...So far

You guys are fucking awesome!

You came to us out of your own curiosity and to watch the awesomeness that is BW!

Its truly amazing how many new faces I've seen so far in the BW forums during the games watching and commenting on the LR threads(which I miss taking part in due to classes T_T) and god knows how many just lurking there while watching the streams not knowing whats going on until hours later Sayle brings back the days awesomeness in English for all the new fans(and the old ones because Sayle is awesome ♥).

so please you guys, share your experience, how has it been so far.

What did you like? What didn't you like?Have you watched Vods of the previous seasons?

so many questions, I guess I'm really excited that I don't feel like newbie on the forums anymore :p.

BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR SO DAMN FUNNN!!!!!!

BW4EVER!!!!!!!!

Good shit, a lot like the resurgence in BW after Sc2 first got announced, though I think that was a lot of people coming back. A lot more new people this time, though they won't get to experience WL and MSL

I think after the whole SC BW dying discussions happened, a lot of people wanted to watch since there has been a LOT of BW talk leaking into SC2 discussions lately. It's great, and you can see that the scene is still incredibly big in Korea. Idk why, but there also seems to be even more people in Korea or at least more passion in these first few games. I'm not too sure how aware they are of BW's state or if they feel BW will die out soon in the same way a lot of international people seem to predict. But from what I saw, it's gonna be like much longer than a year for that to happen. Comparing SC2 to SC1 Korean scenes it's not even close.

Also, seems like the S class players are showing as dominating performances as ever (except jaedong's hiccups). Also nice to not hear shit about balance every god damn page.

Personally I love the part where they took out the ace match and now KT looses 3-2 back to back
Jokes aside, the best part about the PL is to find "your" team and that special player for yourself and cheer for them(apart from spectating the amazing games as well ofc)

T1 HWAIIIITING!!!!!!!!!!!

I watched through pretty much the majority of last season, but never dared to post in LR's much because I was too much of a nub and had sooo many questions. But if you ask a question you actually get a lot of responses explaining to you what is the deal and no hostile posts like a lot of people think for some reason.
The only thing I don't understand is why there won't be a grand final:<

O SHIT LOL HAHAHA.
Everything makes sense now,I completely misunderstood now that I read it again http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=286214
For some reason I thought the 2 best teams will be declared the winners at the end and there will be no epic showdown to see who's the best.Made no sense that way.

This just made my day.Thank you!

Sayle's restream of PL with english commentary is immensly helpful for sparking my interest in SCBW. Having someone tell you whats going on is waaay easier to follow than to start crawling around liquipedia trying to find the exact pieces of information. Also (and please bear with me here, I know a lot of the oldschool BW followers are really into their korean commentators, which is perfectly okay) it is easier to understand whats happening if you don't have to think, oh god commentators getting excited, wtf am I missing again. To me the korean commentators, as much energy and emotion they bring to the game, are just distracting me from trying to follow the action. And following the action is hard enough if you've, like me, never ever played a single 1v1 of BW in your life.

Everything I know about BW I learned from reading PL/MSL/OSL writeups on TL, and while the information there is really well organized and beginner friendly, it's incredibly hard to really retain all that information from a text. I love watching BW, I sometimes watched it before Sayle's rebroadcast, and loved it back then as well, but seeing the game, having a friendly person tell you whats happening, and actually understanding whats going on makes the whole experience 10 times better. I got into Sc2 through Husky and HD, and now Sayle is able to pull me further into the wonderful world of professional Brood War

What amazes me most about Broodwar is how incredibly mapped out every strategy is and how precise people are able to play and execite such a complicated game. That level of detail is just not there yet in SC2 and that is what makes wachting BW so amazing for me, it's a little bit of a look into the future, while looking at the past at the same time.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you Sayle, as well as every other person investing time to make TL the amazing Brood War Place it is. Each and every single one of you deserve a fucking award. I am sorry for not beeing able to call out people by name, but this well oiled BroodWar machine you?we? teamliquid anyways has going will never die as long as you are here, keeping it awesome!

If any of the above Text has offended you as a BW veteran, I want to humbly apologize. It is not my intention to spark controversy, I just want to express my love for 2 games that are entirely different, but at the same time a little bit similar as well If you're a SC2 person offended by this, man up and appreciate this wonderful game, without which "our" sc2 would not exist.

I watched a couple of matches last season and trying to follow it more closely now. For me BW is just sooo exciting to watch and especially now when i'm starting to understand more of it bit by bit.

Another awesome thing is finding out which team and player to root for. Which playstyles i like, what race etc etc. Havent figured that out completely yet as i've seen to little of it. Always watch Flash games, but on the same note i kinda like rooting a bit for an underdog. So that will take someone before im a fanboy of someone

Team8 fighting though haha

always watched BW*, only started posting because of sc2, there are alot of us out there like me. i can only hope you see that sc2 players just enjoy a good game no matter which platform (BW, SC2) and to stop criticizing sc2, when we also enjoy BW. ^^

I enjoy watch BW and its nice to get some helpful posts or comments in chat. But the only thing I as a SC2 entrant into the whole SC scene want is for people to stop shitting on SC2 and its players in the LR.

Some of the forum vets out there just enjoy being condescending and in general douchebags the few times I have stayed up for the live restreams of PL.

can't wait for OSL to see him cast in full swing again.

Started watching towards the end of last season, really enjoying it so far :D
Familiarising myself with more players (only knew the biggest names before), getting used to the more common strategies etc.

Watching BW for me is like watching SC2 without my glasses on, I can't really tell whats going on, I don't know what units are what but the commentary gets me excited!

Always admired the game from afar but I've been trying to watch it whenever it's on and then catch Sayle's english casts when I get a chance to try to learn more.

mm, in the past, they had the winner of each season play each other in a Grand Final. But this is ok too I guess

I picked a random team to follow all season long, to spice things up (despite being a CJ fan back in ~2008 when I was kind of following the scene).

I got STX

T_T

My favourite series so far was ACE vs KT, some sloppy play but it was awesome to see ACE do so well, really enjoyed Piano's and FBH games ^^

SC2 has awesome live fans but we need Korean fangirls (although at Providence you could hear a fair few girls cheering for HuK )

I've always been around. I just haven't always been so active in the BW LR threads. I would avoid them entirely because they used to be just as bad as the SC2 ones.

It's certainly refreshing from the stupid shit I see posted in the SC2 live reports. -_-

I'm really happy that the BW forums are so fucking clean now. We're like one big happy family.

Yeah I was reading that 2009 thread about Puma join ESTRO, pretty much the same as the SC2 forums nowadays minus the sheer quantity of posters.

But now, easily one of the best forums out there full stop for content, minus the whole SC2 vs BW debate flare ups.

Since I came to TL to follow SC2 a little more then a year ago I have been trying to follow SCBW every now and then. I have been watching some OSL and MSL finals and a bit of proleague as well. I have always found it to be a great game and been impressed by the players. That being said it is not MY game. I dont care much for it, I have no interest in who is winning and I have no real passion for it.

I am trying though, I am trying to learn to understand it and I am trying to spark an interest. I hope to see more streams with english commentary so that I can learn a bit more about it and then maybe at some point start carring about it. It is a great game afterall.

I feel like most of the new SC2 fans watching SCBW are as curious and intriqued as I am but is looking to find a passion for it as well.

I played broodwar many years ago, but I was young and stupid. I also had no idea that there was a competitive side of it. So then I stopped playing BW and moved on to many other games, until sc2 came out and this is when I accidentally discovered TL.

I'm not particularly good at sc2(or BW), and I don't enjoy playing that much, so I started watching streams of (sc2)players and tournaments. I started watching Sayle's stream about a month or two ago and I enjoyed it a lot. When the whole "Broodwar players switching to sc2" topic came up, I wanted to watch some Broodwar VODs and so did I. I really liked it, so when Sayle announced that he's gonna cast Proleague, I got excited.

Meaningless rambling aside, I really like Proleague so far. I have no idea if the games were actually "good" since I don't know BW builds and strats, but I enjoyed them all. I don't really know the players(besides the "big" ones, like Flash,JD,Stork etc) but I don't really mind that much. I will learn them slowly but surely!

TL;DR: BW is awesome, I need more of it

Watch Sayle rebroadcasts if you don't know about them : http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=286288 Next one starts in 2h20 minutes.
As for the LR threads, yeah they are a bit too civil, just wait till Bisu get eliminated in the next OSL, preferably by Shine, those threads are always the best :D

As others have mentioned Sayle's stream is really what helped me get into BW. I'd been playing both SC and BW back when they came quite a bit with friends and at PC cafés but never knew of a competitive scene back then.

When Starcraft 2 was announced I was obviously excited, having very good memories of the first starcraft games, and this was when I first was made aware of the huge korean BW scene. At first it all seemed a bit too confusing. I had no experience watching RTS or even playing them competitively. Instead I started watching SC2 beta casts.

Since SC2 was still in it's infancy, it was a lot easier to approach both as a spectator and as a player. There was even a lot of videos specifically aimed at people without any sort experience watching Starcraft. When the game released I got placed into platinum without any sort of RTS background which of course motivated me to play even more.

Then a few months ago I watched some BW VODs again. Last time I had watched any, it had all seemed confusing as hell, but now I could suddenly sense the depth of the game, appreciate the crisp execution and gasp at the awesome micro. I was hooked.

I have watched 3-4 games from the new season of PL already, and I'm sure I'll keep watching as much as I have time for. Now I just gotta fins myself a favourite team/players. I tried watching the korean broadcast but I must say I much prefer an english rebroadcast. Probably because I don't have the immense knowledge about BW strats I feel more confortable with someone holding my hand through it.

So in a time when people on the forums are screaming about the war between BW and SC2, I feel good saying I watch Brood War because I've played SC2, not in spite of

If (P)Bisu gets eliminated by ANY zerg, watch the LR thread just explode. There are quite a few classic examples of people just going 'fuck BW'. But seriously (Z)hyvaa is a loser =P

I'm also quite enjoying the new format, seeing KT getting reverse killed twice in a row is an absolute joy to watch. Highly amusing too. It'll be interesting to see if they can even make the playoffs at this rate, players need to really step up. If they can make the top 4 maybe they start becoming all clutch like this year's playoffs. Otherwise i'll lol.

Really wanna get in to watching BW (Played it when I was like 9-10) But when is it streamed and where?
I have watched Pro7ect's stream (impressive speed), but I wanna watch it in obs mode like regular tournaments.

Inspired by threads like the recent one about HiyA.
Anyways, PM me if you wanna help. I feel that BW is more of a sport than SC2. (like most of you BW-guys) :D

Edit: Just read about Sayle and his youtube. NVM

I actually really enjoy listening to korean commentators over english commentators, their language is just so much more exciting. Though I generally can't watch it live so I'll just tune into Sayle's commentary later. But if I'm not doing anything in the following morning, I'm sooo staying up to watch it live :D. It's also really nice for a change of pace from sc2. And its really nice that the length isn't actually that long. sc2 tournaments go on for 3 days straight 12 hours a day, this is so much easier to follow than sc2 tournaments. Definitely glad I'm following this tournament!

One thing that I really hate is when the camera cuts to the player's face in the middle of a game. I guess maybe this is common practice or something? so it must not bother that many people, but for me it completely interrupts immersion in the game and drives me nuts. And it's not just that I don't know the players that well-- I would hate it even if it was my favorite player. I like how MLG has a tiny player cam in the bottom so you can watch if you want to without having the game interrupted. (But I like to see after they win of course.)

Other than that it's been pretty good. People always answer a question I have in stream chat. Some games are boring and some are exciting. I dunno the builds and such but I can follow along with my understanding from SC2, in terms of generally when someone's ahead and when someone is behind. It's really good they put up the overlay with resources and supply count cause that helps me a lot. XD Mostly I watch that and the minimap to figure out how the game is going. I am not familiar enough with units to tell just from watching the main screen.

Oftentimes the camera cuts to the players' face when they are in trouble (somebody called it the doom zoom, was it bibbit?) and it's quite funny when their distress shows through their facial expressions. For example,

At 6:32, ggaemo loses a muta-scourge-ling battle decisively and the camera zooms to show his dismay.

Other times, they show the winner if he is grinning or doing something funny while the game is being tied up and there's really not much to watch but their buildings getting destroyed. Example: [image loading]
(Source: prototype.'s LR thread)

It's good to look at the resource counters and minimap, but there's a lot more tactics and positioning involved on the battle field than the classic SC2-deathball-clash that more often than not just watching the battles itself is good. I'm glad you enjoy it

This is something that I actually really liked because you can see the player's reactions at specific points in the game

Well, all I have seen of it so far has been staring at the screen. No funny faces. I guess those examples are a good deal better. (I immediately equated it to Day9 dailies where he cuts to a troll face in the middle of the game and just looks at you a moment before going back.)

Also I do watch the actual game most of the time, I mean I just have to look at the minimap and supply/resources to figure out who is winning, because I can't tell in terms of tech/army composition.

Proleague has been awesome so far! Now that the number of games have been reduced, I can actually watch every single game.

Having someone like Sayle tell you what's going on is immensely helpful. I know when I first got into BW seriously back in the beginning of the 09-10 Proleague season, the casters helped me get into the scene a lot.

I am talking about, of course, the Korean casters. Being Korean is hax

The thing is in BW, food counts between races are not equivalent, nor are resource counts. You can't really determine from that who is winning, and it can be down right misleading.

For example, in PvT it is the normal for Protoss to have a higher food count than Terran, and they'll hit 200/200 faster, causing a massive amount of money to be banked for a short time. However, because Terran have more efficient units, Protoss food tends to drop more and thus the amount of money they banked becomes important. Thus, before the fight, you can't really just say who's winning from food/supply count.

In general though(this is over generalizing, but good enough for here), Z should be up a base on T/P for it to be even, and P should be up a base on T for it to be even.
T generally has more supply than Z.
P generally has more supply than T or Z

They do however, show the resource counter/food counter on occasion.

I'm not completely new to bw, I started waching earlier this year. Bw made me find nanashin's stream which i <3.

I remember watching JvF first, I think it was the OSL Fanta won when they were in groups and I fell in love.

I watched KT win last year and loved Flash for carrying his team, I felt anxious before Jangbi won.

As a Kt fan its saddening to see them not doninating,

But watching all of KT/Team8, and Ace/CJ as well as some of t8/skt and kt/ace made me feel ckxbsjkskr

When horang2

The time lets me Watch right before GSL too, so its perfect.

Hell yeah! This can't be said enough, NuketheStars has been putting out quality BW commentaries for a long time. You should definitely check out the last OSL finals, it's widely regarded as being the most exciting finals in a long time.

Watched tail end of PL last year and final rounds of OSL. The games were great, the players talented (and handsome), the LR thread sane and safe, the crowds emotional and infectious.

What more could you wish for?

Also, FPL really adds to the entertainment value of watching PL. Despite being way down there with R1CH and Mani.

Sayle is the best commentator we've had since Tasteless (I still love you Nuke). I've been around for a couple years so I don't have a problem watching with korean commentary, but he still points out a lot of things going on in the game that I wouldn't have thought about myself watching without english commentary. So, it's not only beginner friendly

Plus, watching Sayle's rebroadcast rather than screwing up my sleep to watch live is awesome. It won't do for Khan matches or Stork/Jangbi OSL matches though! wouldn't miss those live for the world.

I am not familiar enough with units to tell just from watching the main screen.

the facial reactions is something we all come to love:

thread source

for instance, what happens when two great reaction faces face-off in one of the greatest base trades in bw history? As seen in the battle report here. ggaemo is pictured above in this thread losing hydras to mines, and yeongjae is in the picture in spoiler above. I highly recommend this; it'll be just 4 minutes of your time. One of hilarious base races ever (made in part by korean commentators). The whole game is good too, but this is the excitement.

video timestamped to 16m52s. Basically, the zerg in loading up a major drop to go into the terran main, and terran goes to counter attack the zerg. Earlier in the game they already had a mini-base race, with zerg taking out a lot of the terran's main (you can see the damaged buildings) and terran killing zerg's natural. Neither one was able to kill the other, so they decided to go for base race take 2.

vocab you may need to know if you don't: vessel: science vessel; like the raven for sc2 fans
scourge: suicidal air units; 2 kill a vessel. banelings of the sky
lurker: burrowing zerg units. imba as fuck on top of a ramp :p

obviously, the yeongjae face is from this game

EDIT: also wanted to edit this in; the doom zoom faces are often funny/amusing, but they also show a lot of emotion of the game. I didn't bother looking for the korean vod of this, but the first minute of this is firebathero (now on ace) about to lose the final match in grand finals of the playoffs for his team. He cries on the keyboard before he gg's.

obviously sc:bw and sc2 show the camera reactions right after the game finishes with the gg, but sometimes you miss some emotion of in-game faces that the doom-zoom shots really capture. Which is why player booth shots are good, but sometimes it helps to see a full-screen. I understand not everyone wants it though.

This is something that I actually really liked because you can see the player's reactions at specific points in the game

Yes, it adds a bit of flavor/personality and they've been doing this ever since I can remember. For me it's their way of developing character and they usually do it during important moments of the game.
