Edit: Please direct any questions about Hatchery recruitment to the EVE Corporation thread linked just below. Please don't post them in my blog comments. Thanks.
For any readers who aren't aware, there's a corporation in EVE Online for TL.net's members, called The Hatchery. Here's the thread:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=88359
I started a character a little over a year ago, but since stories about Kwark's fleet commander personality intimidated me a little bit, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to invest my time in another MMO, I played solo for a long time.
EVE isn't really a game for people playing by themselves. I could see someone starting WoW and playing at least a hundred hours before feeling like they had to team up with someone else to get farther, but in EVE it's a little more obvious that the other players are the game.
Even so, I spent a year training up skills, flying more complicated and expensive ships, and occasionally getting a friend to sign up for a few weeks to join me. Nevertheless, the promise of joining Hatchery and getting exposed to the much more rigorous game of fleet combat, which really is what EVE is all about, kept nagging at me.
So, a few weeks ago I joined The Hatchery.
I'd tried sometime around May, finally being pushed over the edge by being killed by a group including a Hatchery member while running a mission in a far too expensive and horribly-fitted ship. Here's what tofucake had to say about it:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=88359¤tpage=1080#21586
Unfortunately, Hatchery had gone into a no-invites mode to prepare for the annual Alliance Tournament, an e-sports-ified combat tournament run by CCP, the developers of EVE. I applied, but everyone was pretty distracted and I ended up falling through the cracks, so I waited until all that had passed, and tried again at the start of August.
Suddenly, Lysenko was a member of The Hatchery:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/hOUER.jpg)
Of course, this was only the beginning.
I didn't play much for a couple weeks, because of work obligations, but about a week ago I started making more of an effort.
A week ago, I was still trying to fit my own ships, with little comprehension of how one thinks through a fit. This was the result. (The comments tell the story.)
http://teamliquid.killmail.org/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=14307524
Hatchery has a reputation for being direct about people's mistakes, and it's been a long week. Much of my effort has gone into learning how not to get my ships killed, where to go to find a decent fit, and how to fit in in a fleet setting. I have some experience raiding in WoW at a reasonably high level, and Kwark's fleet leadership is top notch. While Kwark doesn't have much patience for people who aren't paying attention or calling out when they're confused, he's more understanding of new players than I think he likes to let on.
Anyway, with the help of some very successful fleet ops and soaking up some good information from the better players around me, today I've crossed over to being net positive for my few weeks in The Hatchery in terms of value killed to value lost.
http://teamliquid.killmail.org/?a=pilot_detail&view=kills&plt_id=914935&m=8&y=2012
All that aside, though, I'm coming to realize that the appeal of EVE as a game is all in the teamwork, to a much greater extent than other MMOs I've played. It's a unique and fascinating game.
I just need to kill more E-UNI miners, then I'll be feeling good about life.

I tried out EVE for a bit a while ago with the Hatchery, was pretty awesome, unfortunately I kinda faded away without telling anybody, because of going through depression IRL, struggling with my Master's thesis and moving back to France from Germany. Now I'm too ashamed (and scared of Kwark :<) to re-try the adventure.
That said, it was a pretty awesome time I had there - even if the gameplay seemed a bit slow at first, the depth of the game is really incredible and awesome. EVE is probably the only real true MMO game out there.
|
Haha Bob! If you have the inclination and the time, don't be scared of Kwark. He certainly lets people have it when they're on the wrong track, but at the same time he wants to see people succeed too.
Plus, right now, we have a large enough group in tackle frigates that you have to screw up really badly to get noticed! :D
|
Hatch life pretty awesome, and then you look around six months later and you're bittervetting hardcore. Always good to see (read) someone having fun in EVE.
|
I faded away due to the time commitment Sorry to people who wasted their time helping me out. I really appreciated it.
|
Mity Hat Tree represent~
Kwark is actually a really nice guy once you get past all the huffing and puffing, don't let him scare you off!
I do believe I might possibly need to come back to this game in the near future.
|
Every time I come back to EVE it's because I hear of all the awesome fun people are having in it, but I quickly realise how god damn shitty the game is. With that said the little time I flew with the Hatchery guys was the most fun I had in that terrible game
|
Nice to see you're enjoying yourself! I've been on holiday so I don't think I've seen you around (in game I'm Vargan Armer). I think Kwark is actually a nice person somewhere deep inside the twisted depths of his heart. Probably.

It's fun with The Hatchery :D

I wanted to play pretty much just to see kwark rule with an iron fist. i just dont have the time commitment.
|
I joined up a while ago with the hatch, and faded away... I haven't had the money to keep a subscription, nor have I been able to make enough money doing L4s because It took so long to get my damn ship. I'd like to get back into eve sometime but for now I don't have the money to get myself started.

Religiously stealing fits for now. I'd been throwing things on and saying "oh that might be handy" in a vacuum and not having the experience or perspective to understand for what it's helpful to optimize. I'm sure sooner or later that will change, but I can tell there's a long way to go.

I keep thinking I want to play this game again. But then I realise if I'm not in a null sec alliance i'm going to get bored, and then the hassle of getting into one will frustrate me, and then getting all my shit out there without getting scammed and losing everything on the way will take too much time. Why is life so difficult?
The best time I had in this game was playing in the /v/ corp in TEST and just trolling the shit out of all the TEST members while being able to semi-afk rat while watching GSL on my other screen. The isk rate wasn't great but I didn't mind because I was just watching GSL anyway and I managed to make >1bil from pure belt ratting while watching GSL.

Not in a null sec alliance?
Please tell me you don't enjoy sitting on a Titan for 3 hours waiting for the bridge and that you don't enjoy structure grinds and that you don't think "approach fc, mwd on, f1 targets alphabetically" is PvP....
please.................
and 1b in 4 hours or so of belt ratting?

I enjoyed getting verbally abused by Kwark. Enjoyed it a bit too much.

No but bumping your own titans out of position is pretty fun.
The constant threat of getting jumped and then starting counterfleets to go after raiders into your systems is pretty fun.
Going into the neutral null sec space and doing missions while there are 3 enemy corps located in that system is pretty fun.
Also, what are you doing for that 1b in 10 minutes? This is me afk ratting, not soloing complexes or anything like that.
Best story I have is where me and a friend were ratting in some dead end system so we could know if people were coming down. A tengu is reported in the defence comms. He keeps coming down and disrupting our ratting and insulting everyone he manages to jump over the local chat. We get mad so my friend jumps in his carrier and moves his ship on his cyno account onto the gate in a dead end tunnel. Person jumps through decides to engage. My friend instantly throws down the cyno and jumps in on his carrier and kills the tengu so fast. More shittalking ensues then I have ever seen before.
Good times.
Also another time me and an irl friend made new accounts purely to go through high sec and pop capsules that were floating through it. First one we got happened to be the CEO of one of the top 3 corps in that big alliance that was in northwest of null sec (can't remember the name, it's been too long since i played). Killed several bil worth of implants. Guy starts up chat with us getting real mad. We manage to convince him we're noobs and didn't know what we were doing. He gives us like 200mil to start us off in the game.
Gah, this is making me want to play again.

specifics of money making are internal to hatchery
we are the raiders, not the counter fleets, and we rarely lose (see this) when we raid...and when people drop a carrier on us that carrier tends to die.
so yeah, you killed a fail tengu. But we don't (in the long run) fail

Guy I worked with last year - a mechanic - played the game with his dad since beta... odd yes... He apparently is one of the biggest names in the game, never got his tag, but he farms accounts and sells them for ~1000$ each. Crazy game, crazy guy. I tried EVE, but I just felt that puzzle pirates was a more fun version of a similar style of game. Legit.

Stop your market games you chump!
It might've been a loki actually, it was one of the t3 ships that looks like a drake. I can't remmeber the name tbh.
I remember one time after we quit TEST and moved to some neutral null sec, we were doing a t1 cruiser troll roam and came up against a proper fleet. They had the pirate armageddon ship (can't remember it's name) and it warped in way in front of the rest of the fleet. We were like wut, and then nuked it. It died so fast. Looked at the killmail. Most shitfit ship I have ever seen (apart from one of my corpmates who for some reason thought a LAR would be good on a carrier lol). We then proceeded to warp out losing nothing for one helluva a ship (at least for a dozen t1 fit cruisers each worth practically nothing).

A lot of people are too preoccupied with these notions that EVE is difficult (which it is), that the TL eve corp is elitists (which we are) and being yelled at (which you will) and really don't know what they're missing.
EVE is only as time consuming as you want it to be. You don't have to grind to level up -- you train skills in real time, even when you're offline. Yet the skills you train allow you to become better specialized at a certain role you'd like to play, rather than "oh level 90 will smash a level 40 regardless of skill". The game has a lot of real life skill that I'm sure many BW and SC2 lovers can appreciate. It's not uncommon to see 6 year old characters losing ridiculously expensive ships due to stupid things. It's also not uncommon to have <1 month old Hatchery pilots causing havoc left and right.
The sandbox that CCP promotes EVE as allows any player to make ridiculous amounts of in-game currency through EULA abiding methods, and depending on the amount of effort and brainpower you're willing to commit, you can either grind for hours making pennies or spend 10 minutes updating a spreadsheet and building castles in a day.
There's a LOT to do in EVE... but if you're going to solo, much of what to do takes initiative. Often people are lazy and don't take initiative, get bored, and blame that the game is boring. This is where the Hatchery comes into play. We won't hold your hand through every aspect, but we'll give you the tools and advice to do whatever it is you want, then throw you into the pit and let you figure out the rest yourself.
Obligatory mentioning of Kwark.
|
Kwark's a great guy, period. He actually cares for the newer pilots and helps them. Yes, he will call you stupid, he will call you retarded, he will call you ignorant - all of which are legitimate at the time he's telling you that, but in the end he wants you to learn a lesson everytime.
Once you turn off the "butthurt"-switch and listen to the message he is trying to deliver, everything works out great.
So, if by any chance you are intimidated to try EVE because of Kwark and the Hatchery - don't be and join up right away.
(For this advert, I demand 500mil ISK be deposited into my account, thanks)
Hatchery life best life.

I came along for a roam for the first time this sunday, and I think I screwed up half the commands kwark gave. I'm not sure, maybe kwark had a good mood or it was because I didn't get anyone killed beside myself, but that wasn't even close to half as bad as the eve thread made me expect. So you really shouldn't not play because you're afraid of getting yelled at.
|
I"m just super confused as to how you even start in EVE. I don't really have time to play now that I'm starting school (at least if I want to pay in isk)
Any good reasonable guides, or do I just need to get EVE and try and join hatchery

The Hatchery is your guide.
They basically lay it all out for you...read the OP of the EVE thread in S&G and if you can't figure it out, they don't want you anyways :p

In terms of how you get the very basics, there is a recently-improved tutorial that will help you figure things out like undocking and how to activate your guns. Beyond that, you can join Hatchery. There are other corps that are well-regarded for helping out new players as well. If you aren't up for joining Hatchery, I suggest joining EVE University and flying around the Aldrat area in the best-fit freighter you can afford, preferably between 03:00 GMT (+00:00) and 07:00 GMT (+00:00) any day of the week.
PS: I'll bring beer.

I think it was not getting anyone else killed -- probably hard to do in a tackle Merlin, but I'll bet there are select circumstances where you could. I'm sure that would be worse.

Being super confused as to how you even start in EVE is what got me into it in the first place. I wanted a game that was a challenge, just like BW or SC2, and where you could choose to be competitive similar to iCCup or the SC2 ladder (Hatchery) or just casually fool around and do stupid shit and laugh just like 4v4 or Use Maps Settings (RvB, Faction Warfare, group PvE).
There are plenty of ways to play EVE for free (via paying with isk, via EULA abiding methods) without having to commit a lot of time. Many of Hatchery are students and you'll see them disappear during exam times, but they don't have issues keeping their accounts paid. It just takes a lot of thinking outside the box and creativity, which some of the big guys can help you out with. You can even pay on and off, CCP's Account Management system allows you to easily switch back and forth between paying subscription and paying with PLEX/isk.
There are a lot of great guides out there, but it's hit and miss. I'll link you one but with caution. + Show Spoiler +http://www.isktheguide.com/ Spending some time chatting with us will teach you more than spending days reading through all the guides out there. We're really really nice and welcoming people, minus a handful of butthurt bitter vets (you know you who are).

I think the quickest way to learn how to not be bad in this game is to screw up in an op and have people yell at you. Or to link your ships fit and have people yell at you. As long as it's not just mindless yelling and it's more "stop being an idiot, this is what you should be doing".
That's how I learnt at least.

This blog was also really interesting but like all MMOs, I'm afraid of getting sucked in :X
Is it really possible to play without having to pay a dime ever by paying through in-game money, or will something inevitably happen at least once that will force you to have to use real money?

Because of FW, a 2-day old character can easily make enough money to keep playing. You will never have to pay any money to play EVE.

Wah I'm definitely intrigued now. You guys have said that it's not addicting or anything, but I'm still afraid it will be too much of a time sink. I'll read about it a bit more then.

Its not really a time sink because you can still progress even if you never play. Your skills continue training even when you are logged off.
|
The time sink comes in whenever you want to do anything fun and you find out you have to spend a couple hours going through 30 jumps, navigate a bunch of spreadsheets and menus, then get blown up doing that thing (and do all the tedious shit all over). FWIW the getting blowed up is where the game is fun

Kwark is either a really generous, thoughtful, helpful and very insightful warm person, or a complete dick. You just never know which one will show up on comms But I do miss him and the hatchery <3, I will be unsubbing for a bit myself, RL ftw. Ill probably join the hatch if I come back.

To elaborate, income from mining is incredibly subpar compared to the other money generating alternatives for a new character. Trading income is decent, but you need money to make money, so unless you get a loan from someone, this isn't viable.

Honestly, until they fix it, there is literally no reason a new player (or almost anyone else) should be doing anything other than FW.

God "The Hatchery" sounds so baller.
Oh man. TL why are you so awesome?

Good thing FB is not in Hatch and is therefore not awesome.

I had no success trying to play with the Hatchery, I joined the TS server, idled in chat and went through the system to get the invite and full account upgrade.
I'm not someone to play by his lone-some so I suppose EVE just isn't for me but after burning through 20mil isk (which I realize is pennies to established players) trying to FW continually being berated for not knowing things I had never been exposed to or understanding fully the first time I quit.
IF you want to succeed in the Hatchery make sure you get a mentor that will actually mentor you. Getting passed around like a sack of potatoes is a shitty way to do anything.

Who was your "mentor" then?
