I highly recommend doing assignments right as you get them. It feels SO much better doing it knowing you have all the time in the world. i consistently have better results when I do them well in advance in comparison to the day before. I'm also much happier when I do this.

Good luck with the rest of college, I hope stuff works out.

It means you have a certain period of time to fix your GPA or you'll be eligible to be dismissed from college. Though it sounds like you assumed that based on your post. At least you're accepting fault - that means it probably won't happen again! Get those grades back up, good luck! ^^

I need to maintain B+ throughout my masters or I get kicked out. Cheers 8)

It's not uncommon for 1st year university students to do poorly their first term. The reason is because you suddenly have no one to hold you accountable for your actions. Play games all day every day? Professors don't care and your parents aren't around to scold you. Even if you have all the capabilities to achieve perfect grades, the difference in environment makes it too easy to slack off. To try to spin this in a positive light, being right on the border means it's easier to pull your average back up, and now you understand the severity of the situation you are in. At least you aren't rebelling, thinking it'll be okay next quarter and you can do the same stuff. You need someone to help you make sure you aren't slacking. Ask your mom to help you by calling you once a week and making sure you're keeping up with your studies. Friends work too. As for studying...read my guide to studying (shameless self-plug).

Pretty much my story. Enrolling myself in one of the most competitive programs on a highly-ranked university was not a smart idea It sucks that no matter what class, failing rate is still 10% for chem/ochem classes. People in my program have avg of 70-80 through first 2 years, which is pretty good considering program, but they fail people anyway -_-

I don't mean to be a butthole, but most of the time freshman year is pretty easy compared to the rest of college, sometimes people take some time to adjust to the different lifestyle though. Anyway I agree with TBone, kill everything as soon as you get it really is the best way to do well and also have lots of free time for games (or whatever else).

Well a good first step would be not wasting time on internet forums...

Your attitude is good. I would worry, since the college is threatening you - but I wouldn't worry TOO much - they're giving you a chance to correct the error, and further, they want your tuition!
I've been on absence probation off and on throughout my college career. A good attitude like yours combined with some decent classroom work and essays can go miles. Try talking to your teachers - a good review from them will really help when or if the administration calls you in to discuss your grades: "how are you doing in your classes" they'll ask - well, the tutor says "x". If the teacher has a poor review, well, at least you know what to work on.

This is worded harshly because it needs to be. Stop messing around on internet forums and get your academic act together. University is fun and all, but if you can't handle the extra distractions you have to work even harder than ever before in order to be able to get through it. If this is impossible for you to correct you might have to prepare to engage the idea that you might just be throwing money down the drain and go do something else.

You need to work harder, seriously 62%? You are not even trying with that as a mark.

It's not your fault man, i mean on top of all the SC2 going on they released Skyrim also this year

Happens to most Freshman. Don't beat yourself up too much, but do beat yourself up. Its a wake-up call and hopefully you wake-up. Most people realize they fucked up (and you seem to have as well), but its what you doing next quarter/semester that really matters. Get back on the right track. Best of luck.

WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA!!!! 62% average is the floor for PROBATION?!?!?!
WHAT THE FUCK?!?!!?
Man i know so many people that scrape passes and even fail multiple units who still aren't on probation. Fuck Australia is awesome. Hell even i'm only on a 66% average and my GPA is ~5.28/7.

Probation in Australia is failing 50% of the subjects. And probation amount in Australia is probably higher than other countries. Our marking system is really wtf, but at the end, quite rewarding when you see that HD.

Actually HD for UWA is 80%+, also the A+ is usually 90%+ in Canada and US. Probably should have replaced Australia with University of Western Australia. Though i can't comment on the assessments and the content, i highly doubt it would deviate that much from Australia.

The scaling isn't the same in Australia compared to US/Canada.

Dude, you are who you are.
dont be the guy who posts on a forum and loses all impetus because of it.
People who arnt talking about what they are doing are the ones who are doing it.
I dropped out of uni btw, its not all bad for me ... i got 2 years headstart on my friends commercially. They are all fighting over a few very academic jobs wheras I worked for companies so have a larger job pool. I am jealous of them as they get to do fun things with AI wheras i get to make LOB applications and have to satisfy myself with architectural problems. But then i did end up working for really dodgy telesales companies and had to keep a scaffolding bar by my desk for protection. You make your own bed.
I donty get this you must exceed 66% bollocks ... surley the marking scale should be shifted... because now all the top students only have 34% of the percentile range to be distributed in. Less because i bet 90 is exceptional and rarely given ... so now all students are crammed into a 25% range.
Make anything below say 30-40 a fail and mark harsher then the good students can really begin to differentiate themselves.
The uni has clearly scored less than 66% in their marking scheme.

While your situation is definitely a problem, this kind of attitude is really impressive and exactly the sort of thing which will hope you improve and succeed in the future. You have accepted responsibility for your actions and believe in your ability to influence your own life through smart decisions and actions. So while you may have slacked off until now, this attitude shows maturity and responsibility, and if you can follow through with that resolution, you will have no problem turning things around. Good luck!

I had an adjustment period in my freshman year of undergrad. I went from mid 90's avg in highschool without ever doing anything, to having an average around 60 with 5 100 level courses.
In general grades will go up as you go along. But university is definitely more work than high school was.
I remember covering everything from high school calculus in about 15 minutes in my first calc 101.
Oh god..... dy

Here's the good part: probation is a warning to get your act together, so there's a little time to actually get your act together.
Here's the bad part: If you don't get your act together you're going to get kicked out of school.
I've been through all of this. I went to a very demanding college (the same science and engineering school where Day[9] and qxc have gone) and failed some classes, got more bad grades, and eventually was asked to leave.
After a year, I was able to get back in and finish with a decent record. HOWEVER -- oh my god, if I had it all to do over again I would have gotten back on task after the first sign of problems.
Take a step back and look at how you're spending your time. Your first goal should be to get enough sleep. Second should be to attend every class. Third should be getting your assignments done. These things are all interconnected, and if you don't do 1 and 2, 3 isn't even possible.
You are in a very privileged position to have the chance to attend school on mom and dad's dime. Make it work. You may not have as many second chances as I did.

The only probation I got put on was Alcohol Probation.
My parents thought it was pretty funny.
|
In my first year of college I dropped from a 3.75 in the first semester to a 1.73 in the second and, this, put on probation. Buy I'm still going. My advice, never forget the feeling of getting bad grades and use that to motivate you.

Sadly it does deviated that much from Australia. The reason is the definition of HD is under 5% of ranking (using the bell graph, that's the system in UNSW and Usyd, I do not know about UWA). Let's say there are 100 people in the course. If you got 90 RAW mark but there were 5 people who got 95, you will get 84 at best, but most likely around 80 marks. This is much worse for Macquarie University, as their scaling system is much more severe. Perhaps I was generalising for NSW and Vic universities, although that's what people consider "Australian Universities".

I don't mean to pour any more salt on the wound, but this is going to haunt you for some time to come. Even if you get straight A's from now on, you probably won't even be able to get a 3.9.
It is good that you're taking responsibility though.
|
First year is generally the easier year, I found it fairly straightforward and got around 80-90 in all courses except math (fuck proofs). This was with me dicking around half the time on SC2 and other games. I think 2nd year is when shit gets real for most programs. Shape up, focus, and you'll definitely do fine, just don't relapse into laziness. Good luck!
|
Just remember that you're going to spend the same amount of raw time on assignments whether you start them now or later (assuming you don't dick around while you're doing them), so you might as well finish them when you get them so you feel less stressed the day before they're due. It'll also get a load off your back so you can play SC as much as you want without thinking about schoolwork. My mom always used to tell me back before college that when you play, you want to play 100%, and when you do work, you want to work 100%. None of that waffling around in the middle -- it's seriously not fun -- so finish assignments ASAP so you can play 100% later when everyone else is stressing about shit.
Good luck, try harder. I hope you're retaking some of those classes.

First two years of college I failed it, didn't care, just got grades good enough to pass and stay on my parents payroll. I also had a wake up call (been lying about grades and almost got caught). After I realized that I want to try, and it will do nothing but help, I have had a 3.8 and everything and its ALOT of work, but it feels good man. After you get that first semester of good grades you will understand. Just give it one term and you will feel alot better.
