Why is everyone saying this? At first I thought this was just a typo or a curious misspelling, but lately it seems to be said a lot more frequently. In fact I did a TL content search of it and it's everywhere! What's the reasoning behind this spelling of SC2? Is it to imply that SC2 is an inferior version of BW? If that's the case, even as a BW fan I think it's a bit immature. I don't want to start a flamewar; I'm just really curious about the origin of this phrase.

Seems to be something that's developed in the BW forums recently among some of the more vitriolic fans. I don't really see it as a big deal, it's just an easy way to spot bad posters.

In general, seeing something a lot of people (using that liberally here) die is never fun. Many of these guys saw the rise and fall of savior some saw the rise and fall of NaDa way far back. I saw neither but I enjoy BW, I don't love it like I love SC2. I could play SC2 every day if I had no other game, I am currently in a streak of work but when I have time off I play multiple games and SC2 is always top on my list for best made game. The BW guys feel that way about BW and having if die on them is like, for some, having a relative that they used to cope with and confide in when times got tough, die. That is very dramatic way of putting it, but yeah there are quite a few of them out there like that. The vitriolicism (idk if that counts as a word, but now it does) that comes from some of them is just shitty coping mechanisms that hell any one of us has. I know my coping isn't perfect, I blame myslef for everything that goes wrong and get depressed, of course that doesn't apply to BW, but you see my point. Don't let the hate ever make you curious it can only lead to die and kill standards instead of the normal live and let live that the SC2 community has adopted.

It's because people are hilariously stupid and think they're being clever. Your analysis is correct, there nothing more going on here. It's particularly sad because it gives a really awful image of the BW fans completely unnecessarily.

It originated as a misspelling and caught on. Kinda like saying teh instead of the.

I still sometimes use the phrase ScToo for fun, people are making a big deal out of nothing.

The term Star2 has been around since the open season 1. After the release of WoL, the term "BW" has been replaced by "SC1" and then "Star1" and Starcraft 2 is shortened into Star 2. The first time I heard that term was in the championship ceremony of either open season 1 or 2. The champion and Mr.Chae were refered as "Jeon Star1 Hyeon Star2 progamer" which is translated into "Former Star1, current Star2 progamer" (It is my translation and John actually translated it as "Former Starcraft 1 and now Starcraft 2 progamer"). Then, I heard that term a lot during OGN's WCG casts. That term was used a lot back then, probably for explaining SC2-specific stuff.

It's how Koreans call SC2. Instead of saying Starcraft 2 over and over again, they just say 'Star 2'. Much easier for them.

Indeed. Starcraft sounds like 2 vowels in English, but in Korean it is actually 6 vowels (Starcraft -> Su-Ta-Ku-Rae-Pu-Tu). Using a 2-vowel word that has the same meaning clearly is a lot easier for them.

I don't think the word itself is insulting or even has a history, it's just the context, I just saw it as a pun. I often write "I play SC Too!" or "I just beat you at x and I can at Sc too!" just to have a laugh with local players and confuse them as to which game i'm talking about.

N-word is not a universal insult either. If it actually was, black people wouldn't use that word for other black people. When a black person uses the word, it's cool; when a white person uses the word, it's an insult.

Back to ScToo, when a BW player/fanboy/forumgoer/anyone who actually has seen BW even for a milisecond uses it, it becomes an insult. When someone who is a completely stranger to BW uses it, it is nothing to care about.

I find it peculiar as well, it just seems like a sort of immature misspelling designed to be passive-aggressive towards SC2. Of course you can't prove any of this, but oh well.

I think people find it insulting because it was picked up from a kind of ignorant SC2 poster. So I guess people who don't like it feel that they're being put in the same category as him just because they like the same game. I guess that's understandable but a little over-sensitive in my view.

I personally don't say it because I don't think it's clever or interesting, but I've seen a few posters that I like use it and it didn't change my opinion of them at all.

I like it. It helps me filter out and ignore bad posts/posters. When I'm skimming through a thread, I can immediatly ignore any post that contains 'SCToo'. Same way I ignore any poster that uses alternating caps in their name.

Why does no one in this thread know what passive-agressive means. If this is insulting, it's purely aggressive (or a better word would be bitter). Please don't throw around accusations of passive-aggressive behaviour so lightly... Look it up at the very least. It does not simply mean subtle / not straight forward / not blunt aggression.

It is even worse than when people throw around the word entitlement. You don't even know what you're saying.

"expressing aggression in non-assertive, passive or indirect ways" says wiki, so how are we not using it correctly?

passive and indirect, meaning the person you're being aggressive to doesn't know the cause of it. It's basically a mental illness to commit passive aggressive behaviour because it means you don't know how to resolve conflict so you just take revenge without the person knowing where the revenge is coming from. Like being angry with a person and being rude to them but then when they ask why you say everything is fine. Or you don't wish someone a happy birthday on purpose to make them feel bad because you're mad at them, but if they bring it up you say you just forgot.

PS: wiki is not the best source of information. It's a starting point, but it's not where you should go for citing facts...

BLinD-RawR is spot on about the origin of SCToo, Stregon (who has since been nuked) just started randomly typing SCToo instead of SC2 consistently.

This thread is less about memes anymore, and more about useless bashing between Sc:Bw and ScToo..

ScToo players are eating that game up, even though there is no hard lined proof that lllllll is flash, and anyways the fat protoss man had to pp and lie about getting the door to give him time to regroup after the assault from Terran.. I think if protoss didnt pp with a weak lie, he would have lost, because he was clearly rattled...

It was incredibly random. I found it amusing.

I am absolutely going to refer to SCToo as SCToo from now on.

And finally the great ASM left his mark.

If you try and say it backwards really fast, it sounds like a rave.

I see no reason to doubt the wiki page on this. It still fits with the whole SCToo thing, which is kind of confusing, indirect, deliberate and hostile. (depending on your interpretation)

In any case, I'll not argue this with you further. If you feel very strongly about your interpretation then I won't convince you otherwise.

It's used by "hardcore" BW fans in a patronizing way as to remind any people reading it that they believe BW to be the better game. In the same vein they refuse to call SC2 units by their real names in the PL LR threads, calling colossi tripods, phoenixes sairs etcetera. It's obnoxious because even when you prefer BW over SC2, there's no reason to constantly be in everyone's face about it.

Oh you forgot X10A coined the word "ground stasis" and also marauders as "football players".This really reminded me in my days when cs source was patronized by die hard cs 1.6 player calling cs "Sauce" or source and yet no blood was spilled and merely shrug off as a joke by both scene . Bottom line is it's kind of hard for bw fans identify the units in sc2 and forcefields looks like stasis and hence the creation of "ground stasis" and the list goes on . Have to agree with colossus sc2 as tripod though because it really does look like one to me .

As for the "ScToo", I wouldn't take it as far to say it is on the same correlation as the N-word to black people. I've never used it, never will. I think its stupid and SC2 people think it like an insult. But come on, you can't really expect every SCBW person to be nice to SC2 people...

Disagree completely. I've personally never said these things. If I were to, and what I think most people use them for, is because they are more familiar with them and don't care about unit names in SC2. Is it WRONG to not follow a game and not learn its name? And as for your ending sentence, I can say the same thing about SC2 fans. Let me put it into words you'll understand by using your own sentence as an example. "It's obnoxious because even when you prefer SC2 over BW, there's no reason to constantly tell us our game is dying.

Yeah it's considered insulting because it's implying that SC2 wants to be Starcraft too, but falls short.

lol @ people getting insulted or saying this is an insult.

even if it was meant to be it doesnt make linguistic sense to me.

the word "too" = the word "also"
sctoo=scalso

if you think about it, people who use this are calling sc2, starcraft also. brood war is starcraft? sc2 is starcraft also. thats how i interpret it. by using the word also it implies they put it on the same level as brood war and so it mustn't be an insult unless they feel the same way about brood war TOO

I'm quite sure that it wasn't thought of in this manner until it was voiced that SC2 players found it unpleasant. To be honest, I'd attribute it more of an "insult" to "hardcore" Brood War fans than I would to Starcraft 2 fans... I'm sure you can figure out why.

Also, the reason SCtoo is a great insult to SC2 fans is because it's entirely left up to your imagination to determine why it's an insult. there's no better insult than one which is fueled by your imagination because every time you think of something worse, it overwrites the original "why this phrase is insulting". It actually likely had no meaning when it first came into being.

As for there's no reason for BW to be in people's faces, that's just straight up false, if Brood War doesn't impose itself, it's forgotten. Standard survival tactics.

Didn't I explain this to you? lol

I think that it means that SC2 doesn't really belong with SC vanilla/bw, so it's just like "Me too!" Hence, SCToo.

Oh and it's not like it's the most clever insult ever, it's just that a lot of the SC2 community gets upset about things so easily.
EffOrt. That is all.

No, it was "groundArbiters" and "rampStasis". And pretty sure it was me that came up with that.

Also, ppl refer to sc2 as sctoo cause "Starcraft 2 is Starcraft, too!".
