So I spent last week in hospital suffering from kidney failure and I've been told I'm going to need dialysis in the hospital 3 times a week until I can get a transplant.

A few thoughts:

1: The NHS is amazing. The fact that I can turn up to hospital with a minor complaint and have them identify something important and then keep me there for a week while they plan a treatment -- for free -- is amazing. No-one should ever take it for granted, these places are staffed by amazing people, overworked and underpaid.

2: I'm going to have more time for hobbies but I also have to give up on any professional ambitions I had because I'm not going to be able to get a full time job until I have a transplant.

3: Everyone is treating me as though I'm dying but I feel fine to be honest.

4: The dietary restrictions for kidney patients are WEIRD. I can't have anything that's high in potassium, sodium or phosphates, so nutritious vegetables are out. Not being able to eat potatoes is heartbreaking but probably good in the long term hehe (I can eat an overboiled potato mush if I really want to but only without salt...).
I also get all the protein removed from my blood 3 times per week so I need food that's high in protein but low in mineral content, with no salt. This will take some adjusting to.

5: I now have a tube inserted into my chest, and the scar is going to be right on top of my only tattoo. Typical.


Now to attempt to negotiate the crippingly depressing UK benefits system...

Just out of curiosity, if you are comfortable answering, what was the minor complaint and how did on Earth did they identify kidney failure from that?

I had an itchy rash on my ankles that had been worsening for months so i went to the walk in center at the hospital for what I thought would be a 20 minute appointment and a prescription for cream or something.
They did a blood test as a precaution and the levels of EVERYTHING were out of whack.

Oh wow. Sorry to hear that. Dialysis is not something you wish on your worst enemy. Hope you get better and get that transplant sooner than later.

Fuck, I am now gonna freak out from every rash for years after I read this. This would seriously be an absolute nightmare for me, I have big respect to how well you seem to be taking it.

They managed to assess me on a solid 0/40 for needs upon discharge from psychiatric hospital where I’d been for a year, lovely system there

Weird I know someone who has the exact same problem as you. Started with the rash (alias purpura). Now he's on suppressants to stop his own antibodies from attacking his kidneys. Would interest me to know if there's a non-genetic cause.

Reminds me of when I got diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Hope that transplant comes. I'd donate mine but I'm barred because of the cancer. Can't even donate blood.

My late uncle had three kidney transplants over the course of his life and he managed to live through almost 30 years of dialysis. I believe you can do better Jock.

Damn, that fuckin' sucks. I really hope you get a transplant soon and that it goes well. Dialysis definitely sounds scary but I'm glad you're taking it well, that probably bodes well.

If I hadn't had training on coping with mental health issues I would be freaking out right now probably so that's good I guess...
At least I will have more time for mafia now
@TaardadAiel I don't actually know my blood type. Weird considering I need a transplant but I'm focusing on adjusting to my dialysis right now then once I'm settled I will start thinking about a transplant.
The medical staff seem to think I will go fairly high on the transplant list because I'm young compared to most renal patients.

Also thanks for TL+ fluidrone

I might do a blog about the experience of dialysis at some future date, just for informational purposes...

In essence it's this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IgA_nephropathy

Has multiple causes that can lead to it afaik, partly genetic, but genetics play a role in almost everything.

Caveat: There may be other causes I'm not aware of.

I have polycystic kidneys, so they grow cysts on them which causes them to lose function and become huge.
I was in a teaching hospital and apparently polycystic kidneys are a good teaching/testing exercise because I spent the whole week being prodded by junior doctors trying to guess the illness.
