I'am unsure whether this is the right place to ask my question. If it is not, will the Moderators kindly move the thread to the appropriate sub-forum? Thanks.

Anyways, I want to know if rooting my Android is a good idea or not. I just got my Sensation XE and am thinking of putting in the Cyanogen Mod. The problem is I feel rather scared about rooting my phone. Will it get absolutely destroyed and what can I do to recover it if it crashes or encounters any problem? Furthermore, I'am unsure if the Cyanogen Mod will be able to support my Sensation XE as it only has a mod for the regular Sensation, but, the Sensation XE as far as I know is very similar to the Sensation (same screen size, only a better processor and more RAM I believe.

Can anybody help me with my problem?

To thank you all, here is a link of a man taking care of an orphaned dolphin which is unbelievably adorable.

Rooting your phone won't hurt it at all. Think of it as upgrading your user account permissions from user to administrator in windows. It allows you to do much more, but it doesn't really change how your phone functions.

Ok, but are there any measures I can take when it bricks, like do a hard factory reset (like a jailbroken iPhone) ?

It's definitely worth. Most carrier versions of the roms are garbage, even phone constructors version are.

Procedure to flash the rom really depends on the phone. It was really simple and took me 10 minutes for my SGS2. Took me a few hours for my wife's LG Optimus 2x.

Anyway, just make sure you install some recovery tools in case you need to restore the original rom (this is also very useful if you want to use the guarantee).

Hello Ezra, welcome to Android rooting . Cyanogen rom is a great first place to start. make sure you check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/ , this is where most of the Android guys hang out. Before you root your phone and flash your new rom, MAKE 100% sure that it is supported! While flashing bad roms is not good, they can usually be recovered from if you previously flashed a bootloader and made a backup. Make 10000000000% sure you flash a bootloader that is compatible with your phone as this is where people get screwed. Same with the radio, do NOT flash a radio unless you are 10000% sure it is designed for your phone exactly. Most roms do not require you to upgrade bootloaders or radios but I figured I'd put this in here just to make sure you knew. Anyway head over to XDA, they are way more knowledgeable than I am.

Gingerbread*

Yes, gingerbread is what all the current phones are running. Google names their versions of operating system after pastries, starting with A and ending with Z. The current version is Gingerbread, the next is Ice cream sandwich.

Apologies, looked like a typo. Seems like a pretty quick way of rooting, you could always do it the old fashioned way

One question though. After I root my phone and for some reason I decide that I want to sell it or something. I then do a restore. Will the people at the shop be able to tell that I have rooted it?

No, as long as you also remove the rooting tools after restoration
At the meantime, if you sell it to someone, a rooted phone is more valuable. Lots of people would like a rooted phone but don't know how or scared to do it.

I'm not sure of the way you root for the sensation, but the old fashioned way seems to work the best for me
