Firstly, i had fun. Honestly much more than i expected when you said you were gonna do DnD. I kind of half-expected some boring dungeoncrawl, instead we got a pretty open game in a cool world. Which also brings me to my first negative point, maybe the game was a bit too open, especially for a oneshot. (I will now go with the assumption that you actually had some sort of plot planned instead of a pure sandbox) Basically, i think you planned too many actions for us, and that backfired a bit. The whole scene with the well was very cinematographic, but our actions were also pretty much completely pre-planned, which usually doesn't work out too well. A random guy passing on the street is usually ignored if there are 100 people passing at the same time, even if you give a good description of him (in that situation i honestly thought the main point of that description was to show us what a weird place we had stumbled upon). I guess we could have been a bit more focussed and actually have a goal ourselves, like getting back home or something along those lines. At that point a major problem (at least for me) was that we were actually not that used to our characters yet, and weren't actually sure what their goals would be in that situation. I think your plot hooks were a bit too soft, and probably focussed more towards players that actively search the plot based on subtle dm hints (like an excessive description of a random npc) instead of those that focus more on what their characters would do instead of trying to find out what the dms plan is. One major complaint i have was in the fight with the thieves in the back alley. If a player wants to do something that makes sense in the context of the ingame situation, don't tell him he can't do that just because there is no rule covering it. If a thief is running away, and you are half in his way, you can try to grapple him to the ground. If there is no rule for that, make one up. Choose something like dex or str, give it a difficulty based on whatever you like, and you got something to roll to decide. I think you realized this yourself and did basically this later when we tried to capture the thief boss. Of course the whole internet situation was problematic, but mostly because it cost a lot of time always having to repeat everything. And time is usually already short in a oneshot in a new system between explaining the rules and having to repeat them for players who don't know them, everyone having to look stuff up, etc... | ||

Also, i wouldn't say your investigation stagnated, you found out multiple things. You can't find a giant maze under the pyramids every day. You maybe just need to make a few connections between things you know. Or maybe a few less. I should probably not say this, but there are multiple different groups around. You might want to consider not making everyone you meet your enemy. I think you got enough of those already. | ||

Since it might be risky to approach Huo Fong directly, maybe one step to find out more about him can be to find a business competitor or something who knows about him to give us some more information? Did anyone write down the name of that missing flower girl? Anyway, we know there's a chance we'll find "John Smith" if we manage to find her, so maybe we could go back to the flower girl houses, to umm... Talk privately to the other girls. They probably knew her better than the manager did, and might be able to tell us something about her plans or where she might have gone, IF we can convince them that we're friendly. Din Xiao Lao can speak the language, but is generally not a great talker or very charming. I think Yaleesha would have the best chance of relating to them and convincing them to talk. So maybe a threesome? :D I would also be interested to know what the dead monks knew, but that might be hard with just general questions like "what happened in China during the Quin dynasty?", because a lot of things probably happened... | ||

Which does remind me of how easy investigations are when you have magical bullshit like scrying, teleportation, detect lies/alignment, speak to dead, ect. | ||
