Hey all! Welcome to Kronos’ Starcraft 2 Blog. In this blog post, I will be discussing Zerg vs. Terran tactics, strategies, and build orders. In Zerg vs. Terran, the most common army compositions a Terran player will go for is Marine/Tank/Medivac or Mech, which consists of Thor/Tank/Hellion. I’ll start off with countering Marine/Tank/Medivac.
There are 2 army compositions a Zerg player can do to counter Marine/Tank/Medivac, one being Muta/Ling/Baneling. Mutas are used to harass while you take control of the map and build up a sizeable army. When engaging, Lings should be used to hold the Terran army in place while Banelings suicide into Marines and Tanks. Use Mutas to mop up leftover Tanks and Medivacs. This build is very reliant on gas and upgrades. Once you upgrade to Lair tech, you should drop 2 Evolution Chambers and start upgrading melee attacks and armor upgrades. As Mutas and Banelings cost a lot of gas, it is vital you take an early third, preferably around the 8-9 minute mark. This build is very good at shutting down drops (if you spot them coming) because Mutas can destroy Medivacs before they unload. Be sure to keep a few overlords stationed around your bases, watching for incoming drops.
The next army composition a Zerg player can use to counter Marine/Tank/Medivac is Ling/Infestor. ROOTDestiny has used this for both ZvT and ZvP matchups, both with a great success. Build order as follows:
10/10 Extractor Trick
11/10 Overlord
11/10 Spawning Pool
Drone to 16/18 supply then stop
16/18 Queen
18/18 Hatchery (@ 300 Minerals)
17/18 Drone
18/18 Overlord (and continue droning)
This build allows a very strong early game economy because it gets you a fast queen for faster larvae, while at the same time can be used for early aggression since you get your spawning pool fairly early. 2-3 Spine Crawlers will be needed if you drone up, and if you scout Hellions be sure to drop a Roach warren and get a few Roaches. Grab all 4 of your gasses around 40-50 supply and upgrade to Lair tech. As soon as Lair finishes, get your infestation pit and research Pathogen Glands. At this point, you should have a sizeable army of Lings, but once Pathogen Glands is 75-80% complete, morph as many Infestors as you can. When engaging the Terran army, use Infestors to fungal on the enemy army while your Lings surround and destroy him. Burrow should also be researched for using Infestors to harass with Infested Terrans.
There are 2 weaknesses in this build, 1 being early game aggression. Until you can get Infestors onto the field, you are vulnerable to early attacks. This is why scouting is so important. Use Lings to grab watch towers and to scout his army/base. If he isn’t expanding and is massing up an army, be sure to drop 2-3 more Spine Crawlers and get some more Lings. Another weakness in this build is drops, since your only Anti-air is queens and Infestors Fungal Growth/Infested Terrans. It is wise to keep 1-2 Infestors at each base to shut down enemy drops or at least stall them until your Lings can arrive. As said before, it is vital to keep Overlords stationed around your base to spot incoming drops. This build will also work against Terran Mech, however you will need to mix in Roaches to your army and upgrade Neural Parasite to mind control Thors.
I hope you have found this blog post beneficial, and I hope it will help your game play.
