I used to listen to it with my now dead best friend, Brendan. It was a pretty specific version of the track, and it was one of 'our' songs. I'm not sure of either of us had even played the game. Instead, we just tended to like a lot of one another's songs. It was pretty good.
Tonight I spent the last few hours trying to track down that specific version. The tricky thing was that MIDIs sound completely different depending on what computer they're played on, so everything sounds different on my modern machine.
Eventually I decided that it was probably a version called 'another-world-3-' (not to be confused with 'another world (3)'), and next I had to find out how to make it sound like what I was used to.
People have made a variety of 'SoundFonts' that orchestrate MIDI files in different ways. Notably, you guys might remember the optional Yahama MIDI selection if you played the original FF7 for the PC.
Anyway, it's cool because you get to listen to your favourite songs being rendered slightly (or vastly) differently for each of the 20+ SoundFonts you try out with them :3
After many hours, I came across some SoundFonts that are designed to mimic old hardware, and ended up with something super close to my old file. You can see how different it is to my previous version, below, and to the game's original (?) version, further below. Mission complete!
