Recently I got bored of proleague and Mafia and while wondering what to do with my spare time, I remembered that a friend had helped me download Team Fortress 2 at a lan over a year ago. Why not give it a go I thought?

After a few hours with bots I jumped into the fray on a random server and promptly got killed 10 times in about three minutes. After another couple of hours with bots I tried again. The team I was on was getting absolutely steamrolled for about 4 rounds straight. All the while everyone was screaming medic but despite their great need noone took it upon themselves to help the team. I thought "well I am a complete noob and I'm not helping as a damage role, maybe I should try medic!" I did, we promptly won the next round and the quest to become competent began in earnest!

I quickly learned that some people were worth protecting. In my first few hours of the game, I worked out who our best player was and stuck to them like superglue. It made the other players rage a bit but through observing my leader I learned the basics. The first moment of real triumph came when I was walking from spawn to the battle lines. A coward spy had disguised himself as me. He called for medic and as a good doctor I obliged. But wait, something wasn't right! A few jabs with my bonesaw later I had my first kill! How glorious it was!

I now consider myself a competent though still very mediocre player and I'm having a lot of fun, although it does get frustrating at times! I still play medic the most, with more hours of this than most of the other classes combined but now feel confident as a heavy, engineer and demoman as well.

Things I have learned so far about the game:

1. You die a lot.

2. Noone ever wants to go medic but are perfectly happy to spam the "MEDIC" button even when they don't need it.

3. In large games (10+ on each side), a team of coordinated engineers is the most fearsome force I have encountered, particularly on defence. The next best is a Heavy/Medic combo.

4. Soldiers and Demomen are really good. I switched my medigun to a kritzkrieg as soon as I got it and these guys just run rampant with it.

5. Snipers are fucking shit. I hate having them on our team. They have no health, are slow, do basically fuckall damage without a headshot. Too much is happening too quickly for most people to handle. Over 50% of people who join a game halfway through go sniper as well, regardless of situation and what roles we have. Go something useful you dickheads!

6. Scouts make me cry.

7. Spam is good. Never be afraid to shoot for no reason.

8. Rocket jumping accurately is difficult and I still can't do it.

9. Noone ever plays payload race but it is my favourite type of game, followed by KOTH.

10. The Soda Popper and Phylogistinator are absurdly overpowered.

11. Pyros exist purely to ruin your day. Cloaking? I'll set you on fire. Using an uber? I'll push you away with airblast. Trying to kill someone with rockets? I'll reflect them back in your face. I never go spy purely cos of these guys they are too efficient.

12. Clan members always try and play together and destroy the other more inexperienced team. I wonder why, seeing as public servers are practice for them, why they don't try and mix up the teams for more of a challenge?

13. bumatlarge is just as good at tf2 as he is at Mafia.

14. Lots of people have hats. Most hats cost more than the game itself does, so I don't really get why people get them?

15. There is nothing as satisfying as being the person who pushed the cart into the hole on payload. Next best is killing someone who is dominating you, which happens to me a lot

Anyway enough rambling, it's time to go back and club people with my bonesaw. If you're bored of Starcraft, give TF2 a try! If you run into the Knight Who Says Ni, say hello to me! Just if you are on my team don't go a cunting sniper or I will rage at you.

Snipers just take skills to use. The only good tf2 snipers I've seen are pub stars in CS 1.6

I think if you said some of this on r/ tf2 you would get downvoted to oblivion.

I'm not going to run roughshod over what you think of it so far, but suffice to say a lot of people would disagree with you over a couple of points. My advice is to stick at it for a while, and your opinions of some things will slowly change (the Phlog and Popper are actually utter shite once you get to a certain level, etc).

The Soda Popper good? I haven't played in a while, but last time I played pretty much everyone agreed that the normal shotgun is by far the best shotgun on Scout. Only having 2 shots puts you in so many sticky situations. I guess if you have extremely reliable aim and you're really good at getting meatshots it might be good, but if you don't kill your target in 2 hits you're pretty much screwed.

They might have changed it though.

TF2 makes for a good change of pace from starcraft for me. I usually kind of just autopilot around on killing noobs in pubs. The game is definitely the most fun if you play with friends on the same server. The only problem I have is that so many new weapons keep coming out, its hard to get them all in drops and it makes the game a bit more confusing.

TF2 is an awesome game, I still play it regularly. My favourite class is Pyro, once you get the reflecting good and the fire -> axtinguisher combo the class becomes really nice! :D

Also, point 1 is not entirely true. Most people die a lot indeed, but most people don't know when to retreat and such.

I dont know why you hate snipers, they're australian too you know. But I guess it's the class' function to be fucking irritating so I think raging on snipers is a good thing. :D

And yes the Phylogistinator is overpowered, same for the ice knife. I got a friend who got 5 deaths and 40 kills with a dead ringer, ice knife and enforcer.

Here's a couple of tips, based on your write-up.

Do not go kritz on offense, critical hits have no effect on buildings, so taking out sentries will be a pain with kritzkrieg. In defense though, it can be golden.

As a medic, do not stick to one guy. Make sure everybody has full health and then make sure everybody is overhealed, this makes your team happy and builds your uber way faster. For ubering of course, you should look for the most suited player. Also, be careful to not overextend yourself, if you see your partner suiciding, do not follow him, you are of more use alive!

Hats can actually be found and crafted, most people don't buy them. If they are bought, they show up as non-craftable i think and are worth a lot less in trading.

As said before, snipers can be a huge help for your team. Picking of heavies, medics, engineers, sentries, etc. But if there are more than 2 on a team, it becomes annoying, it's true.

And a last thing, standard load-out is in most cases the best one, exceptions for this are the medic (ubersaw is awesome and kritzkrieg in some situations), spy (he has lots of options) and soldier (equalizer is the way to go).

That's about all I can think of for now, good luck out there and have fun!

Oooh I love TF2. I've been playing it for so long, its such a well designed game!

My favorite class is the spy and...sniper!

First the spy because he's just so much fun to use. You can get a special watch (the cloak and dagger) that allows the cloak meter to recharge if you stand/crouch still. So you can advance through a lesser-travelled portion of the map (because you don't want to bump into the enemy accidentally, or any trigger-happy pyros), then decloak in a place where you can catch one of their members off guard. Generally no one looks behind them, so you can just stab multiple people in the back before anyone catches on. And if they do, just cloak and run away...they'll frantically search for where you went and you can enjoy watching them stumble around in confusion . I can take out teams of engineers with a special dagger called "your eternal reward"...which is really quite rewarding and challenging to find just the write way to stab them so no one is alerted until its too late.

Sniper is a class I really want to get good at...and is probably why you see so many. They want to practise, most likely. Because I know that eventually the sniper should be the best member of any team. He can instantly kill every enemy with a full-charged headshot, most with less to no charge...and all from a distance. I do wonder whether its physically possible to headshot enemies no matter how erratically the move...maybe there's a limit to our hand-eye coordination, but I wanted to see how good I could get so I enjoy playing it!

It is true that kritz doesn't kill buildings any better, but it does help kill the engy frantically trying to repair it I will consider using the standard medigun on offense more. Also I heal everyone now, it was just when I was supernoob that I only healed the best player. I agree that one, maybe two snipers can help. My problem is when we have about half the team as sniper, which seems to happen with alarming regularity. Maybe I just play on the wrong servers? I duno Thanks dude!

I don't know about high level of play. I always die to it, especially when I am medic. I use the crossbow thing and they move too fast for me to shoot them

I have all those, I still suck though. Damn pyros always set me on fire I'm pretty slow at switching from knife to sapper as well. Would get better with practice I guess.

Good story I think I would really like TF2, but I have a strange feeling that if I started playing I would get completely sucked in. Have too many games to play the way it is.
I like the way the walls go out. Gives you an open feeling. Firefly's a good design. People don't appreciate the substance of things. Objects in space. People miss out on what's solid.

It does suck you in. I have over 500 hours clocked, which is more than SC2 =/

I just prefer watching Starcraft, by far. Pro TF2 can be fun, but it's not anywhere near pro SC2.

the fact that he already figured out how ridiculous spam is is a good start, that is like 60% of what you need to succeed in pubs

I quite like using the pyro. Such a versatile class. I love that he can be used both long and short range once u equip the flare gun, and the fact that it does crit damage if theyre already on fire! love air blasting shit back at soldiers as well

Do you even get the bronze medallion for being this new to the game?

So cute how you're complaining about pyro. You didn't even experience backburner +75 health pyros.

I main Pyro, and BB Powerjack pyros are crap. Any kind of good player (on Reddit servers, or Brony servers) will eat a BB + Powerjack pyro for breakfast.

No. The scariest pyros are the good ones using the degreaser.

My biggest pet peeve was having to kill dead ringer spies. Even if ur a pyro you gotta chase the fucker around while he's got the invul up for a good bit. Since I play mostly payload/payload race I can definitely agree with how useless snipers can be, I'd much rather have classes who can contribute to the push and spam on offense. I tried to give the class a shot but either through ping or client side issues I found the registry to be so odd that I just didn't want to deal with it.
