UPDATE: Marineking gets second place in Code A finals. Who knows if he will make it out of his up/down matches...
Following upon last night's Code S results, I believe we can now identify a pattern of troubles that appear to set in directly following a second place finish in the Global Starcraft 2 League:
GSL Open Season 1 - 2nd Place Finisher:
Star Tale Rainbow
a.k.a. "Star Tale Hope/Torture" a.k.a. "the only Korean with a losing record in the NASL"
Since coming in 2nd, Rainbow has suffered a slow and steady decline. Most recently he was eliminated from the GSL losing in the first round of Code A. He has lost every televised match he has played in since March 22nd.
While other 2nd place finishers have suffered much swifter and more painful declines, his tribulations can always be viewed as the first inklings of a "2nd place curse."
GSL Open Season 2 - 2nd Place Finisher:
MarineKingPrime
a.k.a. "Foxer (Fake Boxer)" a.k.a. "the Yellow of Starcraft 2"
Oh poor, poor MarkineKing! Almost as famous for his Marine micro as he is for his perennial 2nd place finishes. Not only was he the first to be robbed of a championship by the mighty NesTea, he is one of the worst players in the GSTL with a 1-6 record -- consistently disappointing his teammates on Prime.
No one has tried harder than MarineKing to break the 2nd place curse. Thus far a solution continues to allude him.
GSL Open Season 3 - 2nd Place Finisher:
FnaticRain
a.k.a. "TSL Rain" a.k.a. "Most mediocre player in the GSL"
The curse was already clear by the time Rain made it to the finals only to lose to the Obama-toss oGsMC. Rain has achieved a level of infamy at the GSL that can only be rivaled by IdrA. First, Rain is the only player to end up apologizing to the SC2 community at large for cheesing his way to the GSL finals. Second, he is the only player to ever have been banned from the GSL for not attending the opening ceremonies for GSL July.
Rain, broken under the pressure of the curse, has since joined Fnatic and fled to the United States in hopes of avoiding the curse's reach. It is still too early to judge if his gambit will be successful.
GSL January Code S and GSL World Championship - 2nd Place Finisher:
MarineKingPrime
a.k.a. "Mr. 2nd Place"
No matter how much you fight it MarineKing, the curse only pulls you down deeper! I honestly feel terrible for MarineKing. He is either being eliminated by the best players on earth or losing to scrubs. Since placing 2nd in two more GSL tournaments, MarineKing place last in the group stages of GSL July, lost all of his up/down matches, and was promptly booted down to Code A.
While he is showing promising signs of a comeback in GSL August, could it all just be a cruel cosmic joke ending with him placing 2nd in Code A - only one win away from his ticket back into Code S?
GSL January Code S May - 2nd Place Finisher:
oGsInCa
a.k.a. "Biggest choke in a GSL finals"
InCa may be the saddest sob story on this list. His fall from glory was the fastest and fiercest seen that we have so far witnessed. After only losing one game in the group stage of GSL InCa waged an undefeated path of destruction all the way up to the finals. But oh how quickly such a streak will come to and end when your opponent is IMNesTea. InCa first warning was when his DT opener didn't work in game 1 of the finals. His last three warnings were when his DT opener didn't work in games 2 through 4.
Unfortunately, not only will InCa forever live in shame of his performance against NesTea, he has now distinguished himself as the fastest player to fall from the Code S finals to Code B qualifiers. He lost his group stage in July, lost his up/down matches and was eliminated from the GSL in Ro32 Code A August.
GSL January Code S July - 2nd Place Finisher:
IMLosira
a.k.a. "Has never lost to a beta-build-bunker-rush except for that last one"
Why Losira! Why! You were our best hope at breaking the 2nd place curse. You even got second pick during the group selection process! No one could have predicted these results. LiquidBets had you as the favorite 11 to 1!
But no your just get cheesed out at the group stages. Is this the start of the downfall of one of the greatest Zergs of our time? I certainly hope not! But only time will tell how you do in your up/down matches...
And so GSL participants - past, present and future - let this be a warning to you. If you practice hard enough, develop your skills long enough and are lucky enough to make it to the FINALS of the Global Starcraft 2 League --- YOU BETTER PLAY TO WIN!
Or risk suffering the same fate as the second place finishers that came before you...

On a lighter note, Star Tale Rainbow has been VERY successful in the GF department:
|
MarineKing didn't get 2nd place in the Super Tournament. MMA did. MKP got 2nd in the World Championship.
I don't follow the NA scene too much, but I wouldn't say that Rain's results have been less than promising. He did very well at MLG Anaheim. Other than that - good job ^^
EDIT: You could probably write something about MMA falling down to code b after getting second place in the ST. Although he did qualify for code s a short time afterwards
|
What about July? Didn't he come 2nd too?
|
Well, overall play has improved by miles since the open seasons. Players like Maka, Check, and Rainbow are hardly relevant Korea-wise.

I think the point is that July was not cursed after second place so OP sneakily left him out
|
But MKP did win that Chinese tournament recently, so he's probably doing about the best out of all of them.
|
Um... Getting 4th place at MLG anaheim crushing through the open bracket and MMA and Ret and only falling in one of the most epic TvT's of all time vs. The Emperor himself is a result that you call "less than promising" for rain? Lol
Despite that little thing... This post is very nice... and true TT MKP HWAITINGGGGG

It's creepy that you screenshotted this, saved it in your folder, and remembered that you had it.

I'm pretty sure I've seen some SS like this and similar discussion about Rainbow's GF before...
So all he had to do is remember that 'Rainbow's GF is hot' and find the thread or whatever.

Bit of an overreaction. There is no curse.

It was posted in the tournament thread and there was about a 4 page discussion on her. Not that creepy or surprising since I was there reading the thread at the time
Well I enjoyed reading the blog and it made me have a one person pity party for everyone thats been blown away in the finals. Except Inca. Rain is okay to me cos he apologized but thats pretty old news anyway. Inca however I hate for making it to the finals and then being destroyed.
I would argue that that was the most disappointing finals out of all of GSLs cursed sets.

Nice Writeup dude enjoyed the read

Well obviously. Curses don't exist.
But it's a noticeable trend and I wouldn't really say it's an overreaction. Flavor of the month players have been quite common in SC2 (even without actually reaching the finals / ending 2nd).

Annoyed at your description that Rain's results have been "less than promising." MLG Anaheim completely indicated otherwise...

It's quite possible that he's stuck at second base.

I think runner ups at the superbowl had similar statistics.
|
Everyone wants to make a name for themselves by taking out the best players from previous seasons.

that Kim Gayoung? She was on rainbow's stream once, and the viewers went from like 800 to 2200 after 15 minutes...
