Ever since the matchmaking algorithm change, I've been facing Koreans in 95% of my ladder games. That per se isn't an issue, but here's what frustrates me:
1) their ratings are all over the place
A large portion of them are doing placements so they don't even have a rating. A large portion of them have ridiculously low ratings (1500, 1600) but turn out to be extremely good. As a result, losing a game means you lose 20 points while winning gains you 5 points.
2) lag is fine for me, but they seem to hate it
The TR is typically 16 (Low) with Koreans, although occasionally it gets worse. I don't mind TR16 too much, but Koreans are used to TR24 so they start flaming, which again I don't mind. But last night, this Terran got so pissed he abused the stacking worker bug. For those who don't know, it's a bug in the game that allows you to stack all of your SCVs and stay stacked while attacking as if they were mutas. Imagine a 720 hp super SCV that does 60 damage. It's banned in tournaments but no one will enforce a ban on ladder.
I appreciate the lower wait times, but I think the threshold for TR should be higher (maybe TR20?).
For the ratings, I think newness should be taken into account. A new player may be a smurf who's actually 2500. Once they finish enough games, they will get a rating and have their opponents' ratings retroactively updated. It wouldn't fix the issue of a pro purposely throwing games or off-racing to get a lower rating though.

The rating I face are just demoralizing at this point. I'm a pretty bad player sitting at ~1600 and I almost never face an opponent that is less than 200 above me. usually losing to ~2000's. It's a nightmare, just getting constantly stomped.

That seems a reasonable suggestion to me on playing placement players one that would definitely help to some degree, surely couldn’t do any harm anyway.
Especially in a game that’s decades old, has a lot of veterans and is bloody difficult to play, you really have to cut out other ways any new player, or lower level player can get further demoralised.

I actually played some BW ladder yesterday at like 3 am. played 4 opponents I think, ranging from 800-1400mmr. I am 1200. So as far as rating goes I can't really say I have a problem with it.
Occasionally I'll get a B player that crushes me, but that's fine if it's every now and then.
+ I've played koreans and from europe there's not that much lag tbh.
Whoever has issues with the way things work or doesn't work 21 years down the longevety pipeline just has to sit down and accept the facts I think. No other good way to put it. It's not perfect, but we have to appreciate what we got.

was out all week on a business trip, been itching to play some BW again, and promptly lost to a 2000+ rating 400 APM random player and a 1600 rating 300 APM protoss (i've dropped from 1900 to 1800 since the matchmaking change)

i actually went up from 2050 to 2150 with the inclusions of the koreans. i think for those of us really committed to salvaging the foreigner reputation in the eyes of the whole community; this thing with the koreans adding to our ladder has improved our opportunity to enhance our reputation

my rating hasn't changed but I feel like I find good, more varied opponents faster, and I really appreciate the change.

If I play west coast daytime, I get all non krs and hit 1970s. If I play in the evening or latenight I get all koreans and stay between 1770 and 1825.
I enjoy the fix and since I dont read korean, I dont care what they have to say.
Also, Koreans regularly use the stack cheat to get up my ramp pvz. How did blizzard not fix that jn remastered. That is wack.

yeah no doubt the ladder is a lot harder. I guess it doesn't affect others as much but most of my games are laggy now so I don't play starcraft nearly as much as I used to (which is probably for the better lol).

i hop on every now and then and I run into a lot of the same. It can be fun but usually if I don't put them away inside of 15 ultimately they hammer me because they're just a lot better

I had a protoss do the probe stack glitch on me in ladder. I caught it early on and just made a sunken in my main while I attacked his main with my zerglings. Laughed the entire time while my economy grew and his probe stack shrunk.

Just keep on grinding Stryker. These anomalies will always exist, but if you're reasonably getting TR16 on the east coast, just think of the benefits of this whole situation. The benefits far outweigh some anomalies that everyone will inevitably face. Faster queue times, more quality opponents, etc.
My experience is that when its TR16 Low, the Koreans never say anything. It's almost that they are accepting of it. So I've not experienced any outbursts. Yes, in some rare games that it does drop to TR14 or TR12 (and that's been very rare), they do some BM... but it is what it is. It's in a small percentage of my games, so I don't really care. Overall, the TR16 is a blessing and seems to not really cause much concern. I probably get TR16 in 80% of games, TR 20 in 15% of games, and then the remaining 5% are the ones where it's like TR14-12 and still playable (but yes, some complaints here)
Also, some of these 1600 Koreans that you find are monsters... It's just that even at those lower levels, Koreans have a very strong understanding of some 1 BO timing for instance. Whereas foreigners at 1600 don't have that strong of a grasp on that 1 BO which can win games.
Anyways, my advice is just keep on grinding, if you get flamed a few times or some unenjoyable games, just leave and start over. Who cares about the points and stuff... just practice and enjoy. Overall, the entire ladder will balance accordingly.
What I mean is - if you find that 1600-1700 is very hard, maybe you are, in fact, a 1700 player (and no insult in saying this). Perhaps the prior ladder without us getting paired to koreans was slightly skewed and actually inflated our MMRs. Think of it in this perspective... all of it will soon be normalized.

Hey dude,
Saw you got back over 1900! Congratulations. You have put in the work. Good Job dude

Overall I do like the changes. Gets higher quality games against good opponents. Inconsistent elo ratings are a small price to pay. Maybe I'll do a "road to BSL" blog series.

Even the worst Korean is still hella good. I uninstalled the game after getting stomped a few times on ladder because I knew I didn't have the time to get good at the game.

Yeah, I remember that you were very good when I used to watch your stream from MIT. You crushed me recently so you should have no problem getting 2200 or even 2300. If Koreans start spamming you in Korean you can always remind them you're from the USA and that you can't read anything they're attempting to contact you. It's to their disadvantage to spam you incessantly over the course of the game so if they're really upset it'll only get worse. Just wish them the best GL and try to win according to your own pace.

Never let a Korean who is spamming chat know you are American. They will do the most abusive shit possible. It is like a green light to abuse mechanics. Remember when that pro gamer cried after losing to Tossgirl?
Like that ... but worse. Unless you want them to play their very best, meanest - then by all means follow his advice and enjoy the tsunami of pain headed your way.

What was your ID? I don't recall playing "linestein".

Someone good enough that if you beat them... you must be able to hit 2200 or 2300 ....
Congrats on cracking 2000 by the way. Keep going dude. The heart you are putting into this really makes up for the fact that I seemed to have settled between 1850-1900 with no real hope of improvement =)

Thanks. I think I got lucky the past few days. I wonder how things will look towards the last week when everyone's trying to cram in their games. I'm thinking 2100 should be good for Gosu league.
