With the start of the 2nd day of the round of 16 we saw yet another terran fan favorite take the stage in SlayerS_MMA. Would it be yet another let down for the legions of fans that the top korean terrans garner? or would MMA provide a little retribution after the poor showing by MVP only one day ago.

This group also saw the first protoss of the round of 16 showcase their abilities? Would they be able to stand up to the powerhouse terran that occupy the group with them?

The first match saw BoxeR's protege MMA take on one of the finest korean protoss players from FXOpen, Oz.

The first game on Bel'Shir beach proved to be a bit unexpected with Oz opening up with 2 early gateways; 1 in his main base and the 2nd at the 3rd base location of MMA. Oz goes for a stalker at the proxy gate while running his first zealot down from his main.
Oz attacked up the main ramp with the first stalker and zealot reaching the ramp before MMA's bunker was able to finish and picking off the scv constructing it. This was followed up by 1 additional zealot from the main and stalkers reinforcing from the proxy gate until 4 stalkers total were out. MMA tried to be tricky and block the natural of Oz with an engineering bay during the attack but Oz just decided to place his nexus down at the 3rd base location. The bunker would finish but by that time Oz simply ran by and began wreaking havok on the natural of MMA and whatever units he ran out there. Oz had exceptional micro on his 4 stalkers and that alone was enough to cause MMA to leave the game.

The second game, on Crossfire, MMA's map of choosing was much more of a straight-forward affair. MMA opened with 1 rax into gas as Oz decided to go a more conventional gateway, assimilator, cyber core. MMA decided to go with an early tech lab and some marauder pressure from his 1 barracks, placing an expansion down behind it. Oz made the mistake of getting a little too close to MMA's ramp with his first stalker and the initial 2 marauders of MMA were able to catch it and kill it. This triggered MMA to push towards the base of Oz with the few units he had in an attempt to get a quick win. When MMA reaches the natural of Oz he makes the mistake of targetting the nexus while he starts consctructing a bunker; this gives Oz time to get his units together and pull some probes for the defense. The bunker is unable to finish and Oz gets very nice surrounds on the marauders with the pulled probes and defends after only losing a single worker in a display of excellent micro.
Oz follows up the successful defense by dropping a robo after his 2nd and 3rd gateways while MMA retreats home with his tail between his legs and upgrades stim.

Oz begins to place pylons all over the map, giving him exceptional vision. He is looking to go very gateway heavy with double upgrades and blink. Meanwhile, MMA is getting upgrades himself while dropping all over trying to clean up the pylons that Oz earlier placed. In doing so MMA is too predictable in his movements and Oz is able to catch the full medivac and easily snipe it right of the center. Oz begins storm at the 13:20 mark and continues to push his upgrade advantage while MMA catches up a bit by starting 2-2. MMA is finally able to get a drop into the main base of Oz, but he only manages to get a few SCV kills and unpower an unused robo. Oz then makes an addtional robo at his natural which appears to be a mistake as he was not even using the one just unpowered in his main.

An engagement in the middle of the map shows Oz with a much better army, though ghosts are now on the field. After a bit of harassment at the 3rd base mineral line of MMA, Oz decides to return home mostly intact. At this time MMA has a small drop at the third of Oz, Oz could have easily defended it but it turns out he is supply blocked and has just warped in from all his available gateways. MMA is able to focus down the nexus before reinforcements arrive thus securing him a nice lead.
As this is going on, Oz neglects starting his 3-3 upgrades allowing MMA to catch up in that regard also. The finishing blow occurs when MMA gets into the natural area of Oz and lands some decent emps, Oz attempts to counter attack the natural of MMA, and MMA holds it off. The game ends with Oz throwing out the GG.

The final game of the first match was on Oz's map choice of Entombed Valley. This game saw MMA open with a 1 rax expand, he would go on to throw down 3 additional rax before gas, as Oz went with the 1 gate expo. Oz then adds 2 more gates and throws down a proxy pylon.

MMA gets his 3rd command center before taking his first two geysers at 6:45. For some reason Oz tries to put on a little bit of pressure at the natural ramp with only 1 stalker and 4 sentries and is forced to pull back. Oz controls very poorly and pays little attention to his just-attacking force and MMA is able to walk right up to the sentries in the middle of the map and kill two of them for absolutely nothing.
After that blunder, Oz goes for double forge and they complete at 8:30. He again goes for the quick double upgrade play with a twilight council for blink on the way.

MMA begins to mix marauders into his composition seeing only gateway units. Meanwhile Oz throws down the templar archives at 11:00 and finally gets a 3rd base down at 12:00, but MMA's third is already fully functional.

Our terran hero decides to load up a drop and move out to the center of the map. He drops the 3rd base and ends up doing very minimal damage. Though, during the drop MMA begins to push the front with ghosts now in his army. He catches all the high templar with an excellent emp underneath a scan and MMA runs over the rest of his army.
While Oz appeared to be in an excellent position after game 1, it looked like he just let his nerves get the best of him. That allowed MMA the room that he needed to squeak out a win. He didnt do anything spectacular. He just played solid and let Oz make mistakes.

The second match would be another PvT with SlayerS_Puzzle taking on oGs_SuperNova.

The first map would be Daybreak. SuperNova opened up by hiding his first rax at his own natural, but Puzzle quickly locates it and goes nexus first. SuperNova then decides to put down a command center of his own and get double gas. After starting the command center and when his gas allows SuperNova then puts down his factory and takes his 3rd gas at the 6 minute mark. SuperNova goes for a very quick siege mode, starting it at 6:30. At the same time he gets a tech lab on his starport and begins producing a raven. He takes his 4th gas at 7:45. Puzzle, meanwhile, goes for double forge at the 8 minute mark.

Puzzle manages to get an observer near the base of SuperNova, but SuperNova and his raven along with 3 marines make quick work of it. At the 9 minute mark SuperNova goes for an addtional starport with a tech lab, and begins producing banshees 2 at a time. Puzzle goes for Colossi and he manages to finally get an observer into the base of SuperNova seeing both the starports as SuperNova moves out.

Puzzle immidiately beings to drop 2 cannons at his natural and he gets a stargate. The push reaches Puzzle's natural ramp and Puzzle uses all of his chrono to get out phoenix as fast as possible. SuperNova sees the phoenix and starts viking production. Puzzle has enough and tries for the first time to push out and break the contain. It turns out to be a pretty even trade and SuperNova stays put in his position. However, Puzzle takes a significant supply lead.
After the battle, Puzzle is able to snipe a raven with his remaining phoenix. Puzzle waits a bit longer to mass up units and pushes out to break the contain, forcing SuperNova to leave the game.

For the second game SuperNova chose Crossfire. Puzzle decides to open with a 1 gate, robo. SuperNova goes with tricks puzzle by getting a refinery but not mining from it and bunkering in his main base, he then makes two more barracks and an expansion.

Nothing major takes place, Puzzle gets out a couple of immortals as SuperNova checks the watch towers. Puzzle moves up towards the natural of SuperNova, but the defense of SuperNova is immaculate with two bunkers and stim done with medivacs on the way.

Puzzle doesn't care. He charges in with 3 immortals and easily takes down the first bunker before backing up for a moment and reinforcing.
Next, he targets down the 2nd bunker with really nice forcefields and manages to clean up the rest of the SuperNova army. He retains his excellent position by forcing the command center to lift and charging up the ramp.
It was a very nicely prepared build and attack for Puzzle and SuperNova simply could not handle it.

The winner's match Left MMA to faceoff with his teammate Puzzle for the first spot in the round of 8.

The first map would be Metropolis, where MMA would open with a proxy barracks in the center of the map. Puzzle had the opportunity to scout it was their workers passed by eachother at a much eariler time than a protoss would normally expect. With not seeing it Puzzle decides to go for a 1 gate, cyber core, into double gas.

MMA gets to the base of Puzzle with his first marine and an scv and places down an excellent bunker. Unfortunately, for him, the probes are able to kill the marines before it finishes or it would have perhaps been GG right there. MMA makes due with 4 early-game probe kills.
After the attack, MMA returns home where he finds his freshly placed, shiny new command center. He also decides to bunker at his natural.

Puzzle goes for a 4 gate in response. MMA nearly gets an scv into the base of Puzzle to scout it, but Puzzle forcefields his own ramp in order to keep the scv out, basically telling MMA everything he needed to know.

Puzzle attacks a bit later into MMA's natural and is able to take the first bunker down but that is all and Puzzle dies.

[b]Game 2]/b] on Daybreak proved to be more of a battle. Puzzle looked for a nexus first as MMA went for a 1 rax, expand.

MMA tried to meta-game Puzzle quite hard by hiding his initial barracks just out of view in his main and also hiding two scvs behind his mineral line, in an attempt to make puzzle think there was some serious proxy action going on. Puzzle, however, was much too swift and saw the scvs so they had to return to mining. MMA does not care, he puts down a 3rd command center before taking any gas. Puzzle chooses to go with a 1 gate, robo with 2 gas, into 2 more gateways. Next he takes the two gasses at his natural.

Puzzle goes for double forge and adds 3 more gates as they finish. A twilight council is also added.

MMA goes up to 6 rax as both players just take it easy. MMA chooses to try to take his 3rd base in the middle of the map and their armies clash for a brief moment before MMA is required to retreat back home with his army and base. Puzzle chases MMA all the way back into his natural area, and with some excellent forcefields looks to be able to kill a lot of MMA's army. Too bad for Puzzle though as MMA uses some nifty medivac micro and saves the units before too many die.
Puzzle doesnt give up quite yet; with another round of warp ins joining the fray, he destroys MMA's rocks and tries to attack the bunker line again. However only one bunker falls and he is obligated to retreat. During the retreat he manages to get his 3rd nexus and robo support bay.

MMA once again tries to take the center of the map with his 3rd orbital, and this time he is successful. At this time he also decides a 4th base at his normal 3rd is a nice option. MMA then scans his army and kills a nearby zealot near the watch tower before loading up 2 medivacs to drop the main of Puzzle, just to illustrate his polished playstyle. Too bad for MMA however, as Puzzle has a pylon that spots the drop right outside his base. With nice reaction time he is able to snipe the drop with only a few units being deployed. At the same time MMA looks to push the natural of Puzzle with his remaining forces but is denied.

Puzzle goes for the templar archives and MMA begins ghost cloaking and starts 3-3 aswell as +1 ship weapons. Theres a big engagement at the 3rd of Puzzle with zealot colossi and a few stalkers against the mmm ball of MMA. 3 ghosts are in the mix, but the emps are not that effective. The colossi are straggling behind the army and MMA is exhibiting some very nice stutter-step micro. Puzzle still forces him back.
MMA scurries home to the center to join with his other forces, this allows Puzzle to put down his 4th base.

Puzzle warps in 9 templars and turnes 8 of them into archons. Meanwhile, MMA starts researching a nuke and moebius reactor along with +2 ship weapons.

At 20 minutes both players are nearing maxed out and there is a large engagement in the center of the map where MMA forces Puzzle's army back. MMA attempts to nuke the 3rd of Puzzle, but he notices swiftly and retreats with his probes. 3-3 is finished for MMA and he starts building armor as he places down 3 more starports.

Puzzle puts down a 5th at 5 o'clock and both players hold their half of the map.

The armies end up clashing in the center and the colossi are simply too powerful for MMA to handle, despite his massive viking cloud, as a majority of the vikings die to the archons of Puzzle.
This proves to be the decisive battle in the game, Puzzle takes a 40 supply lead, remakes a significant amount of lost units and pushes the 3rd, causing GG.

After losing a long game in game number 2 was MMA going to be comfortable playing a longer game again in game 3 on Crossfire?

MMA went with a 1 rax refinery opening as our protoss hero went for the standard 1 gate, gas, cyber core, then opted for a 2nd gas. MMA builds 1 marauder and then pulls scvs off of gas to get down an earlier command center and 1 additional rax before returning to gas. He adds another rax in a bit bringing the total to 3, as Puzzle gets a gateway followed by a robo.

MMA gets a quick +1 after starting stim and continues to produce 2 marines and 1 marauder at a time while moving up to take the northern most watch tower. Puzzle moves up towards MMA's army and MMA is forced to pull back, though he is unable to save everything due to some nice forcefields chopping up a few units in the center.

MMA has 4 bunkers in the front of his natural as he knows Puzzle is trying to duplicate the immortal bust he used in his first games against SuperNova.

Puzzle waits for the 3rd immortal to join his army at the natural area of MMA and pushes at the bunker wall, removing all of the bunkers. Unfortunately Puzzle is now out of forcefields and MMA is allowed to retreat up the ramp into his main base.
After the mostly successful bust an observer joins Puzzle's army; he picks off what he can at the front of MMA's main base while continuing to add gateways as well as a robo support bay in his main. He goes home and waits for colossi.

MMA tries to get a command center down at 8 o'clock and turtle in his base in an attempt to get back into the game. Puzzle still retains a 30 supply lead unfortunately. Drops by MMA do light damage in the main of Puzzle taking out a few scvs and some stalkers.

The final battle occurs when Puzzle tries to take the main army of MMA in the center of the map. MMA retreats to his natural, but the amount of units coupled with the splash damage that Puzzle's army can exude is too much for MMA to handle.
MMA has to concede the 1st place nod to his teammate to the surprise of many.

The losers match would pit Oz against SuperNova to see who would fall to the Code A round of 24.

The first game would be played on Metropolis and it showed Oz opening standard with SuperNova going for 1 rax into refinery and a factory before command center attempting a 1-1-1.

Oz decides to get a second gas then a robo and an expansion before throwing down his 2nd and 3rd gates.

The first attack comes from SuperNova with a 3 hellion drop into the mineral line of Oz. the drop ends up doing a serious amount of damage killing a total of 12 workers at the 7:30 mark.

After the drop SuperNova moves out with his army and 8+ scvs, Oz looks mostly dead. SuperNova sieges up the main base and Oz brings 5 stalkers around the back of SuperNova's army to cut off reinforcements for a bit and prepare for an eventual flank. Oz goes for the surrounding attack with 1 immortal, 10 stalkers, 2 sentries, and 2 zealots. The initial engagement goes very well for Oz, as he kills all of the tanks and marines with minimal casualties.
The three banshees in the mix prove to be a nuisance however, getting a stalker kill and continuing to harass probes. SuperNova does make the mistake of poorly controlling the banshees whilst reinforcing his push and he loses 2 banshees to stalkers as he skirts around the sides of Oz's base.

SuperNova again sieges up, this time outside of Oz's natural. Oz will have none of it this time and he miraculously is able to clean up the tanks and few marines with very low casualties, resulting in a 24-16 worker advantage.

The second push of SuperNova comes at 15:00. Oz bides his time until he chooses to strike. SuperNova is able to take down 2 gateways, with his now 4 banshees and siege tank volleys from the low ground. SuperNova carelessly then allows his banshees to stray into stalker fire in the main base of Oz, losing one, and triggering Oz's attack once his second immortal pops. Oz has almost no problem cleaning up the push and SuperNova leaves the game.

Game 2 was a quicker affair on Bel'shir Beach. SuperNova went with a 2 rax and 1 gas as Oz went for the typical opening and added a 2nd gas.

Oz scouts early on and sees no expansion. As a result, instead of planting down a nexus, which he planned to do, he changes his mind and throws down 2 gateways. Unfortunately, that is not enough and the late reactions of Oz allow SuperNova to get into his base and begin doing damage. Oz has just a single pylon powering all of his gateways and his cybercore. All of the buildings become unpowered when SuperNova destroys the pylon.
After the pylon falls he kills 14 workers and the game basically ends there.

Our third game took us to Daybreak. Oz went for a 2 gas opening and SuperNova 1 rax expanded. SuperNova attempts to hide a 3rd command center at the 5 o'clock position before adding 2 addtional barracks and Oz puts down a 3rd after his natural aswell.

SuperNova ends up with a very quick scout of the 3rd base of Oz. The hidden base of SuperNova goes unnoticed. A bunker is then built by SuperNova outside of the building vision of Oz's third and a squad of 6 marines is sent to attack the base. Oz is able to save the base after it is down to 1/4 health. As the harassment was taking place Oz was able to get a scout on the hidden third of SuperNova and a pylon was placed near the base causing the command center to lift and return home.

Oz gets a pylon down near the natural of SuperNova and begins to pressure it with 4 gates. Oz attacks and in a display of some pretty poor micro does not target down the 3 bunkers of SuperNova individually; as a result some good scv repairing is able to hold the last bunker and SuperNova defends.
After the barely failed attack Oz hangs around for a little bit with his remaining forces and warps in a few more units to protect the sentry heavy composition he is currently working with. He decides attacking would be a mistake and decides to go home.

Behind the attack Oz adds 6 gates at one time at 12:00. This brings him up to 10 on 3 bases. He also begins psi storm and 2-2.

SuperNova is able to float his 3rd command center to the 3rd base location as he attempts to build a 4th base in the center of the map. Storm finishes and Zealot charge is about half done as Oz pokes around the map finding the 4th base and forcing it to cancel.

SuperNova gets his ghosts out at 15:00 and the armies equalize. Oz is however already getting a robo support bay and he attacks the 3rd base with impeccable forcefields. He traps an insane amount of SuperNovas forces and gets off a storm or two, but with a very clutch medivac pickup, SuperNova is able to save a large amount of the units and drop them behind the forcefields. As soon as they are unloaded however, more storms come down upon the units and SuperNova loses a majority of his army, and along with it the game.

The final matchup of the day would be a rematch of the very first game. MMA against Oz. Would Oz be able to control his nerves this time? Or would MMA crush him like delicious red pepper on a pizza?

Game 1 on Antiga Shipyard had Oz open standard with 1 gate, robo, into expand as MMA opened up with 1 rax, gas into reactor hellion expand.

MMA gets only 2 hellions before switching the factory to a tech lab to begin very early siege tank production. Oz plays it cool and walls out the hellions with pylons and gateways as they try to charge up for some tasty probe kills.

A hidden expansion is placed down by MMA at 5 o'clock and siege mode begins. MMA also adds some extra barracks as Oz begins immortal production at 8:30. MMa stops tank production after 2 and uses the factory to make addons for additional barracks while starting 1-1 on his newly produced engineering bays.

Oz gets a warp prism after his 2nd immortal and it appears he will go for a bust. MMA's army is out and about on the map and Oz gets some free shots at retreating marines as MMA returns to his base. The rest of Oz's army soon follows the stalkers and Oz tries to bust up the natural ramp of MMA. The bunkers of MMA are not quite finished and both tanks are killed quite quickly. The fight continues as Oz is able to get some nice forcefields and kill scvs that are trying to repair and tank damage to the tune of 40 worker kills.
The hidden expansion of MMA is the only thing keeping him in the game as of now and a beautiful bunch of forcefields take out the remaining scvs in the main along with a nice chunk of army.

MMA is down 40 supply in the background colossi are on the way and everyone is waiting for Oz to scout the hidden base. He does. It is stopped. and Oz wins the game.

MMA chose Bel'shir Beach for game two. He decided to open with 1 rax expand before gas and oz gets the usual. Oz tricks MMA slightly by making it look like he is doing the same build from the first game of the day. He sends his first two zealots and forces MMA to pull some scvs along with his marines to handle the situation. MMA makes his command center in his base while getting a bunker at the natural and all ends up being well. Oz does get a scout zealot in to see that there is no expansion down at the natural yet before retreating, this causes him to place down 2 more gateways in his main base as his expansion finishes.

MMA gets a scv scout into the base of Oz to see the nexus and 3 gateways and he decides to put down 2 engineering bays for double upgrades. He starts 1-1 and stim as Oz gets an observer into the base to see the armory being put down near the engineering bays. Oz has a single forge upgrading +1 weapons and a twilight council just finishing to start blink at 9:40.

MMA starts 2-2 as 1-1 is done and Oz adds 4 more gateways in his main for a total of 7 on 2 base.

Templar archives is started as he finally adds a second forge once +1 armor is started. He catches a drop in the lower left of the map with his stalkers but a drop in the upper right does a little bit of damage to some pylons.

A third base is landed by MMA at 9 o'clock and he begins morphing a planetary. Oz is forced to return to his base as MMA's 2-2 upgrades finish.

Storm finishes for Oz just as ghosts are being produced. Oz gets off some nice forcefields and picks off a big chunk of MMA's army near the watchtower at MMA's third base. Oz loses most of his forces too, but overall it is a very even trade.

Oz starts colossus tech at 15:00 as MMA is looking to double drop in the main base. He gets the drop in but it does very minimal damage; MMA loses some forces and a medivac before retreating.

A warp prism is finished by Oz and the high templar are loaded in it.

This is where it goes wrong for our protoss buddy. He has a vast majority of his zealots and sentires on move command and loses 6 sentires and a group of zealots to the army of MMA, allowing MMA to take a significant lead.
3-3 and ship weapons +1 finish for MMA as he goes in for the kill. colossi die easily and while Oz tries to get some nice storms down MMA handles it splendidly. Reinforcements arrive and Oz has to leave the game.

The final game of the day would be on Daybreak to decide if MMA would join his fellow terran, MVP, down in the depths of code a round of 24.

Oz stays on 1 base with the standard opening and MMA goes for a 1 rax expand. Oz scouts the quick command center from MMA and forgoes his cyber core and pulls probes out of gas for a moment to get his natural nexus down as soon as possible. MMA tries to bunker the nexus in but it is quickly scouted by Oz and no damage is caused. The two gases are taken by MMA as he gets his 2nd and 3rd barracks as per usual as we charge headlong into the mid-game.

Oz gets a pylon down in between the natural and 3rd bases of MMA and he decides to go for a little 3 gate pressure. 2 bunkers at MMA's natural make it pretty easy to hold though, and Oz decides to put down a 3rd nexus after dancing around MMA's natural for a bit. Meanwhile, the reactor starport begins production for MMA.

MMA decides to double drop when the first two medivacs come out. Oz spots the drop with a probe and warps in a few units in his main but his other gateways are on cooldown and his main army is severely out of position. The pylon powering 2 of Oz's gates goes down and MMA looks to be heading straight for the round of 8, getting some sentires at Oz's ramp and getting out with a full medivac.
After the drop MMA retains a slight supply lead and he moves around the map taking out multiple pylons placed here and there for vision.

MMA moves to take the center of the map with a planetary fortress as his first few ghosts hit the battlefield. Oz finishes storm as MMA spots his army in the center of the map and is able to chase down a full energy sentry and then continue to attack towards the 3rd of Oz.

MMA gets a very nice emp off and Oz blinks right into MMA's army. Oz pulls probes and mma is able to escape with a small marauder, marine force and 2 medivacs after doing some very nice damage to the 3rd.
Moebius reactor is on the way as the ghost count grows, though storms and templar are now on the field for Oz.

Another 2 medivac drop comes into the main of Oz by MMA and Oz is able to get off a nice feedback and pick off 1 of the medivacs before any damage can really be done. During the drop Oz happens to find a nice juicy chunk of mmm in the center with a serious amount of zealots, and while it looks like the zealots should win easily, the mmm comes out on top slightly.

MMA gets some very nice emps and snipes off the high templar at the 3rd base of Oz and then goes in with his army and Oz loses a substantial amount of units. Then, he decides to forgo attacking the 3rd to push right up into the natural of Oz. MMA takes out the robo support bay and Oz can really do nothing to him.
MMA snipes off the templar archives and it is only a moment before Oz realizes his defeat.

MMA outplayed Oz in the second match of theirs. I certainly, however, feel that Oz outplayed MMA in the first match and if he would have been able to keep his nerves in check he could have eliminated one of the favorites of this tournament.
