When I was in school, I was in charge of creating graphics and the overall "look" (as much as is possible given the monetary restrictions) of our weekly newscast. It was a great experience and I feel like my creativity (which has always been a strength of mine) was enhanced a ton afterwards.
So with that being said, I've been trying to figure out the best approach in trying to get a job in esports on the production side of things. I recently started a wordpress blog (though it's been inactive a few days since I was out of town) that focuses on what I like and don't like from a producing standpoint (to this point solely the NASL since the blog's only been started a couple weeks). The hope is that someone from the big leagues will notice it and hire me (hey I can dream!).
I had two interviews in May with IGN and sadly didn't get a job with their esports division (still my dream job, haha). I continue to frequent their job postings in hopes that another opening will come up. I've looked into jobs with some of the North American teams as well as leagues like the IPL, NASL, and MLG. I haven't been able to find much info on MLG as far as where to look for job openings since the redesign of their site. So I've been looking but maybe my approach is wrong.
So with that said, I'm curious if anyone has a suggestion about how to get involved? I'm not someone that needs a lot of money, I'd rather do something I love and have a passion for rather than something I don't enjoy. I would LOVE to move to a place like San Francisco since it seems like the place to be for esports anymore. But I'm not going to move anywhere without a job so that's another problem.
So my questions are:
What's the best way to get involved in esports? I've offered to volunteer in the past for experience purposes but haven't had any luck.
Should I continue writing the blog?
Should I come up with a creative plan and send it to different companies and see what they think of it? I'm worried that if I put the effort and sent something like that out, that the ideas would get used and I wouldn't get hired.
Any suggestions at all?
Additional background: I've been out of school since May 2010 and I haven't found anything in news producing despite applying everywhere under the sun. No one seems to be hiring so I've tried a different angle. So yeah, any suggestions would be extremely helpful. I need a job badly as it is, but getting one that I would love (like one in esports) would be so awesome that pay wouldn't be an issue. Thanks for reading!
