It may just be me being pessimistic, but the amount of Dota talent coming from the UK is awful. We have about 3 pro players, all on mediocre teams, and have barely any casters or personalities. Its time that UK Dota stood up and showed everyone that they are just as good as the rest of the world, and that we deserve a chance to prove it. Maybe we would if anyone brought a tournament our way once in a while. The closest we can get to a tournament without spending ££££s is ESL Frankfurt or The Frankfurt Major, and even then we have to spend hundreds of pounds on travel. The UK is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, so holding even an ESL tournament in London would attract a large crowd. Its not like we are bad at eSports, we have CS:GO and LoL tournaments held here annualy and British teams get good funding due to it. But even the UK based Dota teams dont even look for UK players, e.g. London Conspiracy is a UK eSports organization and has UK players for all its eSports teams bar one. Guess which one. You guessed it. Dota 2. The previous LC squad was all Greek, and the current squad is a Danish ans Swedish mix. Maybe the team would win once in a while if they looked closer to home for their talent. The UK Dota players may be recognised by the larger organisations if there were any local LAN events held, but the closest one ive found is a LAN in Edinburgh that has a prize pool of £100 and some keyboards. It would cost me £100 to get to Edinburgh, let alone cost of accomodation and food. Also, we need more talent in the casting section too. I mean, its obvious we are good at it, in the space of 2-4 months ODPixel went from being a small time caster for a few StarLadder games to the knockout casting sensation of TI5 and a founding member of Moonduck Studios. But has this done anything to make the world give us a chance? NO! Has anyone thought of trying to raise the profile of UK eSports? NO! Wasnt there a 5k Lan 2 days ago which some random ass beesa+rime+3 stack won ? There are like ~20 6k+ players from the UK and that is simply not enough for a big scene. I feel like console gaming is a lot more prevalent in the UK and PC, especially DOTA is just not popular enough for a bigger scene.
Korea was in a similar position as the UK, not many known players and not a huge following. Valve tried to boost the popularity with Nexon by hosting multiple Leagues/Tournaments and guess what, after 2 1/2 years Dota is still dead in Korea.

UK dota doesn't seem that bad. I mean, at least you have good casters and the i52 lan (or whatever its name is). You can't really go further without more tier1 capable players.
It's not only the UK, most of the EU dota pros (not counting CIS teams) are from Germany+Scandinavia and it's pretty much it.

I never noticed a lack of UK players. But now that you mention it, I remember a lot more UK players in sc2 than I do in dota. Which is odd because dota is so much more popular. Someone talk demuslim into switching to dota.

its actually a good question why there is a lack of talent. i dont think you cant do too much about it. its just random. for example look at mind-control form liquid. he is very talented and stuff and comes from bulgaria. what has bulgaria that britain doesnt in terms of dota and gaming? i cant see a difference between those countries.
unless you want to build camps where you imprison talented kids and force them to become the best, like with future olympic winners in china, you cant do much about it.

I don't really see what the problem is. There aren't good UK players so the UK doesn't have any pros. There just isn't much of a competitive Dota scene for a bunch of different cultural reasons.
It doesn't seem to me like there are any particular barriers for British players to overcome. EU visas, relatively affluent, passable internet, all speak the language of Western Dota... not seeing much to complain about. If a British player wants to get good, he can. If he doesn't, oh well. I really don't get what you're talking about with LANs. You don't get good by attending LANs, you get good by playing a bunch and being spotted. Miracle didn't win Frankfurt Major by going to local LANs, did he?
You say British Dota needs to "stand up and show we're just as good as the rest of the world", but the fact is we're not just as good. That's the whole point. All that can change that is players who decide to actually get good.

UK dota is just bad. There are realistically 2 7k players, and like 4 high 6k players (Chances of becoming pro players), a few of them have already been knocked back from the pro scene for mentality (Being toxic), the others haven't had a chance but tbh just aren't good enough. 'Rime_' played standin for a few teams like last year/the year before, the UK had a pro player in dota 1, but other than that, nada.
UK is much bigger anything outside of the player side of things, we have 2 high level organisations (London Conspiracy and Fnatic), a few well known casters (the meme incarnate OD Pixel) and a few managers are UK (Cyborg Matt, manager of Secret).
The root of it is just that the UK players ain't good enough to play competitive dota. In the western (EU) scene as well, it's less about where you are from, and more can you match with the players at the top and will you make a significant impact into a team. There is no point for pro teams to switch out between a gu who will only be a small bit better in terms of skill, to lose a strong synergy.
In terms of lans:
We have an annual in Edinburgh for enough to cover the bus ride home, Insomnia 3 times a year for £5000, epic.lan 3 times a year for i think £1000, there are pub stomps in every major city for TI/majors (leeds, sheffield, london, nottingham, manc, edinburugh).
Also, the players have already switched to LoL or smite. 4Head

Are you sure it is just a uk dota 2 problem, or not a general uk esports problem? I'm not up to date when it comes to other esport scenes, but when I was still following wc3 and sc2 (I think also cs, but less sure here), I remember the number of competitive players from the uk was always way behind what it should have benn compared to other countries of western europe. The only one I can remember was demuslim.

i have a feeling that the UK went into COD and league but anyone who was old enough to skip those and go into dota is also too old to be good at dota (ie they have jobs)

it's impossible to improve a lot when you have the mindset that you are already good.
I don't know what causes the terrible mindset amongst lots of the higher UK dota players, maybe it's big fish small pond syndrome, not sure. But with it can literally never be great at the game.
also people tend to adapt to their environment, if everyone you play with has a shitty attitude and mindset you will drift that way as well.
So anybody who might have a chance at being actually really good, if they start trying ti play uk lans and using uk teams for experience then get dragged down by the toxicity.
(My experience may just be biased by the people ive bumped into from uk playing at mid 5k several months ago (dont do ranked anymore)...fairly small sample size though)

The problem is very few people in the UK who play games will ever consider playing dota as a job and are normally pretty circumspect that they even play games. It's not very socially acceptable to play PC games in the UK, even console gaming is tolerated only in small amounts in my experience.
