It's been almost three years since Brood War first showed signs of life outside of most Blizzard interference. It has done well, having had leagues that have managed to sustain professional play, and former professionals turning to streamers. In addition, its largest personalities have been able to cultivate enough attention for media and sponsorship to appear for an individual professional league. All it needs is to sustain itself, and judging from viewership online and offline, it's nearly assured that it can sustain itself like the older projections about Warcraft 3 in China from the discussion that was had before.

It has also been a good thing for SC2 that it has not faltered completely. With two expansions having passed, and a scene that has experienced a shock similar to the sAviOr controversy, it's shown that SC2 has been at a point where most of its interest derives from a foreign audience. Local audiences remain at a subdued number, but not at the empty stadia that greeted its earlier expansions. At this point, SC2 does rely completely on Blizzard for long-term individual tournament sustenance and pressure for ProLeague sponsor companies to remain there. The question is how long they will have to keep being present, or if this will all collapse if Blizzard decides to pull out.

The harder it becomes, the more you should focus on the basics.

Jup here's to brood war! I crave for a complete recovery. I've always been a wc3 fan boy but BW is just the best game ever.

It's foreseeable that Blizz can pull out due to the success of OW in Korea so far. The Kt GiGa event is a BW and OW showmatch event whereas the previous was BW and SC2 iirc.

Viewership-wise, BW is pretty okay. The challenge is getting newer amateurs to play the game and hope some make the leap to competitive or even pro play.

Hopefully this means SC2 will go back where it belongs at least, which is no where.

Blizzard is the party who could make the most meaningful steps towards revitalizing BW, by way of patches, cross-promotion on Battle.net and hosting tournaments at blizzcon.

As for the community? Watch, play, make content surrounding the game (video, streaming, articles etc.) and lobby organizations to host events. I'm really hoping shield battery takes off, that would be a much needed first step.

Would be nice to have big events like dreamhack also having a bw tournament.

Dedicated contributors and more foreign content can go a long way. Getting sponsor money will really help with that. I'm so close to landing sponsor money, but its very hard

I think that SC2 is proof that you can't "buy" an esport. You have to have a spontaneous/organic community interest, a game who's complexity supports long term development, and a proscene that is competitive, driven, and differentiated by skill.

edit; I mean, how do you get a kid to play Baseball? That game is old as heck! The answer is found in the community that supports it.

That doesn't make sense at all. SC2 is not proof of anything. The WCS system exists for foreign gamers in SC2 and has the funding from Blizzard. The Brood War community is 20 years strong, but there simply aren't tournaments and a WCS to make the game seem more enticing for those new players to be attracted to the game enough to reach a high skill level.

I am with you in this one, you need money, because BW is an old game, it has the community (In Korea) but it doesnt have the money anywhere. SC2 is the contrary, has the money but not the community (In Korea).

IIRC there were offline qualifiers for the ongoing ASL league. Obviously all of the people that qualified are known players who were former pros, but I'm curious as to if there was a lot of new blood in the qualifiers. It would be interesting to know the average age and how many unknown players there were that made it decently far, if any. Maybe someone knowledgeable with the Korean scene has some info on this?

I'm very much not talking about balance patches, more along the lines of improving compatibility, networking, battle.net or the map editor.

Well, they start playing Baseball because of friends, familiy , whatever but they keep playing because they dream of fame, money, ....

I get the basic idea that you're trying to convey, and I agree. Blizzard just kept throwing money at SC2 to make it an esport, but it really suffered in terms of gameplay. Hard to maintain a scene when you keep hemorrhaging players/fans who hate the gameplay.

In any case, what Brood War desperately needs is money. Had Blizzard supported Brood War even half as well as they did with SC2, there's a possibility BW might even be the more popular game already (I think it will become the more popular game as we move into the future).

Other than that, the Brood War community lacks a lot of foreign content. From what I've noticed in my extraordinarily short time in the BW community the past few weeks is that there is a pretty active community who love watching this game and reading articles/viewing content. Unfortunately, it seems like there just aren't a ton of English-speaking content creators out there. In other games, you have a plethora of people who do highlight reels, funny videos, editorials, streamers, etc. I would love to help there .

There are plenty of games that have been able to "buy" an esport. Your game is limited to its own popularity though.

I get why you would think BW is going to get more popular, but outside of Korea? That doesn't seem realistic at all. I think a lot of people enjoy watching it and reading, and discussing Brood War, but it doesn't seem there's actually many people playing the game in the West. And thats why there's no content creation, the Western playerbase doesn't seem to be there.

I think the ideas above for crowdfunding are kinda silly, but if Blizzard really wants to earn points, they should help get Starcraft on OGN. I assume they already write checks to OGN for HOTS and Hearthstone, what's one more? As much as as we talk about the resurgence of Brood War, there's still tons of problems with getting sponsors for tournaments.
