Holy shit man.......
How can you live with yourself without having played Fallout OR Grim Fandango?!#="

this can only be won over by a combination of SC2,RA3,DoW2, D3, WotLK and some other ridiculous franchise all released within the same year.

Parasite Eve is a pretty awesome RPG. I actually just finished beating it like a week ago. I'll probably start Parasite Eve 2 sometime later. I'm also looking forward to Parasite Eve 3rd Birthday for the PSP... whenever that comes out...

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 was officially released in 1999 but I remember playing it in 1998. Either way that list rapes evin without HoMM 3.
|
It wins, because Pokemon Red, and Blue came out.
|
I played Fallout and Grim Fandango and didn't like either of them

Oh my god, Baldur's Gate? Win indeed.
|
Holy shit I have to go play Grim Fandango now.
And Banjo-Kazooie as soon as I can find my N64.
|
Not bad, really. I've always thought that around 2000 (+/- 2 years) some of the best games ever were released.
|
Who cares about all the other games. The fact that starcraft and broodwar came out that year makes it the best year in video game history. No other game has even come close to matching broodwar imo.
|
Quality games, they sure don't make them like they used too. *dusts off his N64*
|
I never noticed that before. It's definitely true.

I remember almost all of them but I only cared for SCBW, HL and Unreal.
Over the history of computer games I only really cared about Starcraft CounterStrike Jagged Alliance Civilization Duke Nukem
So I guess 1998 still wins for Starcraft and HL. 1999 is a close 2nd though.
Edit: phew, almost forgot The Duke

That's never going to get topped, ever.

Cant believe u are leaving out final fantasy vii (its actually 1997, but pc version came out on 98 so I'd count it in)!

I've always heard that the Thief series was good, but now I see why I never played it. There's no way that many top titles could be released within 2 weeks of each other anymore. I remember how hard it was to get a copy of OoT on launch day too. My stepbrother and I drove to so many stores until we found a Circuit City that had copies left.
Tribes wasn't hugely popular, but it was the predecessor for the Battlefield series, Planetside, et al. It was years ahead of its time, suffered from patching problems, and lagged because almost no one had broadband in 1998. It still holds a special place in the hearts of everyone who played it back then.

I said the exact same thing, that 1998 was best, in a GameFaqs top ten list, the top ten years for gaming. It got rejected. Boo gamefaqs.

Grim Fan-fucking-dango. What an awesome game, (even though I had to use the walkthrough for 40% of it..*ahem*). And Baldurs' Gate.... the nostalgia!!!
|
~Baldur's Gate~
Amen
( + sc / unreal / half life / fallout 2 ) but Baldur's gate alone is enough..

1998 was truly a great year...

Yes 1998 is widely regarded as the greatest year in gaming history. A couple years back Gamespot (back when they were in their height and still had a lot of great editors) did a special on G4 called "The Greatest Year in Gaming," and they named gave 1998 the title. Their reasoning being that virtually every game genre had either been defined or redefined. Most other years can't compete simply because their greatest releases are just sequels to games that came out in 1998 (like 2004).

I fucking cry for you man, I cry for you.

November 20 <---> November 30 is just sick oO
Those 10 days mean more for me than 1998 - 2008 ( except for Deus Ex ;D )
10 Days > 10 years. That shows how bad the game industry is for ages.

That's the list of games that I played. The only thing I regret about my childhood is that the only console I had access to was a Sega Mega Drive, although to this day I think the Sonic games are grrrrrreat. Except for SA2 onwards, those don't exist.
I have to say Fallout 1 is probably what changed my life and made me a gamer. It was the first real game that I had just been "dropped into", I was about 9 or 10 and I was told how to move, how to switch combat modes, and how to kill things. That was it, I was left on my own to discover the post-apocalyptic world. I don't think any gaming memory of mine can come close to beating Fallout 1 for the first time; it took me literal months. The first time I played through (as kids are wanton to do) I tried to kill everyone in The Hub - that didn't work out too well, because they all had Combat Armor and submachine guns or automatic rifles. I also remember the fact that there was a really cool NPC named Ian who would follow you, and the guy who gave me the game was also called Ian, so I protected that NPC with my life yo.
Sigh... good times. I relived this phenomenon when Fallout 2 came out, and even more so when I discovered you could keep playing after the game was ended. I still have to wonder how many people don't know about the "Fallout 2 Answerbook" and the PC you can access in Vault City after the game. I remember having a contest with one of my friends to see who could get the highest positive karma, we gave up at like 3.5k with the title Savior of the Damned.
Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel came a few years later, and while obviously not the same as the previous 2, I have to say it was still a brilliant game in its own right. The multiple endings rocked too, I liked that in all 3 of the Fallout series.
Don't talk to me about Fallout 3 though. -_-

fallout did not suck.. it was one of the games that spawned their own universes - as a lot of the games above did! half-life - it created a truely believable environment starcraft - spawned a whole franchise of books etc. fallout 2 - a whole world to explore
