I can't stop playing this game. It's taking over all of my free time. I am so unbelievably bad at this game. Castle, Rampart, Tower, Inferno, doesn't matter, I get destroyed. I can't sleep, I can't eat, I have to get better at this game. Is it better to take leadership or logistics? Archery or Offence? Should I split my Marksmen into 2 groups of 50, or leave them at one stack of 100? It seems that every curve ball the game throws at me is met with eyes shut and a mad frenzy of swings hoping to make contact. Don't even get me started on build order. Making more money per turn is a good thing right? WRONG! You're boned, you lose, no creatures to protect your town. OH, so I should start pumping up the breeding to grounds to produce more guys then right? DOUBLE WRONG'DED! You have no money to purchase those units. Well certainly then the most obvious choice to take a small sampling of each right? HONG KONG WRONG! You didn't specialize so you're terrible at all things, not just one aspect. How many heroes should I make? When should I buy them? Who is better to send out into the world and who is better at protecting the town? Should I go magic heroes or might heroes? Is knowledge better or power better?
Now what most of you are thinking is that there are a billion sites already solely devoted to this game already, so why don't I find one of those and just copy a strategy until I learn enough to adapt on my own? Well I tried. And I still stink. Not to mention that while a billion people agree that inferno is the worst, there will be 900 million people saying that it's one of the best. So everything is useful in its own right! Hurray! No bad choices to be made, just bad management. I hate you, you stupid game. All the answers seem to be right in front of me, I just can't grasp them. Everything is right there, right out in the open, waiting for someone to recognize and mobilize. And I sit here, squinting at the screen in vain, wondering how my opponent can destroy a throng of medusas with just some crummy skeletons, while my army of archangels gets absolutely obliterated by a pack of pixies. I can't stop playing and I'm so very tired...

Man I suck so hard at Heroes 3...
Maybe it's because I pick Fortress and try to capital rush every game

I hope you're still having fun, Armageddon is a lot of fun. I never really connected with another HoMnM game as much as #3. The graphics still look fine in my opinion, and I loved how easy it was to set up your own imba map (:

Sounds like you need to use Thant for ezmode.

The 2nd was the best! Gold edition for the win! 3rd HoMM was also great but the 2nd felt more epic :D
Are you playing the AI or what? Just crank down the difficulty and enjoy the game...
To answer some of your questions directly:
Ranged units: If you can one-shot almost anything you fight, divide them. When fighting bigger things stack them. Take skills that fits your hero. So of you have a warrior type pick Offence/defence. Depending on your race pick archery. Logistic is only useful on "travelling heroes". Heroes that scout, pick treasure or move armies.
Now I want to play HoMM =/

I looooooooooove this game and still play it religiously (along with BG 1, 2 & ToB). Go rampart, they're the best because they all have innate magic resistance and a lot of CC skills (or you can go Dungeon and just baws the lategame.) If you want more tips, hit me up with a pm for more specifics.

Anyone recommend custom maps to play single player? I'm having a hard time finding good ones. I've beaten most of the ones that come with the game on 130% difficulty, but 160% feels unbeatable T_T

HoMM 3 is my favorite as well and I could beat the computer pretty much any situation. I don't know what you are doing wrong, OP and it has been a lot of time since I last played this game so I don't remember specific strategies anymore.
One general advice I can give you, though, is that magic skills are overpowered as fuck and the computer only uses magic spells to a fraction of their potential. So I guess you should try working with Magic heroes and get yourself some good spells early so you can abuse the fuck out of it.
And the spell Town Portal is the best spell in the game.
Those two things are all I remember, sorry I can't help more.

pff. Some general tips: All your heros have some special talents. Build them accordingly, and give them the right monsters. Also check the tavern every week, sometimes there are heroes that give free resources.
As a starting tactic, get some cannonfodder, and as much ranged attackers (plus ballista) as you can. move the cannonfodder around, also, wait with your turn until the (slower/lower initiative) opponent has done their move, then do a double move, also wait for them to come into the range where your ranged attack does full damage. Leave the ranged camps alone on the map, as long as you don't desperately need the stuff, or until you have a strong army and a hero with diplomacy.
Stacking depends a lot on what you are fighting, and with what. If I fight monsters, and my ranged troops have a huge range of damage (like 1-4) one stack I can bless (always maximal damage) is a lot better than several I can't bless all at once.

Most specifically: Blind. Use blind as much as possible.

Me and my best friend would have sleep overs and play this game (or one of its predecessors) through the night. On a few occasions he went to sleep but I stayed up playing. All of a sudden it crashed and sang out into the quiet night "Heroes of might and magic, has run out, of memory, pleaase...." Fun times.

HoMM3 kicks ass, I'm usually on gameranger under xJonnyJx, if you want to play HoMM3 let me know

oof heroes 3 too hard T_____T

Heroes 3 might be my favourite game. Still holds up to today's titles. A definite choice for LANs.
Stronghold and Castle are usually good for beginners. Personally I love playing Fortress with that hero with the awesome facial hair.

Just started playing this again a few weeks ago. My wife has become obsessed with it.

fricking impsossible game T_T

Right now the only game installed on this laptop is HoMaM 3. I played it until i could not stand it once upon a time, but i rediscovered the fun of it when i cranked the difficulty up to 0 starting resources on smaller maps. Dying is fun :D
A very useful tip is to note your level 1 mage guild spells; they very much determine the value of the magic schools. Haste= Definitely get expert air magic Slow= Definitely get expert earth magic Bless= Look at your damage range and think what expert bless might do for you. Curse= Expert fire magic.
Starting with cash+solmyr+2nd hero+master gremlins is always a sure setup for getting strongly into the midgame. If you are playing the expansions, 4 easy to get Phoenixes per week is the most broken town tingie, and expert bless on units that are consistently 2-7, 2-8 damage is just plain not balanced.
Also; if you get advanced level of logistic spells (Town portal w earth magic, Dimension door w air magic) you kind of get auto-win against the CPU´s.
Also do not forget that expert view air is a great navigation tool, and that you can find the grail easier than you think if you work logically about it.
Amazing, amazing game

Aw man I dust this off every once in awhile to play. Always wondered about how to play it 'properly', at that. Feel like I'm just randomly dicking around.

EDIT:I'll put it somewhere else..
