So I watch alot of streams and here is what I have comprimised from my experiance to have a sucessfull stream even if youre not Stephano!
-Camera is a must. -Mic on constantly so people can hear the keyboard clicking/background noise. This has to be psychological. I think it gives you a closer connection with the streamer as if you were in the same room as him. -Randomly being interactive with viewers setting up chats after the game and not saying anything in game does not have that "real feel" -troll here and there. Its the internet people like being more mean online than they are in life.
Any extra additions team liquid? I am writing an article on this and I need a few more bullet points!

You're going to have more in-depth than this if you want to write anything. You're not writing what's popular, you're writing what's conventional or expected of a streamer which doesn't necessarily equate to a popular stream.
When people first started doing it, it was popular and liked, hence its following and perhaps the answer to a popular stream is the uniqueness of it as well as giving something more to the viewer than a game they can play themselves.
Write from there and don't cut corners; think outside the box and take a better gander at streams as a whole from all perspectives!

The first stream I really got hooked on was Dragon's stream when it was just starting out and he only had about 300-400 regular viewers. I got so hooked on his stream because he really had fun while playing - real and troll games. I think that's the key to having a good stream, you need to have fun while playing.
Sadly, Dragon doesn't seem to have as much fun playing sc2 these days so his stream isn't as addicting but it's still fun to watch.

Being smart about PR for your stream also helps

I always watch those streams where high level players play constantly without too long breaks (Bomber, IdrA, forGG). The worst is Nony stream - rarely i saw him playing when I tuned in.

There's no one stream that's best for everyone. Some people value entertainment most; some learning; some drama and arguments.
I guess the common theme is be interesting and show passion?

Some other stuff to consider: -Regular streaming hours: choose a day (or days) and a time and stick with it! It makes it easier for people to find you again because they know when you will be streaming.
-Social media presence: tell your audience during a stream to follow you, then use that outlet to let them know when you are streaming.
-A catchy stream title: Normally I can't stand MW3 or DayZ streams, but if their streaming headline thing says x-number of kills or x-game winning streak I will tune in to see if they are really that good.
good luck with the article.

The fucking mech keyboard clicking actually makes destiny's stream unwatchable for me. it's super annoying, and the mic rarely needs to be on anyways anymore since he stopped saying stuff.
