So I was watching GSL VOD for Ro 16 Group A. I was disappointed with how that series turned out, but what I was really disappointed and shocked at was the conversation between our favorite casting archon regarding the practice of mixing tea and whiskey.
It was said by Tasteless that this is the way its done in China, and yes in large portion of the country you will find in clubs that there will be people mixing Ice tea with Whiskey. But reason for that is that in large portion of China the whiskey served to you in Chivas or Johnny Walker bottle is FAKE. As in what is basically colored and artificially flavored moonshine quality alcohol packaged either reproduced bottle , or in some case when they want some semblance of authenticity recycled bottle from the actual manufacturer.
These "whiskey" will give you terrible hangovers and also to anyone with any familiarity with real whiskey, it taste like crap. So in order to disguise the way it taste, these clubs will mix it with large dose of flavored ice tea
A secondary reason for the ice tea is in these places the mixer for the alcohol, tea in this case, actually will cost more than the alcohol. A bottle of fake whiskey will set you back maybe 400 to a 1000 rmb depending on the "brand" But a pitcher of ice tea, which is tap water and tea powder will set you back 40-100 rmb. you get one or two pitcher for free with each purchase of a bottle of whiskey but have to pay for each additional pitcher. Say you mix quarter bottle with one pitcher of tea, that means you have to buy 2 more pitcher, which is about 99% profit for the club.
And no this is not THE WAY people drink in China, there are plenty of sophisticated people here who knows the difference between good whiskey and bad and that knows the proper way to appreciate a good scotch is straight up maybe with a drop or two of water. And if you just want to cheap simple drink there is always my favorite standby. Jack Daniel and Coke.
I am an US expat that have been living in China for the past 7 years. This is one of my biggest pet peeve about China, either people are wasting good whiskey with cheap ice tea, or how clubs are getting away serving you fake whiskey with premium pricing.

I don't understand your argument on hangover/no hangover. If you drink enough of even the good stuff you can get hung over too.
P.S. If you like Jack and Coke, grab some Jack Daniels Honey and squeeze 2 limes and 2 lemons into a 5 to 7-shot size glass. You won't be disappointed. =]

He's not really making an argument he is just giving us some information from his experiences that probably most of don't have which I think is pretty cool. He is right about cheap alcohol giving you a hangover. Especially moonshine.. oh god keep it away. I go for quality over quantity.
What made you move to China?

Fernet Branca + Coca cola > anything.
|
Someone from Argentina would say that. But I agree, fernet anything is > anything.

Hahaha, great piece of information!
I had a couple of friends over and I let them try Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve. For those that haven't seen it before (it seems to be only available in Asia), I don't think it's as good as Gold Label (18 years) and I tend to think it tastes like a refined Black Label. However, it's cheaper than Gold Label (18 years) and it tastes pretty good.
Anyways, the guy couldn't hold his liquor, since he was such a wuss and he found it too strong and couldn't even drink it on the rocks. I felt sorry for him and told him to mix it with coke, lol! He may as well has drunk Red Label. The girl fared better, at least she could drink it on the rocks.
But as a real man, obviously, I drank it neat.

I thought you were talking about Nestea drinking the night before his Ro16 Group.

At the start of this thread I thought it would be a, "Children are watching!" thing. Glad to be disappointed.
I've never gone further than the college staples, Jack, Jimmy, and Turkey.

tea + whiskey is good man. it tastes great
|
what are you complaining about? they said whiskey and tea is good, it is so the point of this thread is...
|
Also, now we know why he's called Tasteless!

I'm a bit of a Johnnie fan myself, I've had red, black, green, gold and blue but haven't come across this "gold label reserve you mention" oddly enough i did not enjoy gold label at all =P (only had it once and it was a bad experience) and like black label the best. I also had a friend who couldn't handle gold and mixed it with OJ LOL.

Probably not your intention, but this prompted me to pour myself a drink and fire up the GSL.

I've always been curious about mixing tea with whiskey. I'm gonna give it a try sometime.
Also, anyone else think this had something to do with Nestea being hungover and going 0-2 in GSL? lol

Yeah, impurities from the distilling process exacerbate hangover symptoms. And the fake alcohol have lots of impurities.
I am in China because I am in a small business here.

The hilarious part is that Tasteless was talking about nestea + whiskey and it turns out Nestea was hungover lol
I bet the next time Artosis casts Nestea, he'll talk about the only way Nestea can defeat himself is to drink nestea + whiskey (he's so good only he can defeat himself).
