The tips I can give you is to not use any of that stuff. I didnt really help me when I quit at all. What helped me was to get a good routine and get up and go out jogging for 30 mins the 4-5 times a week. When I started I was in really bad shape and could only run for 15 mins or so but I pretty much did it every morning for a month and I could feel I got better so that kept me fighitng the cigarettes as well. Who would like to take a cigarette after a 30 min jogging session ?! And who would like to ruin the pain and effort that was put into jogging. Ofcourse, some days I had trouble and in the afternoon I took a cigarette but I realiased that the more I trained the less I smoked and it helped me get rid of it. Make sure you dont have cigarettes at home and if possible that you dont live with a smoker. Also, try to get new routines and maybe you need to avoid the computer for a while if thats where you tend to smoke.

I used tabacco for about 6-7 years and I smoked a pack a day. I took almost a year to quit completly. At first I could only stay away from nicotine for a day or so. Then I could handle a week and then a month. I guess if you challange yourself and is awsome you could do it in one try though!

As a funny side note Im a huge tolkien fan and I use to think that it was sauron that was trying to control my mind by telling me to take a cigarette. Are you as strong as frodo ?

Yeah man, fuck the ring!

Try e-cigs maybe. I have been using them for a bit over 2 weeks now and have went from a pack a day to a pack every 4-5 days.

Edit: Also yes as mentioned above SC2 is going to make you want to smoke a bunch, I'd find a game you can play casually until ur getting somewhere with it.

I'm not playing SC2 THAT much yet and for some time I'm going to be playing even less because I need to find a 2nd job.
I did buy an e-cig but it doesn't make me smoke less and it makes my throat dry as hell.

Sounds like the nicotine addiction may be less of a factor than the actual act of smoking. Perhaps you could try biscuit sticks or a suitable alternative instead. There is a nicotine "cigarette" replacement device but it's quite expensive and (at least locally) only available at a (registered) pharmacy.

I tried the alternatives but I still want to feel that cig. Never heard of the device, I will ask about it.

You may try to program yourself - for example:
1. Get a smell or a food that you find disgusting. Everytime you have a lust for cigarette you also need to "punish" yourself by eating/smelling the thing.
2. After you smoke a cigarette you need to do something - for example 30 pushups.

I need something different, I'm too lazy to do that. Maybe jogging.

You'll always want to smoke. That's just something you have to accept. The longer you quit, the less you'll want them, but it will never really go away completely. My mom told my dad to quit smoking when they started dating, so he quit cold turkey. He basically just stayed grumpy for years and got less and less grumpy over time. If you want a cool, manly story to tell, go that route!

If you ever need some motivation, just remember that if you keep smoking your chances of dying in incredible pain are pretty good! One of the common justifications for smoking is "Well, I'm just cutting off the 10 worst years." That's not quite correct. You're moving forward the 10 worst years and making them much worse. Both my grandparents on my dad's side were smokers and both died early in terrible pain.

Yeah, I'd rather avoid terrible terrible pain.

You just explained how to train a dog sir.
The human brain is too logical to have a action-reaction train of thought.

To the OP: When I quit my motivation was the day I visited my Dads house. I live on the east coast and I have to fly to the west coast whenever I want to see him. I had some time off work (by time off I mean laid off) so I went to visit him. During the night I woke up to hear my father coughing his lungs out. Literally, He was coughing up blood. He's too stubborn to go to the doctor. My Dad has been smoking for 30 years.

Nasty story and another reason why I want to quit but not strong enough to make me just quit without any help.

I would buy an ASUS Titan computer and go to Caribbean. I'm not that poor that I have to decide whether to buy food or cigs but still...

Quit Cold Turkey.

Seriously that's the only reliable option. Just takes a lot of willpower. If you really want to quit then it will work. If you don't really want to quit you will smoke again.

E-Cigs seem like a pretty popular option, you can read about djWheat's experience with em here: The technology behind Quitting Cigarettes (TL.net Blog) and it's pretty convincing.

It likely won't cure your nicotine addiction, that's a tougher ask, but it will certainly help control cravings and isn't as lethal, hopefully won't make you sick after each one either.

And that's the reason I want something more to help me. I want to quit but I don't have the willpower. Maybe I'll start jogging.

I have one, maybe I should buy a liquor with more nicotine in it because it doesn't make want to smoke less.

Read Golden Holocaust. You'll find it here:

http://www.amazon.fr/Golden-Holocaust-Cigarette-Catastrophe-Abolition/dp/0520270169

You feel so much disgust for the sons of bitches who are ruling cigarettes companies since one century that you will rather cut your own hand rather than touch one of their product ever again.

Few things to give you a taste. In the 50's, when scientist have discovered the link between smoking and cancer, the bosses of the five biggest cigarettes companies have met in a cafe in Brooklyn to discuss how to prevent this discovery to spread. It is estimated that with propaganda in the culture businesses and plain corruption of many scientists they have delayed public knowledge for ten years. If you look at the graphs, you can estimate the cost of what they did that day to 8 million lives in ten years. That's more than the fucking Nazi genocides.

You also learn that tobacco kills more than wars, malaria, AIDS and terrorism put together? Yep, that's right.

I read this book the other day, and I just threw my cigarette pack. Because what you learn there is fucking gross.

I would have told you you should try snus but it might be illegal in poland... joke laws :p I didn't even particularly want to quit smoking but once i started using snus my will to smoke went away in a matter of weeks or maybe a month or so. Not everyone is the same though but i would suggest you try some nicotine substitute you will still want to smoke but at least getting your nicotine fix will spare you the feeling annoyed as hell part so it will be easier^^ lots of coffee might help those times when you feel particularly in need, allthough it's more like duct tape than a permanent solution.

I smoked continiously for 10 years before I quit. I tried slowly lowering the amount of cigarettes I smoke, but that doesn't work. Frankly, the nicotine addiction isn't the problem, it's the habit of doing the motions with your hands. Your body should be able to get rid of any nicotine residue in a day, and recover from the withdrawal in one additional day. Maybe a bit more, if you're older. Your best bet is to quit cold turkey and find something that keeps your hands busy... like playing a lot of computer games? It worked for me. Incidentally, I've stopped chewing my fingernails as well

I have to say, the biggest hurdle to pass was not smoking when drinking, since I've never drank anything without having a ciggarete. Most people over here smoke as well, so whenever you're drinking, you get tons of smoke on you, and it's a bit hard to resist. That's down to self-control more or less.

And to be completetly honest, I haven't quit at 100%, but it's been 10 months since I quit, and for that duration I've only smoked 3 cigarettes and 2 cigars (which were at a wedding).

So yeah, you just have to quit, at least from my experience that's the only thing that works.

Edit: About e-cigs: don't bother. If you really want to quit, they'll help you about as much as starting to smoke lighter cigarettes.

Remember that every time you buy a cigarette, you are giving your hard-earned cash to some unscrupulous fuck who would, will and does happily kill you and anybody else just to fill their wallet. The whole industry of it makes me feel sick, and I've never even touched a cigarette.

Why do people nowadays need the easiest way out for every problem.. if you really want to get away of it get some balls and throw your cigs away and set a mindset to never touch it again. The easiest way is mostly the least effective one...My father and my grandpa did it that way..they smoked for 40 years, then stopped from one day to another and never touched a cigarette again.. if they can do it, you can do it to...if you can't make it, you probably dont wanna stop smoking.

Maybe a little help....at least it helped me a bit: think of it, you don't wanna be controlled by freakin little cigarette, which costs about nothing, and you for sure don't wanna be killed because of a freaking little cigarette which are there for no other reason than to make you addicted and bring the tabacco industry more money, where certain people will get your money. It is just a cigarette... nothing more, nothing less.

Good thing for your dad and his dad. Fact of the matter is that you have no idea of what youre talking about so dont say "just throw them away". Its simply just not possible for a lot of people. Maybe your dad had it easy? I didnt have it THAT tough but it took me several months and LOTS of energy. I was able to create a quite stress-free enviorment during this time and Im pretty sure thats why I was able to do it. Im not sure it would even have been possible to do working full time etc.

It's pretty interesting but it doesn't move me enough, honestly. We live in times of suing cigarette companies and multi million compensations for those who got cancer so it's not like justice haven't been served to those fucks. Really.

I have no idea. My father has smoked for 35 years and has had two heart attacks yet we both smoke. My sister smokes etc

I smoke a pack a day. I have pneumonia right now so I can't! I doubt I'll quit. I want to but not bad enough apparently. Thanks for this thread. I'll be reading!

I need to update my article as I believe there are now better eCIG solutions that have helped myself and others really kick the habit!

Chew a fuckload of gum, thats what my friend who was addicted did and it helped ALOT. The sugar in gum is naturally healthy for you and it keeps your mouth occupied. Try citrus flavors

@op thats exactly the logic i mean. everytime u get a craving to smoke, think of the thing u really want to buy. and just throw that money into a collection to reward urself with that asus computer instead of n packs of cigs. like a swear jar
