All my life I've been the kind of person who enjoys finding something, forgetting everything else and pouring my life and soul into it. The interests have lasted from 3 days to 7 year long periods. A good example would be Starcraft 2. I spent 2 years playing it, and though I still watch tournaments I just can't bring myself to play it more than 1-2 games at a time no matter how hard I try.
Now this blog isn't about sc2 exclusively. It's about every single project I've ever started. From drawing to learning an instrument.
There comes a point in time where suddenly the activity that brings me so much joy day in and day out becomes absolutely repulsive. After that I feel absolutely lost and without any interest for much up to months at a time until I find the new thing to fill the void. Now something that has been with me my entire life has been video games. Lately I've found it impossible to keep playing for more than 20 minutes at a time unless I have a friend to play it with. It was a kind of a lifeboat, like a girl you'd keep as a backup if your relationship craps out. Which brings me to my latest obsession, League of legends.
Now before you judge me, It had been over half a year since I had found anything that interested me much, and playing it with my friends was more fun that I had had in a long time. That died out months ago however and we only occasionally play a game or two every month.
To come to the present I feel absolutely lost. Games have always been something I could fall back on, when the next project dies out. Now I find myself blankly surfing websites like teamliquid without any interest in anything, just to kill the time.
Something just hit me today while I was sitting outside enjoying a beer in the setting sun. There were these children playing on a trampoline being really noisy and such, and I remembered how I used to do that with my friends so many years ago. This was when I started my first long project. Its been over 10 years now. Yet with all these projects coming and going I have never actually achieved anything, had anything to show for it.
And now no matter how hard I try, I just can't find that spark. With it being the summer holidays and all, I just find myself doing absolutely nothing day in and day out. No studies to distract me, nothing to do. In the old days I would get so excited by summer, because I could spend every single waking minute working towards some goal.
You read about those people who have a passion for something, and it lasts for decades. Great artists, professional players, you name it. I love having that passion in my life, and just feel lost and hopeless without it. Maybe I just haven't found that one passion yet, but the days tick by. There comes a certain point when dreams aren't achievable anymore. All I want to do is not to feel lost anymore.
Enough rambling, perhaps I should just start going outside more.

I'm not sure if this will be a consolation or not, but I am similar in that I can't maintain a passion indefinitely. I get really into something for a while, and then lose interest or don't want to do it anymore. This has been true for computer games, sports, hobbies, etc. I'm not sure what to do about it.

I suffer from this as well. You worded it, and made it sound nicer as I would always call it apathy or procrastination, which make me look like a lazy fuck

i feel the same, atm im kinda forcing myself to play sc2, i only keep playng because of my friends...
dunno, it feels like life lacks meaning when you cant accomplish anything...

That's a rather common feeling for most people, there's nothing to worry about really. I got the same for Brood War / Snooker / other "related" hobbies every now and then. That's usually after an overdose, e.g. game marathons, realizing how shitty my cueing got, or whenever I spent 150€++ on concerts within two months. Just take a break and come back later. If you really are into something you come back sooner or later.

Same here ^^ Although for me it's partly an escape strategy, too. Whenever I feel pressured to do something I don't quite like, I happen to stumple upon a new project. This one mostly eats up so much time, that I have ample "excuse" to not do the unliked thing.
Two months ago, it was exam's time and I found khanacademy.org. I almost grinded 1,000,000 points in one month before getting a hold of myself and start studying for real.
My other problem is that I'm very bad at motivating myself (without external factors). So far there is only one thing I consider valuable where I pursued something on my own: Go - even reached 1-dan there but then stopped, too (more or less).
A lot of other things are motivated through a couple of social reasons. I started Shogi recently because professional Shogi-players are holding an event in my town and friends of mine, who organised this, are afraid that there won't be enough people attending to honour them. I started to learn to play the guitar so I could jam with my girlfriend. I started to code because two of my closest friends are very good programmers, though I also dreamt of finally making my own games (did this with the RPG Maker 2000 a lifetime ago). The above khanacademy.org I found because a friend studies math and I always find it really interesting when he talks about it. Also COSMOS was pretty big around that time. And I watched The Big Bang Theory a lot =D . . .
In the end it's like you said, maybe I have not found THE ONE passion, yet. Or it is in front of my eyes the whole time but I just look pass it over and over again.
Maybe my passion is to be passionate ; )

Same here. I have always had my games. For a couple of years now i curse that there just aren't any good games at the moment, but i realized it was me not enjoying games so much anymore. I do play 1 day a week, compared to playing everyday after work and skipping Saturday night sleep so i could have more time to play. In my case i think that with years (i'm 31) i am not feeling games so serious anymore. I still have the passion for a project but games can't justify them selves anymore. The next project should be something in real life. Just have to find it.

Im kinda similar but not, i can play games alone but i can't play games alone for big marathon sittings anymore. However, if it was with friends, like playing CIV 5 with 2/3 others or playing SC2 3vs3 or even just 2v2s i can play that for a hours. Mainly FIFA i can play too with friends. But i just like playing with others. Even on WoW i can raid with people on the same boring fight for ages because i have so many people to talk to (25man raiding so you have 26+ people) thats what i enjoy about gaming lately.
Hell even when SC2 tournaments and LR threads are entertaining for me xD
But i can understand the points you make and eventually it will happen, hopefully not though and some reignites your passion :D

I'm happy to see that I'm not the only person in the world with this problem. I lost my interest in games some time ago, focused on my studies quite succesfully, and now I am a bit lost. Right now my passion is dancing, but you can only do so much of it before your body tells you to stop. And then what?
I realize now that I am actually quite unhappy with my life. While other people keep themselves busy with menial tasks and hanging in front of the tv, I am sitting there with the burning desire to work towards some goal, but without an actual goal. Before the summer, I would fill this void somewhat by hanging with friends, but it also made me realize that I do not have many friends, and now many of them are away on vacation anyways.
What to do, what to do...

The best activities are those that give you a sustainable challenge, measurable progress and reasonable success rates. These are for example:
- Mountaineering:
What is the highest mountain you have been on? - I can give you a higher one. That one was too easy? - I can give you a tougher one.
- Endurance Sports:
In case you don't have mountains nearby, cycling or running is the way to go. Every man should finish a marathon in his life at least once, so this one is a no-brainer.
- Chess:
The knowledge required to become good at chess is so ridiculously vast that most people spend their whole lives learning this game. The Elo rating is also a nice measure of your success.
- Completing lists:
Instead of wasting time on TV and internet, make a challenge out of it.
- Play all the best video games of all time:

Freud to the rescue: You either never learned how passion creates rewards or more likely the work-reward chain got broken by forces beyond your controll. You are older now, you got more controll, try again.
Gaming probably went from a recreational thing to slight addiction, this is a very healthy reaction from your brain to see that there are no rewards for this "fun work" called gaming. You need to learn to split your time, If the going gets tough, the tough get going. Get tough and rediscover gaming as a recreational activity, not an activity to be social with or earn placebo achivements. This means stay away from any competitiv and multiplayer games for a while. Try some good indi titles like FEZ or Super Meat boy, use no guides, rediscover the joy of exploring within gaming. Restrict gaming to a few hours in the evening, while going through the tough parts of a thing you want to get good at, look forward to the reward in the evening.
All tips without warranty. :p

Same for me! I used to be hooked on world of warcraft for 3-4 years in which i put so much into. And now i can't find anything that's had the same effect on me. Even new MMO's doesn't bring the same burning feeling of accomplishing the tasks i faced in world of warcraft and other games. I'm semi hooked on hearthstone but it's merely a relaxed fun thinking kind of game. It's weird but i can relate to this. Over the last years i've completed good old single player games again. When i was 15-16 i could play counter strike source for endless, that's not the same with csgo even tho i still love to play it.

The reason I wrote this blog was to vent a little, because for me it is a rather frustrating feeling when you're in that middle section. Especially when it happens to hit into summertime, as this is usually the time I have too many Irons in the fire, yet now I have none.

I quite feel the same way about them, I can pick one up every now and then and play but not for long. I've been playing them since I was 2 years old and we got our first nes. Now being 21, I feel like I'm getting sick of em to the limit. In the last couple of years I've only been able to really play multiplayer games and now even those less and less. Chess is something I've been interested to try though, perhaps I should give that a try. As for mountaneering, not really doable with a students budjet, as for sports. Once again you can only do so much before your body says: "No more!"

:p Food for thought.

My poison was Runescape, I used to love to compete against my fellow clanmembers in that game when it came to skilling and such. And later on, Starcraft of course. Sadly my friends don't really play it anymore and have moved onto cs, dota, lol and so on.

Its normal to like something then find something new.
Though if nothing is fun and all you do is surf tabs or channels go see a therapist you might be feeling a bit of acute depression which depending on the level of apathy could get worse.
Personal experience - apathy to everything is bad.

I think the learning just starts to slow down. When you first play a game everything is new. You learn much faster and things are exciting.
Some people react more strongly to this than others.

Some people react more strongly to this than others. This is story with all things in life, and why everything from perfecting a craft to everything else people want to be great at is so hard. There is the build up, but the plateaus are no fun.

I want to call it commitment. You have a problem with commitment. I do too. But it's something that has to be developed like anything else. If there's something important to you enough to spend so much time on it, years even, and you don't reach the area where you want to be with that thing, then it's time to make sacrifices. It's fun to learn new things, but when you can just drop it when it starts to cool off, new things can become a bit stale just because they're new things. This is the time (or before this) when you can block out time to focus on something you want to do, but aren't necessarily feeling passionate about. Eventually you might get joy out of being really good at it, but you have to put the hours in to get to that point.
If you believe in the 10,000 hour principle, that's really a huge amount of time. I mean absolutely HUGE. Considering that you could spend almost 3 years with something for 10 hours a day to reach 10,000 hours... (or 30 years with an hour a day?) it's a bit discouraging. But I think when you get to a certain point, maybe halfway or a little further, you start to get some pretty big results from it that can make you feel even better about putting the time in.
Another thing I'll mention is our emotions can just do their own thing a lot of the time. So if you're not feeling inspired to do something then it could just be your body "going through themotions" as it were.
If you're not feeling much, can't cry, etc then work on getting back in touch with your emotions. One thing I like to do is play games and react to them. So playing scary games and shouting, telling your probes they need to mine faster, acting lessons, laughing at tv shows or comedians, these are all good things I can personally say help with the lack of emotion thing. If you can't feel anything then you can't really love anything either. That's another thing that kills commitment.

This blog is pretty sad because I've been in that state for several years now. Around the time SCII got released, I was already losing interest in a lot of games and SCII seems to have accelerated that. Eventually, I lost all interest in the upcoming year and don't play much games at this point. I even lost my passion for SCII as mentioned in my 10k blog.
Only thing that I play now is some BW with TL members and in DRTL. Too bad, I remember the days when I used to spend the whole summer just playing game after game and then move onto the next one or just play one game to death for 2 months. I guess it's true that growing up does seem to have that effect. These days I watch more anime than play games since those are entertaining but who knows how long that passion will last

If you want to get good at league, I've played for more than 3.5 years now and I'm only gold. There's an infinite amount to learn but you don't need to learn all of it to be good. It's a lot of fun still. You can join us in TL Lol GD. I wish TL did more events together or my friends still played though.
