Its all uphill from here, I think?
Why is Dota 2 an ESPORT?
A few people have asked me this, not really about dota 2, but about moba games in general. Why would they be considered Esports when maybe sometimes they don't have the greatest graphics (dota 1) or sometimes when there is a big engagement and you don't really know what is going on from all the flashes on the screen.
I always respond. Anything can be an esport, its up to the community and the fans to make a Game into a ESPORT.
Lets say that doesn't suffice as a answer to many. I always answer that dota2 has something many games don't, that moment as a spectator where you hold your breath right before a big engagement where the entire match could be decided.
Times like this is why I love dota.
I guess as players and spectators, we know what its like to be in that sort of position. How it feels to escape a close call, or almost escape just to die quickly and without mercy.
We have a sense of this and in these matches we feel that tensity and that emotion in every game. We have our favorite players who we have seen go from just a small fish in a big pond into a big fish in a small pond. We have seen players rise through the ranks only to face the most powerful team in the finals and win. Earning themselves not only a boatload of cash, but fame and glory.
either you are happy someone died or sad someone died. Up to you!
Something that has always attracted me to moba games in general the the aspect of team-play. I enjoy playing as a group and being able to coordinate attacks and plans for a match. I enjoy the feeling I get when our team has pulled off some very close, very intense victory.
It gives me a sigh of relief and stories to tell when you are talking to other like minded nerds. Talking about that triple kill you got, or that epic death that you had. It gives you stories to tell and stories to live.
Teamwork is magic, or just death. Yes, just death.
The game has something to it. Where you can sit down and watch two teams go at it. Each team having planned its own strategy and its own way of going at this match. While having to think on the fly because you have no clue what the opposing side is going to do.
Dota2 is seeing 5 players working their butts off to get there and winning 1 million dollars. Its seeing people living their dreams. Its having fun and being a part of a huge community that spans the globe.
Yeah its kinda awesome.
Don't worry, I didn't forget about you.
When talking about starcraft. We experience the same feelings, though in a much more concentrated level. Each engagement and each build is a experience. Each and every tiny thing will change the game.
We know (to a small degree) the intensity of each match. We know what happens when your marines get to close to siege tanks (nothing pretty I assure you, do not try at home). We know what its like to have the game won, only to lose it moments later in a big late game battle.
We know what the intensity is all about. Just like dota 2 fans see the intensity in a engagement.
Anyways, I was going to write more, but there are plenty of Dota2 streams online and I want to watch people have fun.
I must live off streams and casts until I get a key of my very own.
Until then. GL and HF
EDIT: ouch for the low reviews
