For the past few years since WoL release I've been trying, to no avail, to enjoy laddering sc2, but I can't seem to be able to, not because of the stress, not because of the 1v1 factor, or because it's a complicated game.

I don't understand how anyone can play this game, lose, and not feel like the biggest retard on Earth. Mistake here, mistake there, mistakes everywhere, you could have won that game, Jasper, how could you make such silly mistakes?. Queue for another game, lose again you fuckin' idiot, you keep playing so badly game after game.. Watch the replay, notice even more mistakes.

And in the 50% of the other games I play I win...... I feel nothing. I play the most intense TvZ of my life and win.. ok... watch the replay, I was being outplayed hard at every single corner, a shitty engagement just swung the game in my favor and allowed me to stabilize. Play another game, 5rax reaper to calm down my mind, straight up BO win.

Sad thing is I can't play things people call chill and mind relieving like LoL/Dota to cause the same shit happens to me there TT

so obviously the problem is with your preferences. Don't play these types of games then.

Do something less competitive for fun like art, reading or cycling or something

That is why I love playing 4v4 and 3v3 , its pure fun and no one gives a fuck !

This is my personal preference , in my opinion this is why sc2 fucking kicks ass , there is something for everyone , some people find the challenge and everything you said fun....others like myself who just want to chill and have a good time have their own options as well.

As for other games, I really think it boils down to how you feel, I have been playing wc3 since 2003, love 1v1 , its as intense as sc2 1v1 but for some reason it just rolled with me and I like playing it , if deep down you just don't enjoy the game or mode you are playing, switch over and find something you do.

Another example is Heroes of Newerth, ever since it came out I never broke the 1600 mmr (legacy player here), lost the motivation to keep playing Caldivar , so I switched over to Mid wars and other custom maps , and I'm having the time of my life ! people wanna call me a noob for doing this ? FUCK THEM ! let them have their competition , I'll enjoy my time here.

Take that attitude to sc2 , simple.......or else you're just gonna have to tough it out and get better, which is not a bad idea if you got the time and balls to do it.

LOL, I've been blacklisted from several guilds in MMOs for blackout drunk healing. It's great up until a point and then you just kind of pass out at the keyboard

Sounds like a mindset issue. You need to look at mistakes as an opportunity to grow, not as a failure on your part. Try to take a 1-2+ week break, and when you come back focus on improving at only one thing at a time, only moving on to the next thing once you've become competent or frustrated at the first.

edit: Honestly fixing mindset is super hard and varies based on the individual, what I outlined is just what works best for me.

I just do builds that I find fun. It's not fun every time, but when I put my opponent into a position where he cannot win, I find that enjoyable.

Honestly, I'm in the exact same boat.

I was actually thinking about why I don't have fun at Starcraft anymore, and I think the answer is this:

In the WoL Beta, I was a bronzie zerg who "fast-expanded" every game and went straight to mutalisks. It was *fun*. Before the beta ended I got #1 in my division by basically having fun. After the game was released, I decided to try and get decent at the game.

That, my friend, was my fatal flaw. As soon as I decided to get even mediocre at this game, it stopped being a game. I even made a thread way, way back about how SC is more a science than a game.

That being said, I made it to Plat in under 280 games, which is a remarkably small sample size considering a lot of people have thousands of games in silver and bronze. But I can almost guarantee you they're having more fun than I am.

So anyway, I was thinking about this and thought, "Maybe I should just go back to having fun instead of trying to be good." But honestly, I don't know how to undo the compete button. I'm very hyper-competitive and this game makes me rage, so...

I don't know, maybe the answer is to simply switch races. Or change up your goals in-game. Day9 had a great weekly where he talked about what I dub "micro goals," wherein you focus on one particular aspect of the game. Like, this game I'm going to focus on spreading creep. Shit like that.

Or, since Blizzard is omnipotent, you can focus on leveling your profile and not giving a fuck about ranks.

And since this game is like riding a bike, you don't really ever "go back to being a noob." Unfortunately, the fun part of SC is over for people like you and I. Now I like focusing on co-op, campaign, tournaments, and troll builds. Also, unranked can be okay.

But yeah, when it comes to Starcraft, it literally sucks to suck.
If you can't jam with the best, then you have to slam with the rest.

Hm I have fun because I like knowing that I outplayed my opponent. I have always been a hyper competitive player not only in games but sports as well.

Making mistakes sucks, but it's something to improve on. It's why I get bored of casual games very fast as there isn't much to do. Battlefield for example is fun, but after awhile it's like eh no ranking system (competitive ranking system), no real depth in skill anyway.

Give me a game like starcraft, age of empires, csgo, etc and I can play those games forever. If somehow I made it to be the best player by far (no one could beat me anymore) either because the game died or whatever I would stop playing (unless there was money involved :p).
When I think of something else, something will go here

Yeah this is a mindset problem, I'm in a similar boat. SC2 is so intricate that's it's child's play to find mistakes everywhere if you don't focus a particular area at a time. If you have perfection in mind when playing this game you're going to be having a bad time.

When I switch to Hearthstone or Dota 2 though I feel too much is out of my hands and it still frustrates me.
I think esports is pretty nice.

Yeah at least SC2 is a game where you have control over how things go. When playing dota 2 you are so dependent on how your teammates play it's like every game is a roll of the dice.

I was going to say something smarmy like you should play tic tac toe because then you can figure out how to play perfectly every time, but that's not really the issue and it's not really your mind set either. SC2 is a game of endless optimization, where the largest gains come from the microscopic boosts in efficiency. Chrono boost at exactly this time, send your units at exactly this time, at this much supply do this. There isn't a lot of room for creativity, so when you do win you feel like you were merely adequate. Other games you can play very imperfectly and realise there was a more efficient way to do everything you did, but if you feel like you had an insight on the game your opponent didn't, or you somehow played with their brain to make them react the way you wanted them to, you can get immense pleasure from that. Maybe that's not really SC2, but the way you approach the game, because actually I'm certain there are creative players in SC2 who just like to mess with their opponents, it's just not something that travels up the ladder as fast.

Why don't you try to win games (ie. Try to have a good winrate as long as possible) instead of going with the flow?
If you play the game at sufficient level it won't be about "mistakes mistakes" in replay but "oh shit he multitasks too much" in the actual game. These games are very nice to lose.

I feel you, Mobas aren't my thing either. Also i'm pretty sure my LoL account is ban for some reason.

For sc2 I get these times were I have to take a break. The game just starts to wear on me, so i switch to diff. games (TF2 for Ex.) till I want to play again.

However, what does it for me is the fact that my MMR is so fucked up (Hots). After not playing for 6 months (no internet) I laddered, placed into bronze, and started to work back up. Next match was against a diamond player. lost. Another diamond player, lost again. Etc. Took me three weeks to start being able to be on par with them.

Watched replays, always fun to watch replays IMO. I can just yell at myself and my mistakes.

I find more fun in 2v2s, 3v3s, and 4v4s then ladder. Heck, a 1v1 against a friend is better then ladder.

Also arcade and Co-op is good for just causal play.

What I find really interesting is how hard people try to like a game that infuriates them so much. With almost anything else you would immediately drop it. I.e. if you eat a slice of rhubarb pie and you dislike it, you don't keep eating it in an attempt to get used to the flavour.

Its true that it could be a mindset error, and maybe when you learn to be less self-critical while playing you will enjoy the game. If that is the case, I would give it a serious attempt, and if its not working move on to something else.

On one hand you say you're not 'satisfied' by any other game, on the other hand this game is not 'fun' to you and you berate yourself constantly. It seems a bit contradictory; I think you should probably just drop the game and try something else.

Don't remind me about my childhood of being force to eat rhubarb pie like foods.

Try keep cottage cheese in your mouth for 20 secs and then being told to sallow it. Then repeating the process for a month until they realized you don't like cottage cheese.

But good point regarding the question of the OP.

I also think 2v2 and 3v3 are more fun because of its casual nature. 1v1 often feels like a showground where you HAVE to show how good you are rather than play with the same casual mindset as with team games
