Alright, I turn to you in request of help. My gf's computer is wrecked (beyond repair, I'm afraid) and I'm supposed to buy a new one. Knowing that TL.net has it's fair share of it-specialists, I now ask you to help me compiling a new system. My gf would use her computer for surfing, chatting and occasionally some gaming, so it doesn't have to be a high-end machine, but something, which can handle Windows XP/Vista, MSN and SIMS 2 and so on.
Now, that's what I thought of, but I guess there are better alternatives:
Processor:
Intel CORE2DUO E4600
Mainboard:
ASUS P5N-E SLI, PCX, nForce650
RAM:
No idea, any suggestions?
Harddisk:
Well, use the old HD (if possible?)
What do you think? Is this compilation rubbish, or is it ok?
Thank you in advance!

The harddrive is the least durable, most vulnerable part of the machine, so you should really buy a new one

RAM: 2GB Harddisk: If you have enough space in there, just use the old HD.

Oh, I'm sorry, my bad. zdd, do you think this will be enough to run SIMS2 and similiar bs? And btw, the price is Swiss Francs, which are around 1:1 to USD, but normal salaries in Switzerland are averaging at like 4500 - 5000 USD, so no big deal with the price there.

Yeah that should be more than enough to run sims 2, everything else like chat, web browsing, etc should work perfectly too

Thank you all so far, I'll continue to look around and I'm always glad to hear some more suggestions.

I dont know about that celeron computer. Dual cores are so cheap these days it seems foolish not to get one.
d1v if you have the time you should start learning about building your own computer. Its always cheaper that way and you get to pick your parts. A good place to start is www.tomshardware.com.

I think your gf would be fine with 1gb of RAM. I've seen people still using 512mb lol
