i took apart my personal favorite of our songs that jan wrote and cut it up so that i could perform it live. here's what it looks like. i'm dreadfully sorry for the quality. i have a really pretty guitar too, shame it's out of the shot =((((

the colorful button board (what someone called it after a show) is an apc20, pressing stuff triggers a sample. by themselves samples can be very plain but together it can get really crazy. used as a metaphor for people, it's inspiring. i'm a bit worried it won't be fun to watch live though, since people are usually below and in front of me. i guess if i wear really reflective sunglasses it could show off all the colors? =]

there's a button you hold down with the apc that lights up in a 4x4 red grid. it's basically a minimap where each button represents 1/16th of where your 'screen' is on the apc's main button layout (the 8x5 grid). in playing a song like this, there's some dexterity and timing involved and a lot of build orders just like brood warstarcraft (no commentary on sc2!). it's very comforting to still be working with the same concepts i was 10 years ago on bnet.

The "busy" period starting around 1:00 building to around 2:30 could use some different levels I think - you start to lose individual sounds into just a solid wall of tones. That may have been the effect you were going for in the song, but it is a little overwhelming.

The song is pretty good. Not my usual genre but pretty nice, and impressive that it's just you and an apc.

respectfully disagree

fuckin great. definitely my fave. though I suppose the levels idea works, to make the individual notes louder and the music part a little softer, so you can hear everything that's happening. and what not.

I don't know how technically versed you are, but it would be cool if you could wired (or at least coordinate) the buttons on the board to some sort of stage light display. So whenever you change colors on the board, the stage lights/LEDs mimic the clicks on some fashion.

On a side note, madeon does does the same thing in his song Pop Culture.

The whole thing, but especially 2:30+, is really great. The latter quarter, with the piano, and the reverb, that sounds really awesome. I haven't heard anything like that before personally. Do you mind if I use this in a machinima-esque production I am producing? Probably looking at like a year or so until it's actually viewable/finished, and I don't plan to publicize it much, but maybe I can intermix this into the audio in a way that comes out really well. I've spent a long, long time looking for music just like that.

I have to agree. Simply too many audio layers and the left-/right-channels being alternated a bit excessively. Also I feel like the kick @0:33 onwards is slightly off-beat - at least I sense something odd to it, but maybe it's just me.

It's pretty good all in all, sounds really interesting. Makes me want to buy a midi-controller (like the infamous Maschine) so bad.
Keep up the good work!

I have to agree with the saturatio of the 1:10-2:xx part. There are a lot of lines and the breakcorish drums on the background plus the guitar sounds a bit weird to me.

Love the rest of the song, being a fan of your band since i first came to TL and heard a song of Castles in a broadcast, cant remember which. 2:30+ im really in love with that, the piano line is really good with all the background sounds and everything.

Keep it up man, hope you guys get famous and come to Spain on Tour

Sounds really great! Nicely done! It's a very pleasing texture and progression.

It really is hard to figure out how to perform electronic music live though for sure. Since it's electronic, there's no difference in sound between something pre-recorded and samples/synths that are triggered live, so the question always becomes, "Why am I here at all? What should I do besides just hitting the play button?" Incorporating your human body into the performance in a non-redundant way can be tough. I like that you include live instrument playing along with the samples, especially the guitar since it produces a sound that is actually unique in live performance, as opposed to the keys and sampler which will sound they same whether they are live or pre-recorded.

I did a set at a club in Tokyo last Saturday and I ran into the same problem you expressed: how do I make this not boring for a live audience? I ended up doing something similar to you as well, playing keyboards along to samples. I was happy with the compositions, but I don't think I really succeeded at pulling off a particularly interesting live show.

Sounds sweet. I don't think it sounds oversaturated--a lot of electro-rock bands do similar things in the loud parts.

Rat a Tat, Octopus Project, This Will Destroy You, Explosions in the Sky.

Not saying you sound like them, just trying to counter the argument that it sounds too messy at parts. I mean, it sounds messy as hell, but in a good way :D.

nothing wrong with the saturated part at all. levels sound perfect. Everything is perfect. You guys just aren't used to this style :D

reminds me of sigur ros - festival and that's a bloody high level of compliment for me to compare anyone with them :D
+ Show Spoiler +

goooood shit man I'm putting the final touches on my first non solo guitar track (or so I though I've been doing for the past 3-4 days).

I'm just starting and I've already blown so much money buying a keyboard, good headphones and a guitar to pc link costing a total of RM1.5k or so (hate the shitty buying power) before getting an apc/mpc thing.. though I could map it to my keyboard I guess.

Don't worry, the only way to please everyone is to make a normal boring piano track with some brass and strings layered and a nice clear voice over it. You don't want to do that do you :D

I mean you can't possibly "convince" any random teenager to listen to the blues can you? They have to want it themselves and be interested to listen to the song and your explainations. Or they may just slowly acquire that taste when the time comes. Just like how I'd have hated a lot of stuff that I like now if you've given it to me a 5 years ago. Yours included. Many many people don't like even the great legends of rock or jazz or classical. It's only fair that not everyone like your stuff.

Sadly I was planning to make something like this too but it ended up as something like what I said you won't want to do hahahahahahaha that's so ironic.

So did you use samples (as in cut and pasted from other tracks, not sample sounds from libraries) or did you make everything using libraries and midi stuff?

http://soundcloud.com/castlesmusic
it's free to dl, I'm going to get everything :D And followed you

Maybe I should add that if you don't like it, try to think of it as the tension part like the part where the villian comes in a movie or where the shit hits the fan (aliens/big sharks/the japanese etc).

You don't feel good or really secure with the situation but that's ok, because the hero is going to kick his ass later. The tension is going to resolve.

And just like how romantic movies can make you feel good, thriller or horror or action movies can do the same too. And for many people, the action scenes and main thrilling parts of the movie are the -- climax.

hope I make sense. I once ended a song with some tension which will make the listener feel empty (which was the intension) after having a whole part of romantic like stuff and everyone complained about the ending too haha

Any explaination behind the title of nanjing 3000?

DJ's I've seen perform with similar equipment have used a video cam -> projector towards the wall behind them or in one scenario, really classy but was a bitch to pull off properly (and only suitable for small sets), basically a wall of mirrors behind and above them to reflect everything they're doing on the set towards the people in front of them. The whole projector thing isn't too expensive or tricky to pull off tho, add some cool visualizations on top and you're golden.
