Today I am looking at caster couches. Dreamhack winter added caster couches to their set this year and garnered ravenous praise from both the audience and casters alike. Caster couches are something we will most likely see much more of in 2012.
In this episode I look at what to take what is currently a 'functional' set piece and make it a 'purposeful' set piece. A functional set is just that, it’s functional; it does the thing it was intended to do. A purposeful set maintains its functionality as well as increases the overall production value.
As a general whole I think that live events have done an awesome job of producing the ‘macro’; the live audience arena. What I would like to start seeing is productions zooming in to the ‘micro’ and start designing their individual shots. People build sets as a whole. Only once a set is built are the camera angles chosen. I think that camera angles choices come before the set that way you can design the set for both the live audience and the live viewer.
In this video I look at several simple things that every event can do to make caster couches more purposeful. I love the functionality of the couch, now let’s make it purposeful.
I discuss how to go from this - which is a very functional design.
to this - which is a very purposeful design.
