HeavOnEarth, you had the events down right, so what's confusing about it? The US's interest is its own national security rather than the welfare of other countries. At that time, that translates to anything that works against the Soviet Union. Castro, the Afghans, whoever. They were allies of convenience, those who shared the same enemy rather than the same goals, just as we had allied with the Soviet Union against the threat that Germany was in the WWII. Now, even with the Vietnamese having a democratic government and being amiable toward the United States, that weights less for the NATO agenda than the support of France. The only position to be taken would be to support the French. There are no ideals in this situation, only the results of cold calculations for what should benefit the nation the most under the assumption that the main enemy is the Soviet Union and all that it stands for. | ||

They didnt really had to fight the Japanese because war was over but then Ho chi minh who was still a nobody in 1945  proclaimed the independence and he was helped by Soviet Union + China.
