I love Unreal Tournament. I really do and I always will ...

But the active Unreal Tournament community is so small. If you want to find a game it can take hours sometimes. And that is something that really bumps me up. I mean, I got restricted time and I want to spend it playing and not waiting for an opponent and then maybe have one or two games within two hours. This is really frustrating.

The alternative to that would be to leave Unreal Tournament for good, but I got my clanmates and some of my friends there and they keep me around. I don't want to quit, but I don't want to waste my time waiting for half a dozen games per night. That's a waste of my time, to be honest.

What do you do when you love a game so much you want to keep on playing forever, but it won't work that easy?

that's a really tough situation, on one hand you might want to quit but by quitting you know you will hurt the community and help it die or die faster

I say keep playing it, can't you afk and do other things while you wait?

There is only one solution to that kind of problem. Help promote the community. You love the game? Then start getting players, write a massive blog about why you love it, talk about it to your friends, go to whatever websites discuss the game and rally activity.

Good games die when people let them die, not a moment before. As long as you have passion for something, actively fight for it.

I apologize if this comes across as tasteless but if leaving hurts the community significantly, wouldn't that mean the community is already nearly gone?

I would.. try to organize nights with your clan mates. Good luck. It's hard to give up on things and it's even harder for me to kick sand in your face. I hope it gets better.

This is pretty much how i felt when L4D died. Some of my best moments ever in gaming came from really close games with 3 bros vesus another high level team.
It got to the point where you either played with people who had just bought the game because it was cheap as hell and didnt know wtf a hunter was, much less how to block one when it really counted, or with elitist kids who said "UMAD?" or similar in chat the whole time. Pretty much the worst community ive come across.
I still pick it up for a game every now and then, but every time i do i get reminded why i gave it up.
Sad though, in its prime it was an amazing game. Unfortunately sometimes its better to just find something new than to press on with a game thats not fun anymore.

I went through this once before, way back when Rakion was around. I used to love 1v1 and it was plagued by pay for power, but I still loved it. And I even fared well against some competitive players such as LadyTribes and YZK. And I didn't have any "power items"(items you buy with real money) and I still faired well against them. But all the good players left, and barely anyone plays anymore . It sucks, but you either try and promote community and share it, let it go, or continue onwards on this path sad path of waiting for games .

heh i still play MOHAA and COD:UO and I feel your pain but be optimistic get a few friends and just introduce them to the game play with them and maybe they will show others and so on and so on its what i did with COD:UO and when all my friends are on thats what were playing we still use TeamSpeak 2 to chat and old All Seeing Eye to find games. dont give up!

clanbase still organises cups quite often for ut99 & 2k4. you can participate there with your team. for ictf & itdm there are still like 20-30 teams signing up on a regular basis. sadly it's not like a couple of years ago where there were like nearly 80 signups. dont know for normal weapons though, insta forever

20-30 teams still sounds really good, perhaps low but not yet dangerously low -- and yea good idea Probe1, you guys have to organize and make things efficient, limit waiting times by organizing times to play at instead!

I feel like that applies more to newer games. Sure, you can get your friends into it. I for one, got into SSBM really late and Dota really late, and I enjoyed them greatly with my close group of friends. But when a game has been around for a while its hard to generate excitement for it amongst the community. From my experience, when players start getting bored of a game its hard to get them back.

I empathize with you though OP. I hate the feeling of playing a dying game. It just feels lonely. Even when there are many other players still playing it, if it is in decline it is hard for me to play. I typically switch to another game when one starts fading. It sounds like your problems are more practical though. Having to wait too long for matches? I don't know if there is much you can do to fix that unless you have friends to play with.

Thanks for the support guys.

I have to add some more information, because of some of your comments. My clan JallaHabbibbi!!! and I are always participating in the current ClanBase season. We're one of the last clans to really pick up every mod and we're quite successful. Our team grew big over the last years and we got 27 members total, of which around ten are active. But that doesn't help much, as we all grow older and got more and more obligations in real life. We meet a few times per week and we got planned games when we got clanwars, but apart from that I can only play with some of my friends (mostly former clanmates and people I know for years) or randoms and public games (which I hate to do).

I promoted the community in 2009 and 2010. I became a cup supervisor at ClanBase and hosted one cup, supervised another three through two season and even did some quick cups (mini format which runs for one week only). Additionally I tried to help with the clanmanagement in one of my former clans (Xecution Unit) and did some shoutcast (i.e. TDM finals 2010). All in all I gave 100%, as far as I had time. And still I have to admit one thing: It is really tiring to promote and work more than for the game than playing it. The benefits were there, but after about half a year I started to loose focus. People often don't appreciate your work the way you want it to.

i was sad when i left q2. still regret it, but all of my friends left the game so it just wasn't as fun anymore :/

i played it for like 8-9 years. to this day a painful melancholy comes by every time I remember the good times spent on this game. I hope id software gets their shit together and makes a good fps game me and all my bros can play again together.

What is UT3 like? Should I even bother buying it with a small community? I love the UT series but switched to Quake when things were going downhill.

I fear that this will happen to Dawn of War 2: Retribution. Skyrim, MW3 etc. has hit it quite hard recently. It's an excellent game just badly marketed over the years and it's a very steep learning curve. Oh well, I hope it can stay alive until DoW3 or maybe HotS will fill a gap for a while.

@Torte de Lini UT3 is just different. They gave the game a pretty dark look, a total contrast to the bright UT2004 and the sharp UT99. The sounds are so so and the gameplay is outright horrible in my opinion. If you like shock you will hate UT3, if you like rockes it's better to play UT2004 and flak is horrible. The main problem though is that EPIC failed to catch the communities attention. It's promotion kind of failed and only the Titan Patch was supposed to make a difference. By then the esport community went back to QL or warsow and the diehard fans (like I am) returned either to 2004 or 99. I don't recommend to buy UT3.
