Hey!

First of I´d like to announce that I will be head admin of the official Starcraft 2 tournament at NärCon 2012. We will host a 15 000 SEK tournament, roughly 1,6k Euro. The event itself takes place between the 26-29th of July

Earlier years NärCon has mostly focused on being a Anime and Manga event for all the fans out there in the nordic area, reaching about 3000 visitors yearly! This year NärCon will in addition add esport to the event schedule and offer a 16 man bracket that will be determined by invites and qualifiers. I have decided to offer 8 people invites which includes travel expenses and hotel and 8 players will qualify through 4 qualifiers and will include the paid entry to the event!
For this first time the players will probably be swe only but I´d love to have GLSnute over so I have to research deeper into the budget and see how much money the board will give me!

The players invited so far:

6/8 invites remain!

Anyway, Im in help of you guys! I would like to have some feedback on the tournament structure that I had in mind! Here it is:

Tournament format:

-Best of 5 single elimination from a 16 player bracket.
-Mappool will consist of five maps so the starting map of each match will also be the ace-map if needed. I´d like to limit the mappool so the players feels comfortable with fewer maps to practice on before the event. Also it helpls to build up a "storyline" for the casters to have some extra material to work with. With fewer maps you can maybe see a pattern of a player in the matches and determine what strats he might use next time
-The matches will be played at the 28th to the 29th of July. I thought that the first day would offer all the matches streamed up to the semifinals and the 29th will feature the finals which will be a BO7 with 2 maps added to the mappool.

Thoughts:

-Ive been thinking about having a double elim bracket to give the players a second chance in the bracket since some of the players has been travelling for up to 5 hours to get to the event. The only bad thing with this alternative is the time limit. I just got these 2 days for the bracket play and with double elim alot of additional matches will appear!
With this single elimination system we will be able to cast every match without having a trouble with time. The players will be able to warmup and practise the entire time at computers so they´re ready when their match begins.

-Will it be too boring for the players to have to wait for their every game? Should I aim to be airing just the first RO16 match and maybe two of the RO8 matches? The total airing time will be less but maybe thats for the best? Since every BO5 will take roughly 60-100 min.

-Have I missed a very important thing? I´ve hosted several online events bit this is my first Offline with a live audience and players will actully be there. Please give me any tips!

Thanks for reading this!

I think maybe for a 16 man tournament double elimination might not be the best way to go, it's takes longer time and is a bit more difficult as an observer to follow imo. I'd personally prefer group play at first (4 groups with 4 players each, top 2 in each group advance to quarterfinals), but if you're going to stick with single elim then i think it's a good idea to have it bo5 matches. It will help compensate for the lack of "second chance" that the players would've had in a double elim format. And of course, it's much more exciting as an observer when everything is at stake at once.

What will the prize breakdown be? If people are travelling long distances, maybe all 16 should recieve prizes? Like:
1st 5000kr
2nd 3000kr
3-4th 1500kr
5-8th 500kr
9-16th 250kr

I mean, if people will have to fight through qualifiers for this, then i think it's only fair to give everyone prize money, even if it's just a small amount

As for the time concern and only airing selected matches, is it possible to have multiple streams/casters? I'd look into that first...

This sounds like it could be a great event, i wish you the best of luck with this!
