper lunch/dinner.
So I started raiding the kitchen for whatever there was (which was Malibu Rum) and mixed it Tampico and later some SoCo. All sugar. passed out. Missed 12:00 AM. 'came to' outside in the street where I thought I was somewhere else. Walked home. Bad hangover.

Most common causes to my hangovers:
Standard Rums-especially Captain Morgan's spiced rum(usually too much sugar)
Coconut Rums (waay too much sugar)
Southern Comfort (too much sugar)
Jeigermiesiter (way too much sugar and nasty anyways)
Sake (some are too sweet)
Schnapps [usually any flavor] (this shit is designed for minor use in drinks, do not drink them as the main ingredient)
Mixed drinks designed for girls, such as; pink panties, sex on the beach, malibu bay breeze, etc. etc. (again more sugar than ABV)
Physical exertion while intoxicated (fighting or other challenges)
Empty Stomache.
Didn't drink enough water that day.
Girls getting me to take shots with them all night.

edit- Oh yea, I hate wine too. That shit usually always gives me headaches and I don't like the taste of the standard cheap wines that people usually have at parties.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

1. Do you really have beer in the US?
2. By 'Drunk after 4-5 beers' in the OP I mean the beginning of being drunk (just as you pass the tipsy stage) which is not really a big deal
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.
