A fanfic-- because it's my 800th post and I want to show off my horrific photoshop skills.
It's midnight-- time to go.
As HayprO sprinted through the winding paths, flanked by dark trees on either side, he could almost hear the hissing and spitting of those blood-sucking vipers behind him. He closed his eyes and ran harder, trusting his intuition and need to survive to get him back to camp safely.
Suddenly, he heard a piercing screech; he felt a rushing wind on either side of him, and there was a smell of rotting flesh. Without opening his eyes, he knew what it was: the Vampires.
He stopped abruptly, and opened his eyes. He noticed at first glance that the two Vampires were NaNiWa and Day9. He raised his head to the inky-black night and opened his mouth in a warcry, veritably unhinging his jaw and sucking the universe into that massive, gaping chasm. As he channeled his energy, a beam of light pierced the foggy blackness, illuminating HayprO in a shower of heavenly beams. His strength renewed, his energy peaked, HayprO knew he had only seconds.
He blasted a Kamayamaya into NaNiWa, sweeping him off his feet and slamming him into the dense forestry behind him. The trees began to envelope the Swedish Vampire, and he struggled to fight free. Losing no time, HayprO flew at Day9, showering him with punches and kicks at bullet speed until he was a bloody mass on the ground. HayprO swiftly turned around, intending to finish off NaNiWa, but was hit suddenly across the face with a round-house kick. NaNiWa had struggled free from the trees, and his blow send HayprO sprawling. Knowing the woods would soon be flooded with Vampires, HayprO blasted off into the night, flying back to camp, the only illumination in an otherwise pitch-black sky.
The First Confrontation
The camp woke with the dawn the next day. HayprO moved quickly to the walls of the make-shift fort in Seoul, relieving the guards and taking his turn to watch for any signs of Day-Vampires. HayprO reflected bitterly that the Vampires were evolving quickly, dispelling all misconceptions of Darwinian Evolution, and breeding. He almost laughed as he thought of all the poor, ignorant fools who were blinded into thinking they couldn't evolve at will. A few years ago, the Pokemon Theory was the biggest break-through in science. Now there was no science-- not here-- not anywhere from Eastern China to San Francisco. They called it the Dark Zone now.
He remembered the discovery-- remembered how Jeremy Lin had emerged from that cave in South America with those glowing stones-- the Philosopher's Stone-- that's what they had named it. He remembered hearing that as soon as these stones were exposed to light, they slowly began absorbing it as energy, as if they were learning photosynthesis. He remembered how this led to the countless studies, trillions of dollars and the months and years of work before the Pokemon Theory was postured. After it was, however, everything changed.
Oooooh shiny...
To evolve was difficult, or so it was said. It required great prowess of mind, concentration strength of character, determination, and coordination. Only the perfect balance of mind and body could consciously evolve. Naturally, professional StarCraft players were the first to succeed. HayprO remembered that one of two general paths was followed by every gamer, but couldn't remember how each path began. Perhaps it was a gamer's natural affinity for darkness and night that led to Path of the Vampire; perhaps the original gamers who chose that path were inherently evil; or perhaps Vampires are just really badass and not everything has to necessarily make perfect logical sense in a fanfic... *cough* ... anyway. The Path of the Vampire was a terrible, evil, and most assuredly badass expansion of power through evolution. The first few to choose that path were Destiny, Illusion, and all of Evil Geniuses. Soon after followed the foreign side of FXO, and half of coL (CatZ, Minigun, goswer, and qxc).
The other path of evolution that eventually followed was the Path of the Saiyan. Only the most righteous and well-intentioned gamers had the power to evolve through this path and the discipline to stay from the Vampires. This path was originally followed by Day9 and Tastosis, Team Liquid, and every Korean Team ever except for TSL for some reason. This path began with photosynthesis. Gamers learned to harness the energy of the sun, to store it for up to eighteen hours, and to use it to their advantage in supernatural ways.
On the other hand, the Path of the Vampire began through stealth and supernatural strength. Gamers began by altering their genes to blend in with darkness. This made them veritable assassins when it was dark. In daylight, Vampires were incredibly vulnerable to the solar-powered Saiyans, but all that was beginning to change. The most recent development in the Vampires was that of the leech. Vampires had learned to harvest a diminished version of the powers of Saiyans, simultaneously imbuing them with strength, and injecting Saiyans with Vampire genes, turning affected Saiyans into Vampires too.
This had proved a problem for the Saiyans. Their numbers had substantially diminished since the onslaught of the Vampires. The Saiyan powers that imbued the Day-Vampires were not yet effective enough to be used offensively against natural Saiyans, but it gave Day-Vampires a built-in resistance to Saiyan's solar energy.
HayprO was joined shortly after taking his post by fOrGG and Sheth, both of whom had been hunting the evening before as well. The Saiyans ultimate goal was to find the central infestation of the Vampires in the Dark Zone and to eradicate it. After six weeks of searching, Saiyan Central pinned the location as somewhere in Seoul of the former state of South Korea. The central infestations were always invisible during daylight hours, giving the Vampires an inherent defender's advantage while the Saiyans tried to attack. The optimal time for Saiyans to search for the central infestation was between 8pm and midnight, when they had the most energy stored, and thus more powerful weapons to use. After midnight, Saiyans were at their most vulnerable.
Suddenly a flash of yellow streaked beside HayprO's face, nearly taking his head off. He looked down at the source of the light and saw CatZ, standing side by side with Day9, who had a faint glow about him, and who was smirking slightly. Thirty more Vampires emerged silently from various features of the landscape, including NaNiWa, who's arm had been reattached to his body, and IdrA, who was floating several feet of the ground. IdrA raised his arm, and signaled to the rest. HayprO ducked just in time as thirty more jets of light flew at them. HayprO ducked just in time, but Sheth and fOrGG weren't so lucky. Both of them were hit by one or two jets of light, and both tumbled to the ground, unconscious.
HayprO knew subconsciously that he had to raise the alarm. He was still drained from the night before, but he was ready to fight to the death. He raised his arms, looked to the sky, and called upon the power of light. He flew in the air, dodging jets of light being thrown at him by the newly-evolved and infinitely more dangerous hybrid Day-Vampires.
MUST... GET... TO... NAZGUL!!!
Somewhere within him, HayprO always knew this day would come-- that the Vampires would somehow harness the power of sunlight to its fullest potential, and that they would be unstoppable thereafter. He would not give up however; he shot jets of light back at the advancing Hybrid Day-Vampires, and three fell. A jet of Vampire light grazed his shoulder, burning through his t-shirt and singing his skin.
He shot down towards Nazgul's tent, but was halted by TLO, who had gone off on a search and destroy mission for the Saiyans a week back and hadn't been seen since. TLO blocked HayprO's course, throwing punch after punch and kick after kick at HayprO, who struggled to deflect the onslaught. He managed to tear himself free only after scoring a lucky headbutt to TLO's face. He zoomed towards the tent, streaks of light still whizzing past. He was almost there, flying just to the tip of the threshold of the house before being blindsided by what felt like a dump truck and slammed against a wall.
It was IdrA. HayprO lifted his head to see the Hybrid Day-Vampire, laughing and holding what looked like a ball of fire. He looked around the campsite; the Vampires had breached the walls, and were tearing apart the entire camp. The alarm hadn't fully been raised; there was mass confusion. HayprO saw Saiyans falling left and right without a fight, and he knew it was too late. The camp would succumb to the Vampire infestation, and the last ray of hope in the Dark Zone would be extinguished. He saw the fire in IdrA's hand, and knew the end had come about.
Do it.
