Protoss to Zerg: Day Five
Current iCCup stats: 15-20-0 1930
Today I want to talk about cheesing as a Zerg. Especially at lower ranks, like D, D+, C- and maybe even C; it's usually not too hard to cheese. You can do a build that catches them totally off guard and because they aren't very good, they usually don't know the correct counters and whatnot.
So basically, I think that cheesing as a Zerg is really easy, at least ATM. I could most likely play like a total ass all the way to C- or C. That won't make me a better Zerg though, I'l just be that guy that you call a faggot to your friends. So i've been unsure whether it's worthwhile to even do a build like 9pool speedlings. If there is an opening to use it and I do. I didn't really learn anything. I am not playing to get sexy stats (although that would be nice) I am doing this to get better in general. Basically i've been unsure whether it's worth my time to take an opportunity like that when I know it's not really helping me.
Yet, I digress. Onto the recap game.
Recap game:
In keeping with todays theme:
I blanked out a letter in his name to keep him anonymous. There is no way you can guess what his name was. Don't even try.. not possible.
This guy starts off the game by doing one of the most annoying and arrogant things players can do... being cute. I absolutely hate it. This isn't the first time a guy has done this to me, but it really gets on my nerves. I should probably explain that there are a few things I look for when deciding whether or not I am going to play really gay or cheese. If the player is obviously much better I might do it, if hes talked shit somewhere I might also, but above all else; if they act cute in a game with me, oh man, I am going to cheese you bad.
What he is doing right here is hitting my drone, than dancing away like an idiot. I hate stuff like that, it's ranks a 10 on my 'scale of annoying-ness'. It shares a spot with Atrioc.
Now because I was thinking about how I am going to gay the hell out of this guy, I wasn't really paying attention and this happens.
I am actually surprised this happened because in a ZvT I usually send my overlord to scout, but I don't send it to a corner, I send it so it will scout along the cliff or ridge. I guess I fucked up. Whoooooops.
So after raping my overlord, I am sure this guy came to a couple of conclusions: 1 ) His opponent might be an idiot 2 ) The game is five minutes in, and hes already over his supply
Based on that, he decides to move out with eight or so marines an SCV that in fearlessly leading the charge.
I've already decided that I am just going to mass the hell out of speedlings though and try to run him over.
Operation Attack Move was a complete success
So I bust up his attack, run all the way to his base and because I have like nine drones, my macro is fucking perfect. When I get in his base, hes thrown up a bunker.
Only a complete fucking idiot would attack that.
Yep.. only a fucking idiot..
Son of a bitch
Now I am thinking this guy concluded another thing: Yep hes an idiot.
Fortunately for myself, I am sneaky and I hide some zerglings in a corner
The plush-doll Ninja speaks for itself.
Meanwhile at home, I have achieved what I like to call the cheesers economy..
Seriously though, those two drones were working their ass off
So I am wayyyy behind, but I am fortunate enough that he moves in a position that is literally perfect for my ninja-zergling-squadron to flank. You may notice that I have been rather lucky this whole game. Theres a saying though, 'I'd rather be lucky than good.'
Operation Attack Move 2.0 was a complete success
Finally...
I slightly outnumber him
General matchup feeling:
ZvP: Fuck this matchup. I hate it so much lol. I thought I would be kicking ass but I am so good at throwing games. If you think you know someone who is better than I am at this, I challenge you to bring them to me. I have played a few games where my army micro was so bad that although I outnumbered him by ratios of 2:1, I wind up losing.
I definately blame the Protoss race for this. I have had the luxury of being able to attack move with great success for far too long. That's ironic considering my major attacks in the recap game were attack moves as well, but if I take that into account, I can't blame the Protoss race. And I really, really want to blame them, so I am.
ZvT: Getting better at this matchup. I have finally figured out how to successfully attack and I have better buildorders that I have been using. I still don't feel confident enought versus decent players, but the people I've lost to were pretty good so far and I put up a fight.
ZvZ: This matchup is bizarre. It's like rock paper scissors, but with a random chance of losing for almost no reason. Sometimes I think I have countered his build perfectly, and I wind up losing anyways. So than next game I copy that and my opponent does what I did last game and rapes me. It's like a big fuck you, right in my face. Not cool. Still fun though.
General mood: I think I've got my build orders and general play style down, I just need more experience and than I can start to see some results. I am about D+ level and I guess that isn't too bad.
I mean, if I was playing RTS all the time and I started with Zerg, but my friend just switched to it and started beating the hell out of me in ZvZ's, THAN perhaps I would be mad, but it's not like thats happening. What do you think Atrioc? Ya' big ass.
Check back tomorrow :D

when are you on? I just started playing iccup and I haven't played many zergs (1). I play Terran btw
|
I like the way you have broken this down. I wish you luck, you ALMOST have me convinced to switch races hehe
|
Yeah ZvZ is a matchup you just gotta understand. :o Once it kind of clicks you'll know how to win even after being behind.
|
Hahah, nice blogging Will come again.
|
@kNyTTyM, I am usually on from 2:00pm to 9:00pm, that is in Eastern. In between there is usually the best time to catch me.. or like right now lol
@kidd, I will convert! I suggested to my other friend that it's worth switching for a week just to realise some things about that race. I used to think Muta's were the shit ZvP until I realised the problems you can run into while using them. If I were to ever switch back (don't think that's a possibility though) I would know a lot more PvZ knowledge.
@Elric, Thanks man
@Slayer, thank fucking god. I can deal with that. I game like everyday.

How are you doing on Colosseum? I found out that somehow I have magical powers to win every game on that map despite the fact that I lose every game on every other map.
I am not even saying it is imba.. I don't really do things to take advantage of the imbalance. It is just magical and makes me win.
|
I haven't tried Colosseum, but your making one hell of a case for it.
I must have this magic you speak of!
|
hah nice read again, yeah you really shouldn't have gone for that bunker, especially the way he put it so it does not cover the raxes or the whole back of the base. And iccup should be called tosscup, tosses everywhere, gtfo fags !
|
I like reading your blogs.
|
lol i hate tvp, but recently i've been getting a lot more TvT's in the D/D+ levels with my smurf accounts, and there's been a lot of zergs on C-...
|
Thanks Xiberia.
Besiger, your totally right. When I watched it I laughed because I had a lot of other builds I could have damaged, but I went for that lol.
|
Dude keep writing these blogs. Three reasons:
1) Gives me something to do for a few minutes 2) Im switching to zerg and iccuping once I have enough time, so this is inspirational, and.... 3) Funny as hell

Beseiger/Salv. Very true, like half of the players are protoss. I guess its a double edged sword. If your bad against protoss your going to be taking a lot of frustrating beatings, but on the other hand you will learn the match up every which way eventually.
|
Yeah. Logically, I should be beating Protoss at the D level easily. I know Protoss (since I was one) and there are very many to practice versus, yet it is my hardest matchup atm.
|
Hahaha, great blog so far. "I slightly outnumber him." So good!
But I think you should really try to play way more defensively/economically. Zerg is THE race of macro routine, you'll have to get used to that. If your basics are good enough, you can spice up your style with some harassment.
PS: Please provide replays!
|
only one way to solve your zvp problem, switch to terran !
|
you promised it was going to be longer. its def. funny. HAHAHA NINJA SALV.
|
As a Terran player, I really recommend you to just make a lot of Zerglings instead of additional sunkens. Often, the Terran player doesn't pay any attention to his first small push and will just A-move his control group towards your natural. In this case, you can often flank him quite effectively and gain an advantage. I myself have been caught like this many times and it really helps Zerg to Mutalisk harass better. Further more, it helps vs certain cheese strategies, since you can do a lot more damage with the mobile Zerglings than with Sunkens. And if you hold his attack, your surviving Zerglings can join your retaliating forces.
|
Dude your blogs are awesome. =) I'm so tired of the typical "I'm blah blah blah this good" or "help with gurlz".
|
ZvZ also boggles my mind. Last game I played I felt ahead all game. I sniped a few of his ovies with my first muta (his popped a tiny bit later than mine), when he tried to get aggressive with his muta I snuck my lings into his base and ripped up a few drones. Proceeded to kill more drones with muta and forced him to cancel his expo. I still lost.
I have no idea how. It seems I kept losing more muta than him, but I never actually stuck around to fight him too long so I should have gained an economic advantage which should have eeked me ahead. But it didn't... hm. :>

Two hours ago I found myself waiting for your blogg post, wanted to get todays episode. Great work! I must say this was the best one so far, I "loled" alot .

as everyone else has said.... this is a very entertaining blog!! keep it up

@Raithed, I AM SORRY RAITHED! It was mildly longer though. Besides, I do one everyday, yeah? What do you want longer?
@d1v, thanks for the tips, especially the a-moving. I'l look out for that.
@Trooper, I will start to provide the replay of the recap game. That makes sense at least. I will provide other replays but I don't want to embaress Zergs worldwide
@kissblade, thanks. LOL at the help with girls, those blogs are all over this site haha
@Zer0das, ZvZ confuses me too. Take solace with me in the fact that Slayer said you get better with experience.
@NotSupporting, Haji, Rotodyne & zOula, thanks alot. Check back tommorrow :D

A general tip (which came to my mind after reading d1v's post): Some strategies are more or less effective according to the skill level of the players. For example, opening with lurkers instead of mutas in ZvT. If you're still at around iccup D level you should try this more often, I'm sure it'll be less risky than doing heavy muta micro. Bad Terrans are generally bad at microing their marines against lurks, and a nice lurk/ling flank can quickly decide the game in your favor because he'll lose far too many marines within seconds. Unfortunately, when you face better players (iccup C and above, I'd presume) you probably have to change that (you should then rely more on the common, "proven" strategies used in most pro games. Work on your mechanics to be able to pull these off decently). But against bad players, you can try several things and you might even have better results with an uncommon strategy/build. Find out what they're weak against and hit them with that. Hard. That ling ambush you did is also an example of something a pro would laugh at but which can be devastating against bad players.

Totally agree. That is why I try to play normal even if it means I will lose, for experience.
As an update, I have the perfect, PERFECT game to recap tomorrow. Hilarious game. So make sure you come check that out.

Loved the pics and the comments. Must, have, more.
