Had the above piece on display for the artist showcase late last month, I didn't win, but I didn't expect to anyway. Was a decent event. Lot of free food and people around to mingle with even though I was on like 30+ hours of no sleep. I sold the joker/king bicycle painting. The girl who won really digged my stuff and wanted to trade or something, I gave her my card but I didn't get hers. doh.
I recently stumbled upon some graff subforums on reddit and called some guy out on biting style and being a braggart and a battle ensued. I didn't really even care but I figured it would be decent practice anyway. Here is the thread with crits etc: http://www.reddit.com/r/graffhelp/comments/1tvdyk/spore_vs_marulie_beef_battle_results/ admittedly it wasn't my best and I sort of rushed it. We both were to do the word 'Trash'.

I also started putting ads on craigslist in LA and OC and got a few people interested in random stuff. Some of them are just retarded, and others seem serious, but I'm waiting to heard back from them since xmas break is over now.
oh and here is a pic of me at my table during the artist showcase:

Have been working on a few ideas/paintings. And finally got around to doing a free hat for my sister. I dunno why, maybe because she is my sis, that I redesigned her hat/letters so many times before I decided on this basic style. I have a couple of more jokers I have planned. Finished this one, came out pretty good. Having trouble with the other's sizing for some reason when I try and sketch it out. Frustrating. Also got commissioned for another hat from my favorite TL user and repeat customer. Thanks, Artem. Will post that up when I'm done. Pics:
Kaboom - pro bono
12x9 Creep Joker - sold 40$
12x9 Translucent SpoR
The hat I had previously painting all white with acrylics so the color didn't fill in clean. I might go back and try and fill it up later, some of my markers are dying so it makes it tedious.
I actually used a paint brush to outline a lot of the joker piece, I really hate paintbrush for doing line work. It's so much slower, sloppier, and frustrating. Just poured too much paint in the palette and was trying to use it up lol.
The last piece was a style I've created and used a few other times, I really like it and other people have liked it as well. I originally put a bunch of abstract colors and shapes on the white canvas and left it for use at a later date when I figure out something to work with it (as I do with most of my canvas), and I tried originally to do a large tag on it (those are the green/black lines you can see within in). It was ok, but I felt like going over it. And I might go over it again, and again, to give it that graffiti wall messy feel. I don't really like the unused white space on canvases for some reason. Always feel unfinished to me.

Friend hit me up to do some live painting at a bar a couple cities over. The guy who invited us said he wants us to come back every Tuesday, and then on the first Saturday of each month for the Artwalk (been trying to get into this Artwalk for a while). Some chick seemed pretty interested in the monster face stuff, and said how it would be perfect between some other paintings she had once she had 50$ and I gave her my card. I started this painting based off an old drawing I had since he hit me up last minute to go. It actually turned out pretty good, prob one of my favorites tbh.
12x16 SpoR - Brix
I also got commissioned for another hat which I will update later.
edit- in hindsight, some of the 3D seems off.
edit2 Feb, 11 2014- So we came back yesterday and did some more painting. This time I brought lighting and an easel (I generally dislike using them as I've always done artwork in a very hunched in tight way, it's kinda weird. Anyway, I also borrowed some paintbrush and the easel (I found in my garage) had all this oil paint inside it's cubby thing. So I filled the letters with oil paint, but I forgot that oil paint takes forever to dry so I was struggling to paint around the oil with my acrylic markers and getting paint on my jeans and hands. I'm like 90% done with it, but I'm gonna fuck with it more once the oil is dry and post it up later this week.
Anyway the promoter told us we should paint out on the street next time (at least one of us) and hooked up some tickets to some reggae show at the House of Blues in Anaheim (I actually hate reggae, but it's a tool for a date to get laid). Got a couple of free beers again and there seemed to be a lot more people this time. Definitely more people interested in our works and grabbing business cards ( which reminds me, I gotta get some more printed up). Some drunk dude borrowed a pencil and shit and decided to start drawing on some stickers or something, he may or may not have stolen one of my dozens of black sharpies, idgaf. And today I realized that I am missing a painting and I think I have been missing it since like October/November (I tend to bring all my shit around to different events). I looked all around the house and it's pretty big so I don't see it being anywhere unless I accidentally covered it when I was cleaning the garage. So either I left it on the street or something during an artwalk, or someone jacked it when I was packing/unpacking and I didn't even notice for months lol. Sucks. (btw, the missing one is the first one from July 18, 2013)
I also was talking to some girl on reddit about setting up a website and getting on itsy, wix, pinterest and all these social media blog type things to get more professional and get more work. She said she paid like 80$ a year for her site, and that honestly seems too high a percentage of the art income at this point. I will look into all the free shit and continue to invest time etc instead.
Oh and if you wanna check out Michael Age's stuff (my friend, we both are named Mike) he does more people/realism drawings like Glider does. He also does, or at least used to do, a lot of demon/zombie/monster/angel gothic kinda stuff. He's really good, this is not even close to his best stuff: http://artid.com/members/michaelageart

Since my last entry I have done a couple live art shows at bars. And I think one other random Tuesday thing, I dunno we skipped the last 2 weeks, but we did those other things. The first show was like a last minute thing, some chick on facebook was saying this bar (2nd Floor) needed a couple of artists for their weekly Thursday event (my friend Mike also ran into my ex and she said they needed artists that week. I msg'd the guy (who also is involved with the HB Artwalk, and I have met him before but he didn't seem to remember) and then showed him my newly created /SpoRGraffiti and also my friend's album of sketches. He called me up, we set it up and he made a quick flyer.
+ Show Spoiler [Bar descriptions] + 2nd Floor is an art themed upstairs bar. Mostly tattoo and trendy/rockabilly type art I guess. It's a decent spot though, pretty diverse crowd and music/DJ, ofc it blows up on the weekends because it's downtown Huntington Beach. It's got some 3$ beers all the time too, which isn't bad. The Copper Door is like a speakeasy underground bar in Santa Ana. It's got a stage and a ton of craft beers on tap. They play all kinds of music and regularly host events and shows there. They also have a couple pool tables with an unusual $8/hr rental fee instead of the usual pay per play style. Both bars are somewhat dimly lit, but aren't really dive bars. Somewhat Ironic that one is upstairs and one is downstairs.
So at the event, they also have some ' create your own ' thing where you draw on a pic and they post it up on the wall and winner gets a free meal or something. I immediately started one haha. Later the bartender girls were trying to figure out what it said, and eventually the cute one/our waitress came over and had to ask me to break down the letters. She/they had it mostly correct, but my P was bent into a sort of E shape and the R was crazy so I think she said like S-E-O-? or something like that. After that I was working on the painting that I had sketched out from an old sticker (that I never posted up because I liked it too much). And mike was working hard on his same couple of oil paintings he has been working on for the last couple of weeks (some female figures). The best part about this event is that they hook you up. Anything we wanna eat or drink, all on the house. We didn't really take advantage of it though, and just ordered a giant (like 5 lbs) plate of carne asada nachos with all the works on it and maybe a couple of drinks throughout the night. Some guy came with a camera and took a bunch of pics and we did short 'who we are' video descriptions. It was kinda lame and neither of us was prepared so they probably came out badly. The other main guy took a couple pics of us with our paintings. I'm really terrible at pictures (I call myself reverse photogenic), I think I need to learn to tell some joke or something just before photos because they always look so bad. The crappy thing about the rushed event is that it was also a rainy day Thursday and people just weren't out. I think maybe like 2 dozen people came and went throughout the entire 4 hours or so. Either way, we got setup to do another even for April and that will be promoted better etc.
Speaking of that guy, I'm invited back to the HB Artwalk this year and I'll be doing that probably monthly again all year. I really need to get a better table (but they are like 80$ at Walmart).
Oh yea, and one of my new paintings got smashed in the door of the van when I was rushing to get into 2nd Floor because shitty family reasons. I might be able to repair it though, it's not too bad.
As far as the Santa Ana Artwalk (at The Copper Door), it works a little different than the HB one. It's a much larger area and most of the displays are within studios or art buildings, not just on the streets. The promoter had us setup outside under the awning shared with the adjacent restaurant where some girl&guy were selling old records. It was a tight space and I didn't have enough tables or places to put art (I have like 30 pieces or something absurd) so I was just putting it all over the place where ever I could. It was a rainy night, but it was a Saturday so it was quite busy. Honestly think it would have been better inside though (even though people on the street wouldn't see at all). I was mainly finishing up my painting from the other event 3 days prior as I couldn't really see well enough or have enough space to sketch out my next painting. So after I finished I sorta stood around and talked to promoter and some other DnB DJs who were scheduled for sets later that night. We both were sorta not feeling it anyway, and we boned out at like 10p when the artwalk is scheduled to end. I sorta leaned on the wall and just observed people looking at my art and pointing out stuff and taking cards etc instead of trying to engage them as I normally do, just to eavesdrop more. There was one girl from out of town (who may or may not have been on something) who seemed super interested, took a pic with me, and chatted a bit. She was with some dude, so I didn't bother hitting on her, even though she seemed to be hitting on me.
Then the most beautiful, dopest girl I know (who also isn't very photogenic) hit me up to be her rolldawg (I guess this is the new not-really-friend-zone-but-not-bf-term) and we have a fun but funky night where we lost our phones and she had massive blister on her foot from her heels. I finally got the phones back though 4 days later. I was writing out the whole story but I don't think it's relevant here, I was seriously considering to quit drinking entirely because of it.
Anyway, I'm working on that hat that needs to be delivered next week and here are my most recent works (I didn't outline the letters with black on either of these like I normally do, and I might add some more stuff to them later.):
SpoR - Water 16x12
SpoR - Sucker 11x14
Sorry for shit camera.
PS- I also got a number of hits from CL ad, to spray paint in their bldg but the people seem flakey or shitty. I am sketchy on doing these kinds of things because people are very unspecific and it's hard to give prices etc. I also found a couple of gigs looking for artists or artwork for their event/venue but one of them was misleading (had to pay like 120$ to show 8 pieces) and the other I dunno yet. Aside from that, I have been helping out and driving for my mom's old music teacher friend and we are helping her clean out and move out of her apt (which is pretty disgusting with bugs and clutter) since she's not fully able to clean etc. She also had like 4 cats and the smells are unbearable in there with the catlitter boxes. We adopted one of her cats; Be-bop, which is a crazy young cat who hasn't adapted to our house or cat yet (it's hasn't even been a day yet), but she is inquisitive as fuck checking every nook and cranny around the house. I need a still need a real job though.

Did live painting @ CD on Tues, was redeveloping tonsilitis and felt sore and fatigued and couldn't really hang. Started a pretty sick piece though. Will post later.
First HB artwalk this year came up against yesterday. Got assigned the same spot, talked to the promoter guy a bit who hooked us up @ 2nd floor and he took my pic etc. Had OCweekly come by and take my pic as well, they gave me an OCweekly branded chapstick which was odd. Hopefully I make an article, that'd be swell. Also talked with the HB artwalk lead woman about maybe moving my spot next time to the more prime area near the fountain in the midst of mainstreet. That's the ideal spot as far as I'm concerned. Most importantly though, a woman came and bought 2 smaller joker paintings and commissioned another from me 100$. Not bad. I also met this other artist, Sam. He had some pretty cool stuff and was selling it super cheap. We got to talking through out the night and he said to call him about maybe getting a job in IT or something at his dental marketing firm.
I got this other metal show live painting thing going on for Sat, and then @CD still doing live painting on Tues again and then the SA artwalk the week after, as well as another 2nd Floor on the 3rd.
Pretty cool. Unfortunately, the worst part about all this is that I got sick during this busy week and have missed all the appointments I made for going to job fairs and job help meetings etc. Hopefully I can reschedule all that shit. I'll go in there on Mon and do all that.
Here are some updates of recent stuff:
Droopy hat - sold 35$

Apr. 5, 2014 I finished the commission for another 'goodbye kitty' for the woman in the last post. Haven't delivered it yet though. I was hanging on to it for the couple of shows I had this week so people could see it. It turns out most people (girls mainly) really like this style, and I may have to switch it up and do more stuff like that. At least give the graffiti stuff a break or combine it with characters and other stuff.
Anyway, the 2nd floor art show Thurs was cool, lot of people there this time and they hooked up lots of drinks and food again. DJ giving us shoutouts throughout the night etc. No sales but was working on a new piece and talked to people and networking etc. They actually had some tattoo shop setup on the other side of the bar too and selling shirts and stickers etc. The coolest thing though was they had some new prints up on the wall that were seriously like the craziest renaissance style fine art I've seen in a while. The artists page: http://www.facebook.com/CarlosTorresArt/photos_stream, he had like ships or ship themes incorporated into the women in that old 1700s style gowns. Honestly, the originals should be in museums if they aren't already.
Did the SA artwalk again. Seemed to be more people and better lighting this time so I could paint and show off my stuff better. Sold a small painting for 30$ to an older couple. It was honestly one of my favorite ones, I'll have to do another some time. Was mainly working on the same painting that I was working on at 2nd floor. It's probably like 50-60% done now. It already looks pretty good though. It actually says 'Cyber optix' which is a good dubstep producer that is a friend of a friend. Hoping that he might be interested in using it or buying it in the future if he digs it. Either way it looks cool.
Got the tuesday events @ copperdoor always coming up, reinvited to the HBartwalk and I might be at the fountain zone this time (main area) which is pretty cool. My friend is pretty bad about applying for shit so I'm hoping he will be down there with me as the promoter from 2nd floor was telling him he's got an in for sure. A friend also sent me a link to some Newport beach street art festival thing, I sent them emails with pics and they called me back and left a message. It's sort of vague so I'll have to call them back tomorrow about it. Also got a vm from the place Sam works, gotta call them first thing tomorrow as well.

May 01, 2014
Have done a number of bar shows and events. Scheduled for this Bradstock OCML event, Tues @ CD still, HB artwalk later this month, SA artwalk is this weekened but I have other plans that may conflict, . Hopefully I can convince people to come hang out down there while I do art so it all works out. I did a gig 3 weeks ago (installed outdoor lighting Mission SJC) that was supposed to pay 150$ but I'm pretty sure someone swindled my friend and I and we probably not gonna get paid, I was counting on that money to buy some art supplies and more canvas.
I digress, the last event was for 714Brew (which if you follow this blog, I designed the label for) at Ringside Lounge in HB. The people there are pretty cool, as they bought a bunch of boxing themed art from a guy I know to dress the place up real nice. I sold those 2 little skull canvas that I had for like 8 years and didn't really ever plan to sell but I needed the money, and I can make more (15$). Ironically, it was 2 different buyers that night and I let the guy haggle me down to 5$ and a cig as I was leaving, lol.
Here are the last 2 pieces I was working on. The joker I just realized is missing the words on the sides and the card shaped border. People like the Jokers too, gotta make more of those. The other is a Dubstep DJs name that used to live with my friend who I kinda sort of know (who's pretty famous). I think he kinda screwed my friend over on rent or something and he moved back to TN. My friend recently moved nearby me, and he gave me his old Galaxy Note so I can take better pics and finally make an instagram, but I need to buy a battery for it (which is why I needed that money as well) Whatever. Here are the pieces:
CyberOptix 12x16
Ghost Joker 12x9
PS- also Solar Flare given in lieu of 50$ fee HB ARTwalk for their silent auction
12x16 iirc This piece was originally just supposed to be a backdrop for some graffiti stuff, but everyone seemed to like it (including me) as it was. I plan to make a bunch more of these, as they are rather easy for me and fun to make.

Man, you don't get enough love for all your work! All of this is really well done and creative. It's interesting to hear about your ventures in the artistic world. Is this just a hobby you do that results in some extra bucks or are you planning to be a full-time artist? In any case, great work and keep it going.

I don't really plan to be a full time artist, it's more of a hobby. But since I have lost my job I've been pursuing it more. I'm going to paint less graffiti related stuff and see how that goes, and then I'm going to put it on the back burner again if it's not as successful. It just kinda sucks that what I like to do/paint isn't what people like. It honestly feels like I have to dumb myself down. Sucks.
And thanks,
PS- Another update coming soon.

Haven't been updating recently, have done a lot. Not sure If I can remember it all.
I participated in 3 artwalks since the last update. The first was May HB artwalk, they placed me in the center area around the fountain in the middle of main street (which is prime location). However, they put like 4-5 other artists there and the space is a little bit more tight because of the layout. I talked with the other artists and some patrons, but it was a somewhat low turnout artwalk and not very successful for me. One guy had an interesting style of painting where he basically squirted tubes of acrylic paints all over a canvas and then colored the whole thing black, or a couple of other colors on top of that to create a neat texture etc. I might steal that for a background design some day. I can't remember what I was working on at the time, maybe a hat or sketches or something.
I think I may have done another random tuesday but my friend doesn't seem to be much interested in doing them anymore, don't blame him, and I think the promoter wanted to just focus on the Artwalks as well.
The 2nd artwalk was the SA artwalk again. This time they had a bunch of artists and I got placed inside the bar while they had street painters workout outside with spraypaint etc. Pretty cool stuff. I didn't get any pics though.I was mostly working on the new joker design and this Stoned Lion (sold) that I didn't get a picture of, kinda upset about that. Anyway, since it was Saturday night and they had live music, lots of people, and fog machines etc, it was pretty stuffy in there. And didn't get much exposure either. Imo, you gotta be outside for these artwalks because bar patrons inside a bar are not generally people outside walking from gallery to gallery looking at art or looking to spend money on art.
The 3rd artwalk, HB again, this time they put me on the newly built area off the main street. It's actually a pretty decent spot though, as this is less crowded and rowdy local party area, and more of a shopping area. In other words, people are coming out with money to spend on goods instead of foods/drinks or just hanging out, which is great.
I talked to a lot of people and networked with some other artists a bit. Talking about the power of instagram these days, I just recently made an account so I'm still learning about these gay ass hashtags (is there a way to save a bunch I can copy/paste on each image?). #octothorpe etc.
As I mentioned earlier, I sold that lion painting to a guy who just moved into a place and was looking for some artwork, and I never snapped a photo of it. IIRC, it was an 12x9 of a Joe Camel faced, mature Simba looking lion, with bloodshot eyes and a large cigar joint in his mouth. Like I said, I wasn't entirely done with it because I was planning to put smoke and other highlights onto it but the guy liked it and wanted to buy it for nearly the price (37$) I was asking so I'm not going to argue with that. For the most time I was working on a hat that I commissioned that I should be done with by now, but I've been busy etc.
After the artwalk, whom my friend was doing her pottery stuff at as well. We ended up going to some bar for her friend's bday in Newport. Lotta weird/funny shit happened and then we ended up going to afterparty spots where people were doing coke and I just left and started walking around aimlessly. Eventually we went back to crash at her pad and spent the next day riding bikes around the backbay which was cool but I kinda got stuck out there another night for someone else party. etc. I actually still have her pottery wheel at my house that I need to get back to her, but she hasn't contacted me yet.
Aside from that shit, I injured my back doing squats (bad form/previous injury which is mostly recovered now), so I sorta been out of commission lounging around this last week. I also went on a date with some girl who seems really cool from a dating site. She showed me a cool bar in Tustin and then we got hammered in Santa Ana, got lost, then ended up at her place. Was fun. Supposed to hang out later this week.
I got a whole list of shit I need to take care of sitting in front of me right here, so as much as I would like to just do art and play video games. I'm kinda backlogged because of this stupid injury. I got my tax return last week so I'm gonna go buy a pen tablet and learn photoshop/illustrator soon as well. Still slanging shit via craiglist, and applying to ads on there.
Oh yea, almost forgot. I did 6 cartoon dog drawings for this pet company http://lucypetfoundation.org/ (warning: plays music)
All of these were sketches on paper standard paper, then painted with acrylics, and paint markers. I scanned em at fedex/kinkos and then shipped em snail mail. 50$ each.
|
Did another SA artwalk. Something got messed up, our promoter didn't book that night or something and we showed up anyway. Also noticed the local graffiti shop GCS closed down and was moving to Pomona or something on super short notice. So my friend and I just setup our shit in their front walkway for the duration of the artwalk. Was kind awkward when people were asking if this was our space or whatever.
Anyway, I finished up the hat I was working on and mailed it off. Still working on this joker and another hat, someone else seems to want a SC or LoL themed hat so maybe I'll be doing that soon as well.
Jah One sold 30$

Nice stuff

Thanks, I just did a couple of space backgrounds. Not sure If I plan to paint a subject onto them though. I'll post pics later.
