Nice I have I think 12k in debt (just finished school as well). I don't have to start making payments for another 4-5 months and am not looking forward to it. I can't wait to get mine paid off and I haven't even started paying it back yet

Yeah I've been paying monthly payments of like $88/month or something (base payment of $25, rest is interest I think? maybe got that wrong), so feels great to not have that interest gutting me.

After laser eye surgery and vacation I'll be saving up for a nice down payment on a house. Assuming I get approved for a mortgage that is

Those payments are ridiculously low, imo. My friend monthy bills (3 total) add up over $500 for student loans.

A handful of my tuition was paid for out of my own money, not using student loans, and i only went to school for 3 years, so I think my debt was maybe just lower and that's why?

Yep, it's not a big deal but I would enjoy it. Aside from the extra handsomeness factor it's a pain when you're swimming, staying at a friends place, you lose/drop them, have to wear a mask or another set of glasses on top (i.e paintball, 3D movies, etc). Yeah... a bit annoying sometimes . And it lasts for nearly forever too, so it's kind of a 1 time deal.

How bad are your eyes? Mine are like –8.75 in the right and worse in the left (they've probably gotten worse since I last checked). Just wondering because for me my glasses are actually getting really heavy and it's become a real problem lol, beside the fact that, you know, nearsightedness sucks.

Nice job finishing your loans in less than 5 years.

In terms of eye glasses, contacts, etc. You might be interested in this: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50149025n

Yea, I think some people in this thread would have a heart attack if I mentioned how much student debt I have...

Good thing I'll get the Navy to pay for damn near ALL of it! Gotta love where our taxpayer dollars are going in this country....

But seriously, fuck education in this country. I'm sending my kids abroad for college in 25 years. Grats on paying off the student loans! I can't wait to have that feeling myself.

Oh man you guys are so fucked with student loans =/. In our system you also build up a loan but when you graduate in an x ( not sure how many ) years it becomes a gift from the state.

Last time I got them checked they were both about -4.75 and have since gotten worse. Haven't had my prescription updated in about 4 years.

500/month on college loans seems suuper high but maybe I just have not heard enough stories to know of many undergrads with that high monthly payments

I only had to pay like 10% of the 55k/yr tuition which was legit but I also had to get a loan since I wasn't working a job while in school, which I could have. I just started to have to pay $60/month on a kinda small loan. It's kind of nice actually because it is establishing credit for me in a chill way. I don't have to hassle with having a credit card in order to build up a credit score from scratch. I'm going to avoid getting a credit card until I absolutely must have one, which I don't expect to happen unless I'm just still a little bit naive. I know credit cards can be used very responsibly but they still seem like a hassle to me.

if you're paying things with debit card instead of credit card, using a credit card is much better for the security alone

A lot of (private) loans don't let you pay with credit card, though these days I think there is probably a paypal or similar workaround. Though loan interest is deductable!

it's not that hard to contest fraudulent charges on a credit card and you don't lose any money while doing so

it can be much harder to contest fraudulent charges on a debit card and money is removed from your bank account when the fraudulent charges take place. the bank may or may not take a while to eventually restore that money back into your account.
