Also, I don't know if this is in there but if you press the first alphanumeric character when in a folder it will jump to it. So like
C:/Program Files then press 'S' and it'll take you to starcraft (or near it anyways).

and if you keep pressing it it will scroll down through the S's.

This is the same kind of idea when you are in your cell phone contact list.

Another big one that I use a lot is Ctrl+Alt+Del , alt+u, alt+u . (try it)

- Hide Spoiler -
i always turn my monitor off before shutting down in a hurry , and this helps cause I can't see the manual start menu way anymore.

Also, Carnac told me that if you hold alt when you press print screen that it will just copy the window that is on top (or in use). So you don't have to have an RPF moment lol.

I found another neat trick: (works great if you're like me and fall asleep watching movies on your comp)
Go to Start Menu > Run > Type 'cmd' to bring up command prompt for dos
then type in shutdown. This will show you the varying different commands.
But the ones that we want are: "shutdown -s -t *amount of time* (the time is in seconds only), and "shutdown -a" to abort any shutdowns in progress.

5 min = 300 seconds
15 min = 900 seconds
30 min = 1800 seconds
1 hour = 3600 seconds
2 hours = 7200 seconds

example command would be

shutdown -s -t 5400

(this is an hour and a half)

Windows key + E opens up my computer. That's pretty useful. Windows key + D shows desktop (press again to restore), also pretty good (since I have both of these as buttons to click with my mouse, I didn't know there were keyboard cuts).

You fall asleep watching movies on your comp? Do you lie in bed while watching?

I wonder how many people still bother to power down their comps overnight...

yea , I do. It saves power and hardware if you turn it off right? I think the old computer myth about leaving it on for XX time uses less power than a boot up is wrong if it is anything like the light bulb myth that mythbusters did.

Computers don't use that much power and rebooting it daily probably does reduce the life of the computer but I don't have sources to back it up. I think it doesn't make a big deal either way so you aren't making a big mistake in either case.

What did mythbusters conclude? I didn't see that one. How many minutes until it's worth turning off a light? 10?

no, it's instant. The only light that consumes more power on startup would be those flourescent tubes and shit where the gas has to heat up. And even then it's only a few dozen seconds or something.

I think MB should really do a revisit on this myth for computers,TVs, radios and other appliances.
Because of shit like vampire power, things use an awful lot of power when off (technically a standby mode).

I think you aren't accounting for the reduced life of the bulb though.

it's like only 2 seconds for those big industrial lights. But yeah they didnt test for the life of the lightbulb just if there was a significant power difference compared to leaving them on constantly, or having turn on use alot of power.

And yes they concluded it's always always better to turn them off.

howevever "The answer is in the fact that the electricity consumed by a typical household bulb during its life usually costs many times more than the bulb does. Bulbs are so cheap compared to the electricity consumed by them during their lifetime that it pays to make them more efficient by having the filaments run hot enough to burn out after only several hundred to about a thousand hours or so."

So it's still worth it to turn it off when you leave the room

I actually wanted to post and say thank you for this. Sometimes I upload to YouTube for 2-3 hours but dont feel comfortable leaving my computer on that long if I dont have to. This is extremely handy and didnt expect to find something like that in this thread.

My homie Pholon just showed me a neat trick in notepad. When you want to protect the names of the innocent in chat logs you can open the saved chats in notepad, then go Edit>Replace (Ctrl+H). Then just type the name of the person and replace it with another name and hit 'Replace ALL'. Now you can post the logs online and not have your online buddies being spammed/harassed!
