Well this is a very lacking OP but I do want to point out that the same exact thing happened to me haha.

For those who are confused: go is a board game (see my much previous blog) and kgs has rankings. If you lose to someone, and then win vs good players, that first guy you lost to receives credit for being better than you after you beat the good players.... so rank can jump around a lot.

not everyone can read swedish

and thanks to micro for the explanation, I hope the rest of you stop derailing this thread
(I thought this topic would be about G.O. lol)

So as you grow as a player all of your past opponents ratings will be skewed because the computer thinks you are and have always been and will always be the same skill level?

Or is it just your first opponent?

Edit: And doesn't that mean that one single game could potentially change the stats of thousands of users?

Isn't this more or less how ELO works? Regardless, I think the effect of earlier games slowly wanes, so it isn't a big deal in the long run.

Idk how ELO works tbh. But if that were the case, I would think it more fitting. I would say that progamers skill level is less likely to change very quickly. They are essentially all at the cutting edge, so even a small dip or rise in skill level can mean the difference between a title or a slump. However, I am sure most go players using this site are not professional, and in the course of ten games or less can become several times the player they were before.

Elo is simple, you start at 2000 points, whenever you beat someone you are given points based on the difference between your points, more points if the person you beat was higher and less if they were lower.

But I think it also keeps track of your history. If you win against someone on day one who had a 2000 elo, and then he wins straight to 2300, I think you benefit slightly.

It's only 21k... it doesn't matter how much you boost him. 30k to 10k is still a player learning the basics. (Equivalent to a D- on iccup?)

No ELO was first created for games like GO/Chess

I believe that some Go servers keep track of your most recent 20 games or so and modify your opponents' score changes from those games as your score changes ("undo" the score change, recalculate the score change as if you just finished playing that game at your CURRENT rank, and re-assign the new score to your former opponent - this will be the same if your rank didn't change).

This is to keep the noob bashers from making new 30k accounts and skipping to 5d while pushing maybe 50 unfortunate players down by half a rank.

(BTW, anyone want to play?)
