Tactics and the SNES one (dark knight -> paladin, I forget the number) are tied for a close second for me. I thought FF9 had the best animated movies of the whole series and was a decent game on top of it... but I lent it to my GF before I finished it and never got it back... so I can't say much about the overall quality since I never saw the ending. I got a strong suspicion she only dated you for your Fantasies, dawg.

Haha I still have the game and those big poster maps and stuff in the back room. Of course they were my dads first, but I played it when I was around 6 or 7. I remember being SO close to the end but for some reason getting stuck and never finishing the game. Wanted to come back and try to finish it recently but the game doesnt work anymore T___T;; If I could find an emulator for that game I would be really happy. I'd definately prefer beating that game over any of the other ones 9 and up =/ They got so shitty T___T;

I can't stand PS FFs. After 6 I don't know what happened but I didn't like it. FF9 was "ok" simply because the combat/equipment/skill systems were a throwback to SNES jRPGs, which I liked, but the fucking characters were awful. I think FF6 is my favourite, but in terms of pure Nostalgia, it's got to be FF1 I've played the shit out of that game. I remember being like 8 and not understanding the concept of an RPG at all. Just wondering around dying over and over. Finally I started to learn the game, and I beat Garland. I crossed the King's bridge and I thought I beat the game. Fuck that screen is so epic with the characters silhouetted on the hill and the music playing and the hype introduction. I'm getting so nostalgic just thinking about it. Another nerdy story about FF1: In grade 9 or 10, we made the FF1 challenge: You would take the sum of your characters' levels when you beat Chaos (last boss) plus your "Characters' Score" and add them. Whoever had the lowest score was the winner. I can't remember the exact values of the Character Scores, but they were somthing like: Knight 20 Ninja 10 Master 12 Red Wizard 15 Black Wizard 10 White Wizard 8 Fighter 15 Thief 7 Black Belt 8 Red Mage 10 Black Mage 6 White Mage 5 So if your party was Knight x 3 / WWizard (best party in the game, shut the fuck up about your stupid ass red wizard, master or black wizard - they suck compared to this party) and you beat Chaos at level 20 (hard!) your score would be: 20 + 20 + 20 +8 + (20*4) = 68 + 80 = 148. Now compare that to what my friend did. He made it to Krakken (basically the third major boss in the game - there are four fiends total. After beating Krakken you have to beat one more castle and then you can go fight Chaos) using: Level 50 something Master Dead Level 1 White Wizard Dead Level 1 White Wizard Dead Level 1 White Wizard Assuming he could kill Chaos at level 75, his score would be: 12+8+8+8+75+1+1+1 = 114 After we found this out we all quit and restarted because even if he went to level 99 we would all lose. It's pretty much impossible to kill Chaos under level 20 anyways from what I've experienced. I tried to do it with a Thief/dead WMage x 3, but I got stuck at the... Earth cave? The cave above the cave that the Lich is in. I was like level 3 at this point ahahaha. I beat the Marsh Cave by running for like 5 hours, because I would pretty much die in one hit. Oh man such good times hahahaha.

I really didn't like the mechanics in that game (junction, draw magic). The music in 7 and 9 is spectacular, 7 also has an epic storyline. Tactics wins for awesome diversity though. You can change your party to however you like it and try cool unit combos. FF6 (3 US) I thought was pretty awesome because of the diversity of the characters too. And if you liked FF4 (2 US), you should try to find FF5. It wasn't originally released in the US, but Square-Enix eventually released it for PSX in "Final Fantasy Chronicles" which is a rerelease of FF% and FF6. Final Fantasy brings back some memories.

I thought characters maxed at lvl 50 in FF1? And the party I always used was Fighter, Black Belt, Black Mage, White Mage, but that's just because of the nostalgia since I used that party as a kid.

Likewise, I really didn't like 9. I find it to be the worst Final Fantasy ever. But yeah, you guys are silly. 4 Red Mages, was the best party on FF1 haha. (I just had to say it)

FF6 has always been horribly overrated. I would put FF2, FF7 over it, and FF8/FF10/FF5 in the same ball park. I really dont think FF6 was anything special....Kefka was a pussy ass villain (OH NOES HE POISIONED THE WATERS EVERYONE CRY)

This is only for PSX games, download emulators via google, just search 'playstation' emulators and the first or second list should have the best ones. I really recommend pSX v1.13 though.

I'd like to defend FF9 as an average PSX RPG, better than FF7 by a little and FF8 by a good margin. Although it has many flaws such as having a few broken supermoves (e.g. Limit Glove), weak characters, weak storyline, kind of pathetic nostalgic throwback references, and an abomination of a regular battle music, it did have some stronger points. The equipment/skill learning system required some tougher choices about what to keep equipping if you have weaker armor with a better skill (assuming you don't actually grind and learn the skill before moving on to the better equipment). Then the allocation of skill points also was nice, and gave some characters different flavors. Unlike FF7-8 where materia/junctions make all of the characters essentially the same, FF9 had a cast of reasonably balanced yet distinct characters you could mix and match for some somewhat interesting combinations. FF6 is not good for the story, what with the lame comic relief moments (e.g. Gau/Cyan), Kefka in general, and some of the other sequences like the opera house and feeding Cid. What's good is the wide cast of characters you can use that have so many different skillsets. If you let Gau learn a few useful rages, he becomes quite an interesting character to handle within the scheme of your party, being uncontrollable. Personally, I didn't like the Esper system too much, because although it allowed for some customization, it gave most all characters the large and powerful skillset of magic, which often trumped their innate abilities. (Why mess with moogle dances if you can use Ultima?) I think FF6 is the second-best showcase of the Active Time Battle system, of which I am a fan. In most games with ATB you can do nice tactical maneuvers like starting to cast a healing spell before you actually get hit or something fancy like jumping to avoid getting hit, but with FF6 there's more. Using Celes' Runic is quite interesting against many bosses, especially if you try to sneak some spells of your own in the downtime while absorbing the boss's spells. And that's not the only example. CT probably had the best usage of ATB because of the single-double-triple tech system. It forces you to make decisions about whether or not you want to wait for the 2nd character's turn to come up and choose a double tech instead of two single techs. The best part is how single techs do single-target healing, while you require a double tech to get in full-party healing. So you have to actually balance offense/defense if you have Chrono getting turns faster than Marle, and you're thinking about maybe Aura Wave. Chill, if you're never going to finish Lufia 2, the game's been beaten in 3:24, video here, so you can just watch the rest of the game. Plus this speedrun is super super amazing, one of the best I've ever seen. It solves the puzzles so awesomely, luck manipulates bosses, and pretty much pwns everything. Boss strategies are so optimized it's ridiculous.

I hate this argument. If you wanted cloud to be a dedicated white mage, you could do that. If you wanted someone to be a knight, you could do that. Just because a lot of people made boring fucking characters doesnt mean you were compelled to. If you want only one person to be a summoner, thats fine. And you know what? The game rewards you for doing that....A dedicated summoner will have low life and def, but the mag atk and def (which was broken lol) will be off the charts....A LOT of people made aeris the white mage/summoner type. That argument holds for ff8, but ff7, if you want roles, you only have to be creative. FF6 is not good for the story, what with the lame comic relief moments (e.g. Gau/Cyan), Kefka in general, and some of the other sequences like the opera house and feeding Cid. I think story is essential to an rpg I expect to play for 20+ hours... and FF6 didnt really have one. What's good is the wide cast of characters you can use that have so many different skillsets.
