So In advance I feel like this could've gone in sc2general but I put it in blogs just in case since blogs is the most forgiving on misplacement I feel.

So anyhow I have a question for you all. As a diamond Protoss player I realize that most of what is keeping me out of masters league is mechanics. Proper macro, micro, map awareness, and not getting supply blocked. I am working and I think getting better with each of these things but I think my worst is map awareness. This mainly comes from the fact that I have trouble watching the mini map. There will be times that things flash by on the mini map and will go unnoticed because I was too busy throwing down gateways and in turn I am unprepared for the attack that may be coming. I lose to Terran 2 base MMM pushes like that alot because I am not prepared and don't get my force fields down.

So fOr those of you who don't share my problem, how did you do it? How did you train yourself to watch the mini map and see what slips by lower leveled players like myself. Thanks for your help and sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I'm low diamond zerg, so probably not better than you are, but I felt that my map awareness got better (still sucks though) after I started being more active on the map. That is, when I rather than sitting in my base macroing started running speedlings all over, sending in overlords to scout, placing out lings at expos etc. I guess a toss doesnt have as much business to take care of like that, but you can try to have a probe or two that you move around and place pylons, and warp in zealots at expos etc. Maybe warp prisms as well. So in sort: give yourself a reason to look at the minimap, and you will train your muscle memory to look at it more often.

I haven't played the multitask trainer, but if it forces you to look at the minimap, it probably is good training as well.

And, no, this is probably not worthy of a thread in sc2 general. Actually I could argue that it is material for short question, short answers thread. maybe with a [H] or [D] tag, it could have been an interesting sc2strategy thread, but then you would have had to do some research first, like checking up different methods, try them out and then discuss them a bit.

Its all part of a cycle you need to get yourself into. Day9 talks about it like for example "Make worker then look at mini-map, make marine look at mini map, scan/drop mule look at mini map...etc..." oddly enough the tiny little map is more important than the entire screen in SC.
Plays against every MU with nexus first.

For me, it's all about learning to dissociate between what is on the screen, what my hands are doing, and where my eyes are. Most of the time, what is actually going on on the screen is irrelevant, and where your eyes want to be is on the minimap. Try playing a game where you literally stare at the mini-map more than at the main screen.

Of course, the mini-map is only good if you have good map-presence. Otherwise, it doesn't serve much purpose

It just happened. One day while playing online, I just noticed that I saw drops on the minimap when they were happening.

I played a broadwar multitasker sometime when I learned it too.

Honestly it seems to just be a product of playing more and playing faster. As your mechanics in general improve one tends to develop a sort of twitch, as in looking around the screen in a twitch-like fashion, and you'll begin to catch things on the mini-map that you didn't previously.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Hidden Motives. One day I just realised I was actually checking the minimap regularly.
<@Wikt> so you are one of those nega-fans <@Wikt> that hates the company that makes a game and everything they stand for <@Wikt> but still plays the game <@Wikt> (like roughly 30% of blizzard's player base, maybe much more...)

Honestly, as silly as this is, I train myself while I drive around

Left sideview is the minimap, rearview is my money/supply

Two things that can help.
Get a minimap program (I remeber a program that would make a sound every 15 seconds to remind you to look at the minimap)
Remeber to look at the minimap during stressful moments, like in the middle of a large engagement, while your getting dropped, etc
Stop browsing and do whatever it is you're supposed to do. TL will still be here when you get back
