i was inspired to write this after listening to sotg this week. talking about the blizzcon invitational based on ladder inviites. direct quote from the blizzard map changes blog post

Looking at the statistics, we’re seeing that the higher level players rarely play these formats. Therefore, we’ve decided to go with a bit more of a casual-player-friendly selection of formats. We want to provide a good mix of fortress style maps, as well as rush maps, to cater to the broad player base here. Our goal for these two formats is for players to be able to enjoy variety in the gameplay, rather than trying to provide an eSports level of game balance.

emphasis is mine.

with that in mind, why are we using this ladder to invite for an esports tournament ?

to give no names a chance i'd guess. i have no idea if any "no names" have been invited as i haven't really been paying attention to the invite thing

We aren't, they are and that is their decision. Yeah, it is dumb, I agree, but when people put together a tourney they have the right to set the rules as they see fit and players can decide to participate based on those rules.

I think it is kind of annoying myself, but I also see an interesting merit. Some strong ladder players may just never go to tourney and this might inspire them to do so. I don't know, whatever, it is their rules.

maybe my phrasing of 'we' implies too much ownership of their event. but it really feels like blizzard enjoy doing things people hate purely for the reason of keeping the drama flowing. i dont know how to explain this well but i dont see the cross over between the groups who think rush maps are good, and the people who watch competitive events.

Yeah, I totally understand and agree with you to some extent, but I think that Blizzard is just trying something different, giving other people a chance with this one. There is a ton of highest-level content and tourneys, so why not try something different? I just think that people are sometimes too hard on Blizz just for doing things different than what we enjoy the most. I am not trying to say you are wrong, I agree that WE want to watch high-level play, but other people may disagree.

in what other sport would 'give other people a try' and 'pay them 20k dollars (plus blizzcon invites)' be together in the same argument.

if this is the hold your hand event dont give it the big boy prize pool, or run it as a duel pro/am event. there are many ways to encourage the growth of a scene from the bottom up, throwing money at bad players is not one of them. that just encourages people to work less hard, which hurts esports

im not saying any of the players so far are bad as such. but from the EU invites at least it actually appears to be 1 player per team who are also popular. this just implies the ladder isnt what they are using for invites at all (which is what they said they would do), but either way, if the ladder is used my argument is that it creates the possibility of inviting bad players by design.

Yeah, I totally agree that it can and will produce bad players, but it can also have an upside. I think at this point it is an experiment and we will have to wait and see how it will turn out.
