WHAT ARE INTELECT?

-edit (forgot to add the actual blog post, lol)

People often make claims about how intelligent they are, but how can this really be measured? I know people with high IQ's who appear to be less intelligent than people with lower IQ's, and such. While this just may be an anomaly, are there multiple intelligences?

When people say someone is 'smart' what does that mean? How do you define intelligence?

People don't really think about what they mean when they say someone is intelligent or smart. Is a math savant "smart"? Is a brilliant writer who has no number reasoning "smart"? Is a progamer "smart"?

I think you would need 100% solid scientific evidence to answer your question for you to believe it, which I don't think exists. So the logical question arises, why ask this question in the first place?

I think it's pretty ridiculous to make a blanket judgment over the fact that I believe in the scientific process. I don't reject everything not proven by science.

Because people tend not to think about words like this that mean so many different things. But I'm interested to know how people define a word like this, that has no real definition in common usage.

Yes it's a good question and my answer is that you definitely have to apply the word intellect to something. Emotional intelligence, spacial awareness, calculation, comedy, they are all functions of the intellect.

I think you can break intellects down into two types: processors and humans. Human intellects can't be measured, but processors can. Because it's just a matter of calculations per second.

An expert diplomat might have an extremely sharp human intellect, whereas an idiot savant might have an off the charts processor intellect. The raw, calculation, perception and verbal functions are the types of intellect that can be counted. Imagination, emotion, intuition, comicality, creativity, cannot be tested.

Order out of chaos of course. Order as in the ability to reduce entropy to extremely low levels. Technology is one such extremely ordered system. Being a great politician and getting people to work together is also a highly ordered state. Being able to anticipate anther's actions is ordered. Great poetry and literature is ordered.

I agree, that intelligence is manifested in multiple forms. A lot of people swear by processing ability.

My Poli Sci professor says that intelligence is the ability to quickly deduce solutions to problems and nothing else. However, most Psychologists and people who study intelligence agree that intelligence is multi-faceted.

It's wrong because people criticized my post before I edited and corrected it and because people didn't understand that the question was intentionally misspelled?

If it's alright with you, I'd like to discuss the subject matter, since I'm pretty sure all the criticism is based on a misunderstanding.

There is no right or wrong, or quick answer. I did the best on the SATs out of my family but that doesn't mean I'm the most intelligent. IQ tests are mostly bs.

Since you mentioned multiple intelligences...

I had to study the theory of multiple intelligences by Dr. Howard Gardner from Harvard. He breaks intelligence down into several components:

-Linguistic intelligence ("word smart"):
-Logical-mathematical intelligence ("number/reasoning smart")
-Spatial intelligence ("picture smart")
-Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence ("body smart")
-Musical intelligence ("music smart")
-Interpersonal intelligence ("people smart")
-Intrapersonal intelligence ("self smart")
-Naturalist intelligence ("nature smart")

but that's just his take on it and is by no means conclusive.

intelligence:
1) understanding and the ability to regurgitate facts and stuff => brute force memorization and familiarity

2) the ability to think of new things, to create, form new ideas and add to the society's general brain. often requires a lot of familiarity of a subject in the first place (re (1)), and what some might call 'creativity' even though that is debatable.

basically computers are only good at #1, drawing conclusions like #2 shows is a human thing. the importance of either section compared to each other isn't straightforward, nor is it straightforward to measure the amount of one of these in a human. most good ideas come from luck mixed in with so-called 'genius' anyways.

tl;dr no good way to measure intelligence, isnt that obvious?

I don't think there's a good way to measure intelligence. People are smart in different ways, and everybody has their own talents and such, or are better at some things than others are. To truly measure intelligence, you must take into account everything that actually denotes intelligence, like reaction time, common sense, academics, music and art, athletic stuff and body coordination, etc. The list goes on forever.

Intelligence is in fact probably best measured just by other your friends who know you, and they kinda decide how intelligent you are compared to those around you.

Smart is more of being academically intelligent, so it may not apply to a writer how can't crunch numbers, or a progamer who isn't very good in school. However, you can say they are intelligent instead, and it would be true.
No dough, no go. And no mercy.

I've always thought of it as being in three classes.

Smart- Your ability to process information quickly. (A smart person would be very good at math)

Knowledge- How much shit you know and can retain. (A knowledgeable person would be very good at history)

Intelligence- The ability to understand and apply your knowledge. (An intelligent person would be very good at composition)

I can see where he is coming from...I think he probably would accept all of the other types of intelligence, but would attach prefix words to them. He probably considers raw intelligence to be processing power.

I'm not sure that's related to intelligence so much as to control. Scientists created the atom bomb...And what contemporary society had more 'order' than Nazi Germany? And Hitler was pretty dumb.
