I can't stand it. How does people keep jobs or get through life without taking action to fix something?
I'm currently unemployed looking for IT tech jobs and got contacted by a recruitment agency a week ago that seemed very eager to get me for a job, asking how soon i was available and what i could think of doing. Cool i thought, she said she just had to contact the company to check when the position was available. Here's the not acting part that bothers me.
I try to get in touch with her for about a week, leave a few vociemails and what not but i don´t want to be too intrusive. Today i get a hold of her and naturally i ask where we stand.
Me: So we talked a week ago, where do we stand now? Her: Well i don´t know, i sent an e-mail a week ago and i'm waiting for them to get back to me.
.... just, really? You get a bonus if you get me a job - and this is how you do it? You sent one e-mail, a week ago, and you are waiting for a response? Just call them?
Me: Well, can´t you just... call them? I had the impression this would be a fast thing? They wanted somebody now? Her: Well yes i guess i could do that. Me: And the interview? Her: oh i guess yes we could do that tomorrow, if you´re free.
Like... i have to remind her to do her job?
Same thing a few days ago, big shoe store shopping for sandals for my toddler.
Me: Do you have these in anymore sizes? Employee: No they ran out pretty quickly Me: Well are you getting any more of them anytime soon? Employee: I don´t know. Me: Can you check? Employee: Uhm i don´t really know how.. Me: Well you must have someone that's in charge of purchases? Decides what you guys order? Contact him i he's working? Employee: Oh yeah that works
She contacts whoever is in charge of kids shoes, i get an answer.
Like this happened in every group assignment in college aswell - problem arises, how do we solve it? 9/10 people just stare into the wall going "I dunno".
This all really boils down to me being bitter about not having a job atm, bugs the hell out of me when i see someone who just fails at theirs because they can´t be proactive or whatever you might call it.

How many years have you been working in IT? I guess I should also ask which headhunting firm we're talking about as well to give me a better idea of the situation.

Produce monotonous jobs, form obidient slaves... People just smart enough to hand you pommes, but not smart enough to question the system cannot be proactive. You can't have your pie and eat it.

People are pretty stupid, as a general rule. What I realized by going through college is that people can complain about certain degrees not getting you any jobs and other degrees being good at getting you jobs, but that only matters for the incompetent individuals you talk about. Any motivated, competent person can get a job with an English degree, and they can probably do it faster than an incompetent bum with a science degree.

I don't think it's about work competence, I think it's about social competence. If you have friends who can give you a job, you're pretty much golden no matter what field you're interested in. If you rub people the wrong way, or you just have difficulty forming relationships with other people (you're civil, but don't really enjoy socializing), it doesn't really matter how hard you work you're gonna have a lot of trouble getting a job and once you get that job moving anywhere within it. To me, this explains far better why there are people who are very bad at their jobs but find and keep them easily, and why a lot of people who work hard find themselves frustrated that they aren't given much a of a chance to prove it. Of course there are people who work hard and are also social too, at those people can move up very quickly indeed. I think the social aspect is by far the more significant factor tho.

Here it is, life lesson incoming. The truth is: stupid or not, these people don't give a shit about you, and possibly their job as well. just be assertive and stay polite like you have been. If you want to work in a shoe store and be the best god damn shoe salesman on the planet go right the fuck ahead. But don't expect anyone else to have that dream.

if you work in an established job agency, you are set. In Prague (which has a huge expat community working in various tech support centers of big corps that are located there), they get three months salary if the contract is signed, and a fat bonus if you stay in the job for at least a year.
I found my job there via an agency, and the effort to payout ratio was insane: The lady sent me one email, asking if I was interested in a different job than the one I had actually applied for, arranged a phone interview and afterwards relayed one email from me to them. One hour tops, for that she (or her agency) got several thousand dollars.
Under those conditions, I would not work my arse of either.

But guess what, some people just wanna look at pies. They want to watch pies. And they gonna take the pie out of you if they want another look at it, but your body will have already started to digest, transforming it into an abombination, some grotesk slimy pile of cells and feces. And because they lack the wisdom to know that you are supposed to eat pies, not look at them, they leave you looking at that disgusting, distorted image of the raped and tortured beauty that once was your pie.

From my experience this is too true. The hardest working guy at my work is constantly shat on by everyone else and called lazy, etc. because he is not popular. The laziest guy is also the most popular and never gets in shit despite literally standing leaning on a shovel most of the time.
People are eager to criticize those they don't like, but most will never criticize a friend.

Yep...
The recruiter probably decided the bonus of getting you a job is not worth the extra effort she'd have to put in.
The shoe salesperson just really didn't care about you.

Shit, you just seem like an enormous arrogant dick that won't ever be at the top of other people's long, long priority lists.
In both cases, you need something from those people more than the other way around. Behave that way and people will probably put some more effort into you.
Fun you're complaining about people not taking action, while they both have a job and you don't.

You know its funny, because I read this blog and was going to comment that he should get used to it, because as a rule, people I run into do not, or cannot do their job at a satisfactory level. Then I read this comment, and I'm blown away by the feeling that people are simply this incompetent. "I have a job, therefore, why should I perform it to a satisfactory level for my customer?"
It is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves, and it is a daily experience. Unfortunately, it has become more of the rule than it is the exception where people just seem like they cannot think for themselves in performing their job assignments. I have run into people every day where I feel like I need to lead them just like you mentioned in order to get their job done.
Sadly, I have to say that you need to get used to it OP. I'm not sure why I see this level of laziness, incompetence, or maybe they are just dumb. But I run into it everyday. When I do find someone performing their job function at a satisfactory level I usually let them know. I'll give a server a $20 tip on a $10 meal if they were a great waiter, because I want to reward people who do their job well. But sadly, I don't find this all too often.

No surprise you're having so little positive experiences. To be honest, I meet people every day who do their job with passion and try to provide the best possible service - in fact, I rarely encounter the opposite. I guess that's what you folk get for presuming that you're so much better (yea, your posts tend to imply that) and that they do a shit job to start with.
Your negative experiences are purely the result of you feeling you're entitled to a certain degree of service and your lack of understanding that for most people their daily job is hell. If you lot walk in with your attitude... hell, why would they deliver more than they're paid for?
I'm also not entirely sure why you're calling me incompetent (that's how it looks anyway) given your complete inability to understand social interaction...
Stop being so damn haughty and people will treat you better. While you're at it, stop thinking you can buy friendliness and rather say thank you once in a while.

If you are a customer at their store you are entitled to a certain level of service.
