I have been a long time lurker of Team Liquid but I rarely take the time to post. I have always wanted to find a way to contribute more to the community so I figured starting a blog would be a good start.

The topic I have been interested in for a long time is Starcraft and Education. I am currently completing an education degree and I have always believed that video games, specifically Starcraft, deserve a place in the school system. I can think of so many ways that my own body of knowledge was developed through Starcraft. During Brood war I played mostly use map settings games and I was a World War I/II fanatic. Although I was unaware of it at the time, I learned an incredible amount about European geography through those games. I also learned a lot about the events of the world wars. Perhaps even more important is that playing those kinds of games got me interested in learning about the actual historical events. I did research on my own to discover what parts of the game were actually true and just by sparking my imagination, that one UMS game series increased my knowledge of history a thousand fold.

Regardless of how much you can learn playing games that are based on one particular idea, such as history, I am always blown away by how much I learned by accident. When Warcraft 2 first came out my constant lanning with friends reinforced my understanding of left and right (I was a little spatially challenged at that point in my life). I still visualize which hand is my left by picturing a computer screen and remembering my favorite location in a Warcraft 2 multiplayer map.

The potential for Starcraft, and in particular the map editor, for educational purposes is immense. Imagine being able to play out some event from history through a UMS game. Despite the fact that the units would be zealots and zerglings, it is easy to imagine a student being caught up in a well written story being played out through their favourite video game. I know that some would argue there are better games for learning about history, such as Civilization, but the gaming engine and map editor of Starcraft are so well developed that the options are almost limitless. Starcraft could help bring in thousands of students who are dissatisfied with their schooling and get them excited about learning again.

The purpose of my blog is going to be exploring whatever education related Starcraft content I can find. Unfortunately Blizzard's current UMS setting system makes doing so slightly more difficult, but I will not be deterred. If anyone has any ideas or can point me in the right direction I would be grateful. Starcraft and Education is my mission and hopefully I can find some interesting things to talk about.

The University of Florida has it, I know a few other colleges have classes on starcraft.

If you do a word search on starcraft(the equivilant of command f for windows), you'll find information about that class.

Im an education major as well and id love to see SC in schools, but the big hurdle is the violence factor. No way I can show my 6th graders marines getting blown to pieces. Parents would be up my ass in a second.

Id much rather have my students play RTS than the preffered Modern Warfare.

IMO Shooters offer little critical thinking, and promote much more violence than RTS. Ive played RTS since 1st grade and I know for a fact that it has helped me in my studies at school.
Emperor? Boxer disapproves. He's building bunkers at your mom's house even as you're reading this.

I am extremely curious on how you plan to sell this idea to the faculty. Because I'm not exactly sure how Starcraft would work for an actual history lesson as you are implying.

I do agree that games have potential in education though. Examples would be development in social skills and teamwork in MMO's (guilds), problem solving in most action/adventure games, and decision making skills in all games.

I rather like games for teaching decision making. It lets kids actually fail when they make a bad choice. Lets just hope they learn instead of resorting to screaming "Balance!, OP!, I'm better than you!" when they do make those bad choices.

But after thinking about it, games aren't unique in bringing about those skills. You learn all those things through life regardless. It just isn't as fun =D.

I agree. I am not quite sure why but I have never found RTS's to be violent in the same way as an FPS. The violence is so clearly cartoony and fantastical that it is hard to take seriously. Modern FPS's and most newer games have developed their graphics to the point where it actually looks like you are shooting a person. I have done some research on using other games in the classroom, such as Minecraft, and the fact that there is no Teen or Mature rating makes it easier to use them. I hope to find a way to get past the "teen rating" problem. I do think that at the very least most students in high school should be able to play something like Starcraft without setting off a hurricane of rage from parents but you never know.

I will get into this idea as I continue to blog. I attempted to develop some historical scenarios through the editor early in the beta. I found that by playing through a scenario that is based on a historical event there are many opportunities for reinforcement. A good example is in terminology. If I create a custom character based on a zealot and call it a hoplite, even if the exact scenario the students are playing doesn't help them memorize exactly what happened in ancient greece, the reinforcement on the terminology is beneficial. As teachers we always play games in class to help our students learn. I have built lessons around starting a fake business or role playing a scenario such as being an early settler in North America. Using a custom developed UMS game to create a learning scenario seems like a straight forward way to apply Starcraft in the classroom. Granted the class would have to happen in the computer lab that actually has computers decent enough to run Starcraft, but that is a whole different problem.

Does that make sense?

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you guys. I fully believe we can use video games in education.

My research group is currently playing with the ideas of addiction pathways in the brain. We've found that players of video games take in large amounts of information, which they are able to recall with ease. Their 'addiction' to the game places them in states of flow (which I'm sure you've learned about). Wouldn't it be cool if we could induce that sort of state in students?

I focus in primary education myself, and I think SC2 can be more appropriately used for older students. I feel that if games were to be used in education, they need to be built up from an educational origin.
