Hey TL,
I am pretty unknown guy around TL, but I just wanted to type something out to organise my feelings about this.
A little about me, im a 26yr old Chinese, living in Singapore. I have a Diploma in Chemical Engineering from Singapore Polytechnic, I've been working for the past 2+years in my current job as a Laboratory Analyst(Fuel/Diesel/Transformer) in a Powerplant. Currently pursuing a degree in Finance(part time) at a local university.
You know how the oil that you burn for electricity needs to be tested to ensure it conforms to Environmental standards? Yeah im the guy doing the tests.
Right now the fear of the unknown is gripping my heart, yet I know it's the right thing to do. I need to take the first step out of my comfort zone and find something else that I can do and will like.
Background I took chemical engineering back then as I did pretty well for my Olevels, yet I didn't want to go to Junior College(JCs). I thought it would be a interesting subject and that it will be a stable job market because there will always be demand for technicians in Singapore, due to us having Jurong Island It turned out that I really did not like that subject at all, but i wasn't allowed to quit/change because of parental pressure. After graduation(and NS), i took a job at a lab in my current company in Jurong Island. Apparently the diploma is pretty useless in the world, there's literally only 1 single thing that i used from my diploma in my work, that's how to read Density Temperature to a table.
Why did I quit The pay was decent, but I just can't stand it anymore. There's a senior analyst(female, 60, 2years to retirement) that I am working "under"(im supposed to work alongside her). Because of her long years of experience(40+years), she has a attitude that it's always her way or the highway. Due to her age, she has slight memory loss whereby she will do things and then accuse me"why did you do it!" etc etc. I actually lost my temper 3 times at her. 1) She accused me of doing something that I didn't. She was the one who did it, but she keep saying I did, I did not want to shoulder the blame for that issue so I wouldn't back down.
2) I am fat. I fully admit it. For over a year, she always nags/insuinate at me that I am fat, that I shouldnt eat etc. Finally she crossed the line, she actually googled starving african childen photos and sent them to my email. I got pissed, told her straight to her face that this is none of her business. I am not her child, I am not her grandchildren, I am a adult that is only a colleague and that she should mind her own business. She told me "she was doing it for my own good(god i hate that argument) and that fine, she wouldn't speak of it anymore"
3) The 3rd time was just last week. 3 weeks ago, my lab engineer has tasked me to write 2 WI(work instructions, basically SOPs) for 2 new tests that we've started to do. The email specifically states that I am to write the WI, pass it to the senior analyst to double confirm, and then send it to the engineer. I did my part, however she refused to check through, instead she said "why are you always depending on me! Can't you just read the method yourself! I do not want to help you do it! Its your business dont come and get me involved." I was pretty non-plussed, so I double checked and handed it in. Now, 2 weeks later, early in the morning when we just started work, she came to my cubicle and told me "Mithhaike, you've made some mistakes in the WI. So obvious mistakes you also can make! Were you even paying attention or did you even read the method!" My response was basically, alright, thanks, I will go and check it again. She walked out of my cubicle. Barely 2 mins later, she walked in and threatened me "Mithhaike, you better damn well make sure you change the errors, or im going straight to the boss and feedback."
Wow I was so pissed. How dare she threaten me, she was the one who didn't want to go through in the first place! Now 2weeks later, you found some mistakes and now you have a chance to make me look incompetent, and your threatening me?! I called her out on it. Asked her straight to the face, are you threatening me, that she didnt check in the first place despite having an email(black n white) that states she should check through.
She later started calling me an ingrate, how in chinese culture, once a teacher, forever a father(proverb directly translated) etc. Later on she went to our boss, the lab engineer. The lab engineer came by to talk to me, trying to teach me how to coexist with that surly unpleasant senior analyst.
All those are fine. What happened next was the final straw. After 2days, the lab engineer asked me to file the WI. I was shocked to see the senior analyst name as the author of the WI. It's the equalivant of an editor changing 1/2words, and claiming that entire piece as her credit.
Apparently the senior analyst is so important to the company, that they always sided with her. Previously I brought it(unfair work arrangement n situation) up, my lab engineer and department head just told me "oh she about to retire, let her be", to which i responded, "She about to retire, so what? Work is work. She can retire, I too can quit right now". The manager tried to soothe things over by telling me how he didn't mean it that way, that this job has more value to me than to her, as she's about to retire.
Conclusion I am tired of being the one doing majority of the work, while she bosses me around. I am tired of being treated like a 2nd class citizen, being nagged at every single day or the past 2+years. I am tired of treated unfairly, because of how her experience means she is basically untouchable. Everytime i feedback, my bosses response were the same. Give in to her. her character is like that, so just take it. Now it's to the point of having my work credit being stolen with permission of the higher ups? Especially when it's something that i've just had an argument with that Senior Analyst with?
I'm done being unappreciated.
I've just tendered my resignation, and gave notice around 3hrs ago(now its my lunch break). Despite the fact that I have no jobs lined up right now, i feel it's the only thing to do that will make me happier. I dont want to be unhappy anymore.
It's time to move on.
Anyone has job offers(lobangs!)?

lol, she took credit for the WI? I would've stabbed her :p

Damn... I cannot believe the kind of condition you were being forced to work in. I think you made the right call. You deserve to work in a place where the higher-ups care about you and actually give a damn about how you feel.

How would you have liked the job if she wasn't there? Would it be bearable, enjoyable, somewhere in between? It's a shame to leave a job solely because of one person.

Well, good luck in the future. That does sound like an awful job :/

Wow what a horrible lady. Who the fuck googles starving African children, wtf

I think you've done the right thing. I also quit my job a few months ago for somewhat similar reasons, and while I still haven't found a new job that I love yet, I still think I made the right decision and that eventually I will find a place with great people to work with. To me it's not about the work itself, I'm pretty easy going and work well under pressure, but if I have to work with people that are annoying I hate it.

I didn't solely leave the job because of her, she does play a huge part, but it's also how my management handle things
I've overheard her saying how she keeps things to herself inorder to have an edge over me, so that she can keep her job(to another colleague), albeit in a joking manner. She's always right to the management because they want to keep her to run the lab, as she's very experienced. Worse part is that she keeps some stuff to herself. I no longer ask her any questions whatsoever because her response is standard....read the method yourself. She just doesn't want to teach.
What irks me off is how the management instead of solving that issue, so that perhaps i can take over her position when she retires in 2years, only know how to keep giving me advice on how to interact/communicate/work with her. All of the advice basically amounts to shut up and take it, but nicely spoken of course.
It's really demoralising when you get ragged on everyday, for over 2+years. I have began to doubt myself on my work too because of her. She has the uncanny ability to find things to rag on everyday, anything from where I place some papers, or to how the area is dusty and how lazy i am for not cleaning up etc. She is REALLY amazing at that.
I feel respect must be mutual, and earned. Right now it only goes 1-way, and it's really tiring for me.
Thanks for your support guys, appreciate it. I know deep in my heart this is the right way, but I still have the fear of the unknown. This is my first job after I came out of NS.

Well I hate to be the dick here but good luck finding a job that doesn't have someone exactly like her. There are always those people in every company I've ever worked in. Hope all goes well but in my experience it doesn't. You get a change of scenery for a while, you feel good, life is great. Then something happens and you realize that you are in the exact same place you were in before only this time you've burned bridges and it's even harder to find a different job.
|
Should have made her have an 'accident'.
|
Good for you!
No point working like this under someone like that, and you can't be expected to just sit there and be shat on. Go take a look at other jobs. Some will have people like her, but they'll be more manageable and hopefully you'll find a way to cope since you haven't right now. And if you're really lucky you might find one that doesn't have people like her.
But make sure you don't lose focus of what you love to do. No old lady is going to stand in your way if you REALLY wanted that job, right?
|
Haha I would blow a fuse if I had to take that...
Good luck on the job hunt! Hope you find something better!
|
I think finance field would be pretty horrible too. take care
|
It sounds like you made the right call, props for having the bravery! The management are shooting themselves in the foot keeping such a person around. What's the point of experience if you aren't going to use it to teach the younger employees.
|
Holy shit her behavior would almost constitute criminal harassment where I work. I'm so sorry you experienced this, friend. I wish you the best of luck finding a new job.

Even if that does turn out to be true, there are some things people just need to learn for themselves.
And sometimes you can find a job that's good enough that you can deal with the douchebags that come with it.

Interesting that Chemical Engineering in Singapore seems so shitty. Up here, Engineering - especially Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical are practically the most valuable science-based degrees you can do. Very professional work environment, from what I heard, nothing anything close to resembling what you've mentioned. Odd.
|
That is some really tough shit, and while I'm in no position to tell you whether it was the right decision, I think that it was a very good decision to make, or as good as any tough decision you'll make in life will get. But yes, keep in mind that you can have horrible bosses/superiors all over the place, and that in finance it could be particularly tough at first. Best of luck man.

Things work differently in other countries. In this case, he's a Chinese person working in Singapore. Things work differently in Asia than what most US citizens would be familiar with. And he did attempt to work through the process that is in place where he worked - and it didn't work for him.

Welcome to capitalism 101.
I'm done being unappreciated.
Really? If anyone would be treated fairly there would be no rich people around.
If you would pay someone what he generates, there would be no profit.
You just quit a very secure job, you might find a job where they tread you more nicely, but sooner or later you will realise as long as you work for someone else, someone else will be appreciated (get rich) for it.

The thing is, it was too blatantly in my face. It construed as a insult to me, and my work. My lab engineer even asked ME to file the WI. I did not asked to be paid what i generate btw, your taking things to the extreme. Fair in my situation is just ensuring I get credit for the work I do, instead of it going to someone else. That's not something extreme that I am asking for.
When your being ragged on every single day, no matter how strong you are, you will be whittled down. I realised that I have become a very angry person and that I am losing confidence in myself as a direct result. I dont want to become that bitter of a person.
Anyway, I know what your saying is true, all of it, thats why i posted this to organise my thoughts and to encourage myself to step out of my comfort zone. If I want to change my situation, I need to take the first step and go out.
Job security isn't a big issue to me to be honest, right now im young, well educated and im in Singapore, like I said, there's always openings for Technicians to run plants and do shift work thanks to the existence of Jurong Island(wiki it). There's definitely work to be found, unlike other countries who may be facing unemployment issues. I do not fear being unable to get a job.
However I dont want to be unhappy. Staying in this situation is not going to make me happy. Hope that lets you understand my current mindset.

I would say that one of my failings as a person is my relative inability to deal well with people like that senior analyst. I would probably have gone off on her much harder than you did, and I commend your ability to stay cool when in collaboration with someone who is well and truly a bitch. I'm fortunate to hold a job where literally everyone I work with is fantastic and nice, but I know the feeling of being in a position where you can't help but work with somebody you can't stand.
The pragmatist in me is scolding you for giving up a stable job, but the idealist part of me is cheering you on and wishing you success in future endeavors.

Feel you, friend. Take it easy.
For our foreign friends, Singapore is a country where you just have to take shit. If you get shit at work, you have to suck it up. No union, no strike, etc, none of these will help you. Last time we had a strike, everyone was fired and sent back to their home country.
dont worry mate you'll be fine.

I find this very funny for some reason... I can't exactly comprehend why she is doing this. It feels like you are taking life too seriously for some reason though. You should lighten up and see every other human being as reflections of yourself.

Ìf you get constantly mistreated at your workplace and you try to bring it up to no avail, you do the right thing by quitting. Nobody can thrive in such atmosphere. I can only advise to reflect on your time at this workplace, figure out if there is anything you could have done different or how you could have avoided this kind of a situation, and move on with your head high up to what the future may hold. Best of luck man.

hm, sounds like the management is taking the very Chinese approach of "respect your elders," which wasn't very helpful for you :/
I feel like that'd be less likely to happen in a Western setting haha

Lol, I worked with the shittiest people at my job that are 1000x worse than this for a year for far less pay than this. I would say patience and self discipline are virtues you need to work on. I don't think your boss was saying 'give into her', probably more like 'We all know she's stupid/bitch. Just ignore it and be the bigger man.'

No. Don't apply Western thinking to the situation. His boss was specifically saying, "Give in to her." She's the elder, the lead, and also probably not Chinese.
It's something that you don't see here. But something that can happen there - the culture is very different.

Im a Singaporean Chinese. In Singapore, this kind of harassment is usually not reported/sued. Basically you cant prove your case in other words. There was only 1case recently that was successfully pursued, let me leave the case here.
http://sg.news.yahoo.com/video-of-man-hitting-worker-in-office-goes-viral-043238636.html http://therealsingapore.com/content/slapping-video-victims-family-demanding-100k-compensation
This is how Singapore working society is like. This man(29years old) is paid less than a intern at SGD$500 a month(around $200 USD) and isn't given any benefits or leave, for 3 years. His case was only discovered when another intern working there took a video of that supervisor slapping him, and thus can be prosecuted.
This is a extreme case I agree, but the core issues is there. You do not speak up to your boss. You are expected to take harassment and abuse quietly most of the time. As for harassment case? It doesn't work in Singapore unless you have solid and irrefutable proof, like that video. In my case, it's better for me to walk away, and not burn my bridges.

A couple of years ago I worked in a door factory. The entirety of my job was to take different sizes of cut wood off of a very slow moving conveyor belt and stack them on a cart beside me. I literally did not have to change my body position the entire day. To top it off my immediate supervisor would come and scream at me almost daily. She was a miserable hate filled woman, and she would make fun of practically everything about me. My choice of clothes, zits on my face, my weight, my glasses, my work ethic, basically anything she thought would get a rise out of me.
After about a week of it, I went to my head boss and I explained the situation to him. His response? "She's been here thirty years and we can find someone to replace you in a couple of days".
That night I started printing off resumes and looking for other jobs. But I could never find one that fit into my schedule and paid as well as this one did. So I sucked it up. I had goals that I seriously wanted to obtain. I wanted to attend university and I wanted to travel to Japan. So I kept my mouth shut, I sucked it up, and I vented to my friends on the weekends. And eight months later I quit, having finally saved enough money to do what I wanted to do.
The point is man, there's always going to be shit that's going to make your life unpleasant. That doesn't mean you have to live in it, but you do have to learn to deal with it.

That's the thing though - you assessed your own situation and realized there was no better alternative so you sucked it up and trucked on. OP sounds pretty optimistic about other career opportunities. You should only suck it up when you really have to.

There are always those people in every company I've ever worked in. Hope all goes well but in my experience it doesn't. You get a change of scenery for a while, you feel good, life is great. Then something happens and you realize that you are in the exact same place you were in before only this time you've burned bridges and it's even harder to find a different job.
This is false. There are normally douchebags on every workplace ofcourse but what the OP describes is extreme. She is not just being a dick, she is putting a clamper on his development and career while making his 8 hours misserable.
To the OP: What about recommendations from that place? Working at a place for two years then showing up at your next place of employment doesn't look too good if you have no recommendations. So is there anyone that works there which you can use in your next job interview?
Other then this, don't worry about it. You have a degree and two years of experience, so finding something shouldn't be too difficult, the first job is always the hardest.

Up here, Engineering - especially Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical are practically the most valuable science-based degrees you can do. Very professional work environment, from what I heard, nothing anything close to resembling what you've mentioned. Odd.
Well, over here in asia, there is a huge emphasis placed on the young obeying/blindly respecting the old. If you're the younger person, tradition dictates that you must listen to your older colleagues, even if both parties are equally ranked or peers. The OP is 26, his senior analyst is 60, which is probably why his boss told him to suck it up. The workplace in asia is waaaaaaaaaaay different compared to the West. You suck up every abuse/harassment your boss throws at you and are expected to stay quiet. (The age thing is just my speculation. I'm pretty sure Singapore is culturally more western than most asian countries)
