Then please let me know I'm not getting trolled now T_T
+ Show Spoiler +$2800.00![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/qOT5E.png)
A friend of my family used to work for Revenue Canada and does our taxes free of charge nearly every year and that's what my expected return was. If this is some cruel, cruel fucking joke then I am going to be the saddest panda within a radius of 100km+.
I have the hugest list of shit I could spend this on, although I could easily just throw it at my student loans to make a decent dent in it. I have other things that demand attention first though, since I don't even have to stop paying off my student loans until like September since I graduate next month (fuck yeah!).
For starters, my part-time job ends when I graduate, and I'm looking for a full-time job in the field right now already, but if I'm to be out of a job for a month or whatever this will keep my alive and paying rent for a while!
Other things: I just got a traffic ticket today because some bastard stole the "N" sign off the back off my car and I got pulled over. They know it's common that the signs get stolen, but quite frankly don't give a shit and/or can't cut me a break because of it.
I organize SC2 related stuff (barcrafts, tournies, etc) in the local area and would love to put a little bit of it towards a prize pool for a tournament :3
The microphone on my headset broke recently, so I've been using my brother's crappy headset since he's out of town. It makes me ears sore and really is a low quality piece of crap.
I want to go snowboarding before the season is over! I'm fucking Canadian and never been snowboarding at the age of 20.
The house could use a bit of fixing. Shit costs money, enough said.
My dad always takes me and my brother out for beer and wings on wing night and pays the tab. My turn! Can't forget a case of beer at home of course.
OH I CAN KEEP GOING. Pleaaaaaaaaaaase don't be trolling me gods!

Lol I get some back every year because I'm a very very poor student but honestly it just goes straight in my bank account to make it slightly less red... slightly.
I wouldn't mind that return T_T.

What is this 'N' sign you speak of?

Some provisional driving licence i assume?
Getting a tax refund is almost better than Christmas! The year before i went travelling South America the government gave me back $1,600 just before i left! It was insanity!
Student loans sounds responsible - a little bit too responsible.
I'd go --> Headphones, wing night, traffic ticket and rent.. in that order

I wish I got a decent return. Working full time means I might get enough to cover a meal. Nothing fancy, like McDonald's or possibly Burker King. I probably pay more to submit my return than I get back which is hardly an incentive to complete my taxes.
Nice cash injection you have there. I agree that paying for your student loan is way too responsible. Free money should be spent recklessly, like buying an oversized Mario shaped teddy bear, or a years supply of jelly beans.

With that, you have to drive around with someone who is 25+ and has their full license (class 5). You have to display a magnetic sign on the back of your car with is pretty much just a large green "L".
2) After having your L for a year, you can do your N (New Driver's) test. This is a practical test; you drive around with an instructor for like 30-40 mins while they test you on multiple skill sets. + Show Spoiler +It's actually quite hard for some people, and the instructors range heavily in how hard they test. First two times I had the same douchebag ex-military guy who flunked me at a 4-way stop. I had the right of way, but the guy across from me pulled a rolling stop and decided to go just as I was going. 2nd time I made a whole bunch of small rolling stops with the same guy, aced everything else, and still failed. 3rd try I got a chick and aced everything except I parked in 1st gear w/ ebrake on a down hill slope instead of reverse w. ebrake. With your N you can only have 1 passenger, but can drive without an adult w/ full license in the car. You have to display a magnetic sign on the back of your car with is pretty much just a large green "N". This is what I have now. I could have gone for my class 5 license last year, but the test is $75 and the new license when you pass is another $35. Combine that with potentially failing the first time and it's actually kind of pricey. I only really need to drive myself anyway.
3) Once you've had your N for TWO years, you go in for another practical test to get your class 5 license (full license for commercial vehicles).

I'd go --> Headphones, wing night, traffic ticket and rent.. in that order Yeah, you're right about the license. Described above in detail.
The monthly student loan amounts are only like $25/month, and I don't have to start paying them until I've been out of school for 4 months. I have like 7-8k in loans, so obviously it would take a long long time to pay with just the minimum payments, as well as I'd pay twice as much in interest over that time, but it shouldn't take long to pay off once I get my full time job in the next couple months.

Live a little The sweet thing I have is our family friend who does our taxes free of charge. They're really really nice people, and I feel kind of guilty by not paying them anything, but they insist on doing it for free, so meh. I'm probably going to stop by sometime in the near future and give them some kind of gift in return though ^^

Ok, thanks. The signs sound like a pain in the ass and pointless, except for bringing in a little extra revenue.

It's really common to have your N sign stolen by people. Then you don't notice it's missing if you don't check every day and suddenly get fined for not displaying it ($107).
A friend joked about stealing mine recently since he was saying mine hasn't been stolen in a long time, but I think he was actually serious now.

Just save it and use for booze, food and rent supplement. Leftovers if you can't get FT work for some reason. Isn't college pretty cheap in Canada??
|
It can vary pretty heavily from different campuses, but the average tuition per semester is about $2000-2400 depending on the program, with another $500~ on books and other fees. So each year is probably between $5000-6000 for a regular course load. Mine is probably one of the more inexpensive ones; the tuition and frees at main university in my city are roughly double that of my college.

That's an expensive friend. I hope he is worth it...

women driver displaying those signs would scare the shit out of me :p
just wanted to chime in to say fuck the government, and fuck taxes

Not just because the test is pretty strict, but they honestly are much more of a threat than the majority of new drivers. I see them run stop signs and break the rules of the road unintentionally all the time because they are delirious, have poor vision, slow reaction time, a combination of them, etc, etc.

Better yet buy it for him, but "accidently" spill it over him. The real test would be if you told him you were fined without asking if he stole your sign. If he doesn't fess up voluntarily, a beer shower is in order. Of course this assume you know he stole it but hey you get to shower someone with beer, what could go wrong?

I'm getting 6.4k back this year... I wish I could spend a dime of it on shit I want. Oh to be young and free again!
Have fun while it lasts! (The old person in me says put it towards your loans... )

Old people are like the best lobbyists ever. No chance in hell a change like that would get through. I agree that they are scary as hell but no chance. What with "victimising the elderly" and "my grandma can't get to the store anymore" and "walker parades" anyone pushing this would be thrown out quick quick.
|
Yeah I'm not expecting it to go through soon if ever, it's just something that always pops in to my mind when someone brings up how reckless and unsafe new drivers are. When I was doing my co-op in Salmon Arm last year an elderly guy backed up off the road on to a picnic bench below the drop and killed the guy sitting there. @_@

Getting a tax return is nice, but if you really look at it objectively, it's not all roses. A tax return means that the tax office has "borrowed" that money interest free from you the entire year.

You gotta go snowboarding at least twice to get the hang of it FYI. My advice would be to save as much of it as possible until you find a full time job but if you're living at home, you can afford to spend some of it

I wouldn't have known any better if I heard I was getting $28.00 back though, so I'm just glad it was more than I thought.

I used to skateboard a little bit years and years ago, so I think my balance is okay.
The plan is to save the majority of it for emergency money in case getting a job takes longer than expected, but I won't hesitate to use some of it either. I don't live at home, but I'm living in a place owned by my dad, so rent is relatively cheap.

Yeah, exactly.
It's nice seeing unexpected money, but if you think about it another way, this could be the result of diligent saving! Certainly I can guarantee that if you're like most people, then these $2,800 would've found a way to disappear over the year if you paid the proper taxes. But since you "never had it", you don't really notice it missing. People spend what they make, that's just how it goes. This is why it's really important for most people to automate saving/deductions from their paycheque if possible for the illusion of making less money. Then you'd be in for a nice surprise at the end of the year when you check the account and go "whoa look at all that dough" without giving free money to the gov't in the process.
That said, congrats! $2,800 is a nice sum, hopefully the actual number comes close (or even higher!) :D
edit: random thought.. I wonder if this could be abused by companies. I recall negative yield bonds being sold in germany, which in essence means you're paying for the privilege of having the gov't hold your money. Couldn't they just pay millions more in taxes and claim a refund later? heh. I'll have to go ask a tax guy, this seems too simple

Ugh, fucking N signs man. How do they work why do we have them. I've had mine stolen before too, and ended up just taping the sign on the inside window out of paranoia over getting pulled over for it.
|
ALL student loan interest is tax deductible. (EDIT- In Canada, assuming you went thru the normal student loan system)
DO NOT use the money on your student loans, you might think you are paying more interest in the long term but infact it will just make that juicy tax return larger every year as you get it all back.
NOM NOM NOM NOM

Sigh... I should probably just do that now. After he gave me the ticket he gave me a new N :S

I never knew that actually. I'll have to make sure to include my pay statements for it in my next tax return, thanks.

In my experience, people usually need to sleep on it overnight to figure it out but maybe you're more gifted or have a better teacher. Regardless, I promise you'll be falling a lot. Learning to snowboard is basically learning how to balance but I think it requires slightly different skill sets compared to skiing or skate boarding. You'll probably learn what I mean when you go. I should be getting a couple of grand for my tax return as well but it's all going to my tuition/living expenses lol
